Lord Mayor’s Message

It is an exciting time to be in Parramatta.

In April, the NSW Government identified Parramatta as Sydney’s Premier Regional City – citing numerous opportunities for our City to support the growth of the State.

To sustain the projected growth of the region, I have announced a range of exciting projects. A proposed new light rail network will connect Parramatta’s key precincts and strategic surrounding suburbs such as Castle Hill and Macquarie Park. The network will help ease congestion and pressure points well into the future.

Council has also submitted a Development Application to build the Aspire Tower at 160 Church Street. At 90 storeys high, this iconic tower will not only put Parramatta on the map, but also go some way to setting the tone of the Parramatta Square Development.

Our soon to be launched free municipal wi-fi will provide internet services on the streets of the CBD. Our partnership with local internet provider W3 Networks supports Parramatta’s mission as a Smart City, and the service is set to be Australia’s fastest!

There is an exciting future ahead for our City.

Councillor John Chedid Lord Mayor of Parramatta

We sing for Wanderers!

Wanderers fans were out in force as part of Council’s street parade and family fun day in honour of the 2013 Premier’s Plate winners.

After the team’s open-top bus led supporters down Church Street to Prince Alfred Park, the Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid, presented the Wanderers with the Key to the City.

The Wanderers well and truly exceeded all expectations by making it to the Grand Final in their first season of competition. The Wanderers have proven to be true ambassadors for Parramatta and have done our City and the region proud. Do you own a pool? Did you know that new State Government rules came into effect on 29 April 2013?

All pool owners must now register their pool on a new state-wide online register by 29 October 2013 to avoid penalties of $220. Register your pool at www.swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au.

Please also note that a valid swimming pool compliance certificate is now required before selling or leasing a property with a swimming pool.

To find out more visit dlg.nsw.gov.au and select backyard swimming pools.

Council has released a vision for a future light rail network in Western Sydney. The artist’s impressions for a $1.7 billion network were launched at the State of the City Address on 10 May.

Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid said the light rail network would be 24-kilometres long with up to 25

stations along its route. The Castle Hill line will cost about $800 million to construct and the Macquarie Park line about $900 million.

“The first stage would link Parramatta to Macquarie Park via Eastwood and another line connecting Parramatta to Castle Hill. From here, the network would

grow and evolve to meet the future economic and social needs of the region,” Cr Chedid said.

“Most importantly, the first stage would service more than 5000 passengers per corridor during peak hour periods.”Image above: Artist’s impression of the light rail through Church Street.

Council will soon offer free outdoor wi-fi along Church Street, from Riverside Theatres to Westfield, the City’s libraries and parts of Macquarie Street.

Hosted by local internet service provider, W3 Networks, residents and visitors can access free wi-fi for up to 30-minutes each day, at speeds of up to 100Mbps. Beyond the time

limit, users can sign up to W3 for continuous access.

Free wi-fi is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be accessed with any wi-fi enabled device including smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Reflecting Council’s commitment to improving the ambiance of the CBD; residents, workers and visitors will enjoy Parramatta Lanes at the end of the working day.

Council has launched a boxing program and corporate soccer competition as part of the Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid’s Healthy Generations Initiative.

Cr Chedid said: “Council is focused on the health and fitness needs of our workers, which is why we’ve organised a range of activities to fit their busy schedules, usually during the morning and lunchtime period.

“These activities are also great team building excercises, with the added benefit that physical

activity can improve people’s performance at work.”

The boxing session is run in partnership with Rush Hour and the corporate soccer competition, in partnership with Anderson Events.

Council’s CCTV cameras recently helped police successfully identify a local graffiti vandal.

The vandal – who uses the tag ‘SUEK’ – was captured on camera targeting the water fountain in Church Street Mall.

Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid, underlined the importance of working with local police to reduce crime.

“In 2010 I introduced the Safer City Initiative, which saw the installation of CCTV in the Mall. I’m pleased the cameras are helping local police identify serial offenders, and deterring anti-social behaviour,” said Cr Chedid.

The Lord Mayor recently hosted the Deputy Police Commissioner, Nick Kaldas and local business people to discuss crime and anti-social behaviour in Church Street Mall.Image above: Lord Mayor, Cr John Chedid meets with NSW Police, and local businesses to discuss crime in Church St Mall.

Experiment Farm cottage, one of the Australia’s oldest standing properties, is on the site of the nation’s first land grant.

In November 1789, Governor Phillip gave convict James Ruse the 30-acre site as an experiment on how long it would take a man to support himself and his family.

Ruse sold his farm to Surgeon John Harris, for 40 pounds in October 1793. Harris built
