The 2020-2021 academic year was another challenging year as we continued to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. We were all deeply disappointed not to be fully back on-campus and gathering in-person. However, despite the challenges, our students, faculty, research and partnerships continued to grow and thrive. We found ways to ensure our students received the top-notch, hands-on education we are known for. Our faculty and staff got creative to provide virtual experiences for both current and prospective students. Our researchers continued to provide opportunities for students and to nurture relationships with industry partners.

As you will read in this year’s report, students such as Aldo De Leon Resendiz graduated with the skills to go directly into the workforce. Our generous donors stepped up again on both Day of Giving and at the second Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser, and Dr. Hasan Jameel was honored with the 2021 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching.

We do not know what the coming year will look like. But as one of the oldest and most respected paper science and engineering programs in the world, we are one of the most tight-knit communities not only in the College of Natural Resources, but at all of NC State.

This sense of community and our ongoing success would not be possible without the leadership of our board and the involvement of our many alumni, donors, friends and partners. Our partnerships with industry not only make our students more successful, but also ensure that the needs of the industry are being met by our graduates.

Thank you for all that you contribute to our Paper Science and Engineering program through gifts of time, knowledge and dollars. We are truly grateful. It is during these challenging times that we are reminded again and again of the strength of our community – for the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

Go Pack!

REPORT FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD

Greetings on behalf of the executive team and Advisory Board. We are honored to serve in a leadership capacity for this wonderful group of dedicated individuals, serving a powerful industry.

As we embarked upon the 2020-21 academic year, none of us at NC State thought we would spend the entire year in a virtual setting. Nonetheless, as a board and program, we continued to set ambitious plans and goals, no matter what the year would have in store for us. Looking back, we can be proud of our many achievements and efforts. Looking forward, we will always make note of what we can reapply to continue on our path of excellence and improvement.

As you will see throughout this report, our board and volunteers have partnered with our program to continue ongoing efforts and support new ones, such as: • Host two virtual board meetings and welcome three new directors.• Plan and execute an outstanding virtual professional development opportunity for our students and industry alike entitled “Breaking Barriers: The Changing Workforce in Our Industry”.• Utilize a new and unique platform for a networking oriented virtual Gala and class reunions.• Change lives with scholarship funding made possible by our in person, PSE/PGM Golf Tournament, bringing folks together for one of the few times this year.• Further support our students with the Frances Melton, Adrianna Grant Kirkman, Packaging Corporation of America, and Sideris Family endowed scholarships.• Support our rescheduled and annual Day of Giving events and meet our goal to raise more than $10,000 for the Paper Science Success Award, based on demonstrated financial need. • Connect our alumni and students with our new Digital Class Book: Bonded by Paper.

• Continue the important work of our committees in the areas of curriculum advisement, recruiting and scholarships, alumni relations, corporate relations, and advancement.

• Support many virtual recruitment and retention events such as a freshman retreat, senior banquet, Paper Super Scholars, “mill town recruiting presentations” and two summer camps.

The success of the Advisory Board is highly dependent on the involvement of our directors, board members, dedicated alumni and friends, industry partners and our faculty and staff. Thank you for your tremendous efforts and we encourage you to continue advocating on our behalf and helping to recruit new industry partners, committee members, board members and volunteers. Our program and reputation were built on generations of volunteers and advocates before us, whose leadership and vision have guided our goal of a world class, world renowned program.

To all of our board members, industry partners, faculty, staff, alumni and students, thank you for your dedication, time and support.

IMPACT OF GIVINGAdrianna Grant Kirkman ScholarshipThe Adrianna Grant Kirkman Scholarship Endowment will provide merit-based scholarships for undergraduate students pursuing a degree in paper science and engineering who have demonstrated interest in equality, diversity or social justice for women by participating in community activities, social groups, student clubs or organizations. The endowment was established by Kirkman’s siblings – Betty Grant, Ann Winstead and James Grant.

“In establishing this scholarship, we not only want to honor Adrianna’s ability to overcome assumptions about who she was and what she was capable of, but we also want to provide assistance to students who face similar challenges.”

Kirkman, a professor emeritus who retired in 2018, began her career at NC State as a research technician in the Department of Wood and Paper Science (now Forest Biomaterials) after

graduating with a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics in 1970. While working there, Kirkman earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. in wood and paper science. She was later appointed associate professor and then professor while teaching in the Pulp and Paper Technology program. In 2002, Kirkman became the associate dean of academic affairs for the College of Natural Resources.

A trailblazer, Kirkman was a leader in the field of computer simulation and process modeling and one of the first women in the field, becoming a strong advocate for equality and the promotion of women in STEM and the paper industry.

