Behind every gift is a story, and usually the story involves life-changing care at Kettering Medical Center. Sometimes it’s a patient’s own story; often it’s the story of a patient being celebrated by a family member or friend. Was your gift motivated by the care you or your loved one received?

With approximately 150 separate funds, the Kettering Medical Center Foundation offers you a way of supporting any KMC institution and program. Also, new funds are established each year to support additional projects in which donors have a special interest.

Following are examples of your accomplishments through the Foundation during 2012.Because you gave… • Kettering Cardiovascular Institute

continued to provide nationally acclaimed cardiac services to Kettering Medical Center patients. Significant outreach and screening events helped many learn of their heart and stroke risks. Heart patients also benefited from new imaging technology provided from Heart to Heart Gala proceeds. A heartfelt thank you to our Heart to Heart Gala sponsors and attendees.

• Hundreds of Dayton-area uninsured and under-served women received free mammography and related diagnostic and prosthetic services through the Kettering Breast Evaluation Centers because of the Foundation’s Women’s Wellness Fund. Thank you for participating in the Walk for Women’s Wellness, Ribbon of Hope events, and for your gifts to the Women’s Wellness Fund. In its 18 years, over 10,000 women have received these essential medical services at a cost of over $1 million – all because of your generosity.

• Cardiac Endowment Fund helped fund the annual Cardiac Colloquium that featured nationally renowned speakers and attracted a record number of physicians and medical students from throughout the region.

• Dayton-area men received free prostate screenings from the proceeds of our annual Golf Tournament. Golfers also provided diabetes management for uninsured patients and supported other patient-centered initiatives. Thank you for golfing with us.

• Sycamore Medical Center patients receiving injections or blood draws now benefit from the latest vein viewing technology, dramatically reducing the need for multiple “sticks.”

• Joint Replacement patients benefit from new rehabilitation training materials – in both printed and digital formats – provided by your unrestricted gifts. Thank you for making this difference.

• Your gifts of compassion brought smiles to the faces and hope to the hearts of cancer patients. And, for scores of patients, your gifts provided gas cards so they could afford to travel to get their life-sustaining treatments.

• Radiation Oncology hosted its second regional cancer symposium as a result of a donor-designated gift. The patients of two hundred physicians will benefit from the latest research on treating breast cancer. Thank you for bringing the latest treatment education to physicians in our region.

• The Benjamin and Marian Schuster Heart Hospital at KMC continued to receive capital support from the Foundation’s donors completing their campaign commitments. Many thanks for your vision, generosity, and faithfulness.

• Kettering Medical Center employees experiencing a severe financial crisis received financial assistance from the Employee Assistance Fund. Thank you, employees, for making a difference in the lives of your colleagues and their families.

• Physicians and residents benefit from the new PolyCom projection equipment in the Dean Amphitheater, provided through the generosity of one of Kettering’s esteemed physicians. Conferences and other advanced educational experiences can now be shared throughout the Kettering Health Network and with other similarly equipped hospitals anywhere in the world.

• Kettering College students received nearly $100,000 in scholarships and student financial aid from donor-established scholarships. Thank you, college donors, for making a difference in the lives of our students.

Your gifts are put to work as soon as practical and prudent, and without any deduction for fundraising or other operating costs. During 2012, your gifts totaling $1,806,178 were used to advance KMC programs and support patients. • Medical Center staff from

Cardiology, Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Labor and Delivery, Orthopedic Rehabilitation, MSICU, SICU, Neurology, and Nursing Education received funding for recertification, conference expenses, and educational materials. Thank you physicians and grateful patients.

• The Counseling Care Fund, started and primarily supported by physicians, provided counseling to scores of people who otherwise could not afford these services. Thank you for showing your compassion in this manner.

• Kettering College faculty received funds for continuing professional education. Thank you for encouraging faculty in their educational pursuits.

• Kettering Behavioral Medicine Center’s adolescent patients were helped by art supplies, therapy games, DVD’s, and other equipment because of your thoughtful giving. Thank you.

• The Medical Library continued to expand its collection as a result of generous giving from physicians and other friends.

• Graduate Medical Education made use of endowment earnings to support a professorship in internal medicine, sponsor a lectureship for resident physicians, and underwrite a post-doctoral fellowship. Thank you to those who years ago had the vision for establishing these endowment accounts.

• A special thanks to those who provided hats, blankets, and children’s books to our patients and their families.

• Various patient support groups, including brain tumor and cancer, benefited from supplies and educational materials provided by donors’ gifts. Thank you to grateful patients and family members for your sensitive giving.

Thank you for partnering with us to improve the quality of life for the people in the communities we serve.

good intentionsMany friends of Kettering have good intentions of including the hospital’s Foundation in their estate plans, but their intentions never get translated into action. You can continue the impact of your generosity by including the Kettering Medical Center Foundation as a beneficiary in your will or trust. Or, if your estate documents are complete, you can add a simple codicil to accomplish your giving goal.

Some prefer to give a specific dollar amount. Others, because they don’t know the final value of their estate after caring for their obligations, prefer to specify a percentage of the residual. And some friends direct their entire estate to the Foundation.

You or your advisor may find the following wording helpful: “I herewith give the sum of _____dollars (or a percentage, or ‘all’ of the residual) to the Kettering

Medical Center Foundation, 3535 Southern Boulevard, Kettering, OH 45429, to be used to support the healthcare programs of Kettering Medical Center and its affiliated programs, as the Foundation’s Board of Directors direct.” You may also designate a specific KMC program you wish your funds to support.

Your advisor may also ask for the following information:

• The Foundation holds a 501(c)(3) IRS status (i.e., tax exempt);

• The Foundation’s EIN number is 23-7419897.

Please share with us that you have included the Foundation in your estate so we can celebrate your generosity by including you in our Legacy Society.

thank you This PULSE issue thanks those whose generosity included the Kettering Medical Center Foundation during 2012.

And as you will see on later pages, many friends gave to advance healthcare, research, and education at Kettering.

Your giving is remarkable. The Dayton region, like most of the country, labors under significant financial uncertainty. Also, changing federal policies create acute anxiety over healthcare finance, an anxiety driven by uncertainty and, to some extent, suspicion. Neither of these factors contributes to generous giving.

And yet, you gave. It is difficult to find words to express our gratitude.

Please read “Your Gifts at Work” earlier in this issue. That article highlights a summary of what you accomplished in patient care, physician graduate education, medical innovation, wellness outreach, and many other areas.

Because of the changes in healthcare finance, your gifts are more important than ever. Hospitals will rely more and more on philanthropy to provide the medical advances needed by patients and their physicians.

Thank you for your continued generosity.

Gratefully,

Martin E. Clark, EdD President

2012 in honor and in memory giftsGiving to the Kettering Medical Center Foundation “in memory of” someone recently deceased can be a significant encouragement to the loved ones. Also, giving “in honor of” a special person or a friend’s special event is likewise

a blessing. “In honor” gifts are often received in recognition of birthdays, anniversaries, outstanding achievements, or special recognitions. The Foundation promptly notifies the person you designate that you have given a gift honoring them

or memorializing their loved one. “In honor” and “in memory” gifts can be made on the Foundation’s secure website, www.kmcfoundation.org. The following were honored or memorialized by gifts during 2012:

the chapel at sycamore medical centerThrough the generosity of Lee and Ted Hieronymus, Sycamore’s chapel underwent a much needed renovation. Its features now provide an attractive, convenient, and comfortable place for meditation, prayer, and quiet reflection.

The chapel entrance includes a dedicatory plaque that reads, “In loving memory, this

chapel is dedicated to Harriet Hieronymus, teacher, historian, and friend to all who knew her in the Miamisburg area, from her sons Lee and Ted Hieronymus.” A dedication service attracted city officials, community leaders, and many family friends.

Lee Hieronymus is a member of the Kettering Medical Center Board of Directors.

foundation honored by ohio senateIn conjunction with receipt of a generous grant from the CareSource Foundation, the Kettering Medical Center Foundation was honored by a citation from the Ohio Senate “for exemplary service” and “a remarkable record of service.”

The citation read, in part: This accomplishment is . . . an outstanding reflection not only on the association itself but

also on its astute management, on its hard-working staff and volunteers, and on the community. Over the years, the Kettering Medical Center Foundation has enhanced the quality of life within the surrounding area, helping innumerable people achieve optimum health. . . . It is through the diligent efforts of groups such

as this that the State of Ohio continues to prosper and remains a pleasant place in which to live and work.

The commendation was signed by Senate President Tom Niehaus and Senator Peggy B. Lehner of the 6th Senatorial District.

kettering college studentsshow gratitude“I have two part-time jobs on top of my course load. I would be the first to say that, as much as you can work, it may not cover all the expenses in life . . . Without these scholarships, many of us would not have the opportunity to follow our passions and continue through school.” These words from Brittany Busch, graduating this year and a recipient of the Scott McNeilly Respiratory Care Scholarship, were echoed throughout the room as scholarship recipients expressed their gratitude to the donors of their scholarships.

Held annually by the Foundation, the evening reception is a high point for scholarship donors and students alike. Donors meet the current year’s recipients of the scholarships they established, and the students meet those whose generosity made a difference – often the deciding difference – in their education.

Kathy Keyes of the Foundation coordinates scholarships and would be happy to hear from you about establishing one in your honor or in memory of your loved one. Please contact Kathy at 937-395-8607 or [email protected].

steve hopf, emeritus directorThe office of Emeritus Director is reserved for directors who have completed all the terms they are eligible to serve and have added significant value to the Foundation during their tenure. It is no wonder, then,

that Steve Hopf was unanimously and enthusiastically elected to Emeritus Director by the Foundation’s Board. During Steve’s twelve years on the Board, including three years as Chair, he brought

distinction to the Foundation by his quiet wisdom, his genuine compassion, and his tireless fundraising. We are very grateful for his continued commitment.

The new PolyCom projection system will make interactive conferences and presentations possible among all Network hospitals and other similarly-equipped institutions. Loma Linda University Hospital in Southern California is a frequent participant, and the

first international interactive conference is scheduled this Spring.

This marvelous new learning experience was made possible by a generous gift from Dr. and Mrs. David Small. Dr. Small, Chief of Staff and a long-time surgeon at Kettering, now a faculty member and mentor in Kettering Medical Center’s Medical Education Department, also served on the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

new foundation directorMichael Suttman, president of McGohan Brabender, was unanimously elected to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Mike, a lifelong resident of the Dayton area, has held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility with McGohan

Brabender since he graduated from Miami University. He is active in the community and continues McGohan Brabender’s long standing relationship with the Foundation.