We are grateful for the endowment that Betty, Ann and James have established in Dr. Kirkman’s honor. It is a fitting tribute to her legacy and will help advance women in our program and the industry for years to come.

Packaging Corporation of America ScholarshipTo commemorate and recognize Dr. Jameel’s 12 years of service to PCA as a director, the “Packaging Corporation of America” endowment was established to provide need based scholarships for students pursuing an undergraduate degree in paper science and engineering. In 2008, Dr. Jameel began serving as a director for PCA. He was chosen to serve on their board primarily for his technical expertise in pulp and paper manufacturing and his knowledge of, and familiarity with, paper mill operations, as well as his general business acumen, all of which are core to PCA’s business. PCA is the third largest producer of containerboard, corrugated packaging and uncoated freesheet in North America. PCA is a long time corporate partner at NC State providing annual support, scholarship support, internships, coops and full time placement, as well as mill town recruitment efforts.

Frances Melton ScholarshipEd “Nip” Melton (Pulp and Paper Technology ‘77) and his wife Judy established the Frances Melton Scholarship in honor of Ed’s mother. This is a need based award for undergraduate students in our paper science and engineering program with a preference for out of state students. Ed himself entered our program as an out of state student from Georgia. Ed is currently a “retired” consultant to the paper industry and an avid Wolfpack fan. Ed and Judy live in the Lynchburg, VA area. Everyone was excited and proud to be able to announce this gift as a part of our 2020 Day of Giving.

“Adrianna made a way for herself in an environment that wasn’t always opening the door for her, and she fought to level

the playing field for herself and others throughout her career.”

– Betty Grant

PSE/PGM Golf TournamentThe College of Natural Resources scored a hole-in-one recently with its Second Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser, which provides scholarships and more for students in the PGA Golf Management and Paper Science and Engineering programs. In its second year of partnership, the event sponsored by the NC State Natural Resources Foundation, Inc. raised approximately $7,000, which will be split evenly between the two programs

“It is very important to be able to have scholarships to recruit high-achieving students into both of our programs,” said Jennifer Piercy, director of student recruiting for the Paper Science and Engineering program. “This also helps retain and reward students who are doing great things.”

At the tournament, 12 teams totaling 48 participants enjoyed 18 holes of golf at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh. All activities were in keeping with COVID-19 safety best practices and included forecaddies for each group, a free TrackMan swing assessment, a variety of competitions (closest to the pin, straightest drive and putting contests) and networking opportunities. Range balls, lunch and beverages were included.

Recent recipients of scholarships made possible through the funds raised at the golf tournament are especially appreciative. “Scholarships allow me to focus more on being a successful student and less on financing my education,” said Tressa Glackin, a senior in the Paper Science and Engineering Program. Sideris Family ScholarshipHarry Sideris (Chemical Engineering ’94) is the Executive Vice President for Customer Experience, Solutions and Services at Duke Energy. Harry is an active member of the NC State community, serving on the Board for the College of Natural Resources since 2014 and a diehard Wolfpack sports fan. Harry and his wife, Catinna, currently live in Charlotte with their two daughters, Mari and Zoey. This scholarship is for undergraduate students pursuing a dual major with Paper Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering with preference given to students who have a demonstrated interest in equality, diversity of social justice for women by participating in community activities, social groups, student clubs or other organizations that support this focus.

Paper Science Success AwardIn years past, our annual alumni class contest has revolved around percent participation in giving over an entire calendar year. It is no small feat that from 2015 to 2019 we have gone from 8.7% participation to 18.9% participation. Since the contest began, we have seen as much as 91% of our classes participating, winners ranging from the 1960s to the newest graduating class and individual classes reaching 85% participation goals and 400% improvement over past years. While enduring a global pandemic, we knew we needed something different in the fall of 2020. Thus, Bonded by Paper was born. In a two part effort, we created a digital yearbook for our students and alumni to connect and set a goal to raise at least $10,000 for need based awards in our program. We are proud to report that to date, we have raised over $13,000 for our “Paper Science Success Award” and will be awarding scholarship funds for the 2021-22 academic year.

Scholarship support was a deciding factor in choosing NC State over other institutions.”

This tournament began many years ago by dedicated PSE alumni and board members. Since 2019, it is now a very successful partnership with the PGM program and professionals, demonstrating how we can collaborate using our respective connections, resources and “know-how” to pull off a world-class event.

The College of Natural Resources’ Third Annual Golf Tournament will be held on April 22, 2022. By next year, the planning team hopes to have the capacity for 20 teams, totaling 80 participants.

Perseverance and resilience – these are attributes we encourage in our students, and this past year required the PSE program to demonstrate them in a big way. The ongoing Covid pandemic forced NC State to convert all Fall 2020 courses to online instruction. The Spring 2021 semester was mostly online, but as vaccinations were deployed, some courses returned to partial or full in-person instruction around midterm.

Online instruction was challenging for many of our students, but especially hard on the first-year students, who were frustrated with the lack of a “normal” onboarding college experience. This frustration was no doubt responsible for a higher than normal attrition rate for first year students. Nine out of forty-three left the program after one or two semesters. This is a 22% attrition rate, which is similar to last year (also a COVID year), and both are almost twice the normal rate. We hope that we can return to higher retention rates once we clear the pandemic.

To help our students cope, we offered a number of “drop in and check in” video meetings throughout the year. In addition,

students were assigned to individual faculty and staff members, who were glad to reach out to the students and provide personal support and a friendly face.

There were a number of bright spots during this challenging year:Enrollment in PSE continues to be strong. For Fall 2021, 198 students are enrolled, with about half of them pursuing the dual chemical engineering degree.

We continue to attract students of high caliber. Almost half of the Fall 2020 incoming cohort achieved a grade point average of 4.0 after two semesters, without using the covid-related pass/fail provision. The average grade point average for the group was 3.4!

Our industry partners, most of whom bravely honored internship and co-op commitments during the very confusing (and scary) 2020 summer and fall, stepped up once again for 2021. Nineteen students were on co-op for Spring 2021. Ninety-seven students were on summer internships (a possible record for our program). Twenty students are scheduled to be on co-op for Fall 2021. Amazingly, fifty percent of the first year students received offers for summer internships or co-ops.

Our research program is running at full speed, with exciting opportunities for our undergraduates. The Smart Manufacturing grant is in its second year, with new sensors and data analytics capabilities being installed on the Wolfpack Baby paper machine. Dr. Gonzalez was awarded a major grant from the USDA to study the use of non-wood fibers in tissue and hygiene products. Both of these programs will offer undergraduate research opportunities and enhance the teaching infrastructure of our labs and pilot plant.

At long last, we were able to hire a bright young person in our critical maintenance support role. Help us in welcoming Paul Foster to our team.

Some of you may be wondering – what does the upcoming year look like for our students and PSE? As of this writing, there are concerns. The resurgence of Covid, via the Delta variant, has caused NC State to require masks for all persons in offices, classrooms, and laboratories for Fall 2021. We fear that, if case loads continue to rise sharply, classes will once again return to being offered online only.

Regardless of what is to come, the PSE program and its amazing students will continue to meet all challenges – with perseverance and resilience!

HASAN JAMEEL RECEIVES AWARDHasan Jameel has been honored with the 2021 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching. Created by the board in 1993, the award recognizes and encourages the extraordinary teaching contributions of faculty across the UNC System.

Jameel, the Jordan Family Distinguished Professor for Natural Resource Innovation in the Department of Forest Biomaterials, is one of 17 recipients representing all 16 of North Carolina’s public universities and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

A member of the faculty since 1987, Jameel has received numerous honors recognizing his teaching, mentoring and scholarship. He is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Award and has also received the Outstanding Advisor Award and the Alumni Distinguished Professor Award at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In 2000, Jameel was elected a fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science. He was a 2005 recipient of the Johan C.F.C. Richter Prize from the Pulp Manufacture Division of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) and was a TAPPI fellow in 2007, in recognition of meritorious service to the industry.

“Hasan Jameel is an exemplary professor,” said Myron Floyd, dean of the College of Natural Resources. “Over a 30-year career, he has been a dedicated and highly effective teacher inside and outside the classroom. He contributes leadership within his department and the college. And he has a well-earned reputation as a caring professor who selflessly invests time and resources for students’ long-term success and well being.”

In his letter in support for Jameel’s nomination, Chancellor Randy Woodson continued to sing Jameel’s praises, writing of his “extraordinary passion and enthusiasm for student learning and success, his continued excellence in the field of bioenergy, and the substantial impact of his research.”

Throughout his career, Jameel has successfully obtained large grants to fuel his critical research — including $4 million from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Energy. With a $2.7 million grant from the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the Agriculture and Food Research

Initiative, Jameel and his team are currently developing a project to prepare diverse and rural students and teachers to meet the evolving challenges in the bioproducts and bioenergy industries.

In their letter of support for Jameel’s nomination, recent graduates Reagan Barnhill, Kat Santoro and Mary Kathryn Wallace wrote, “There are few individuals who have the ability to effectively impart to students the knowledge necessary to successfully accomplish their future academic or professional undertakings. There are even fewer individuals who do so with tireless dedication and passion. Dr. Jameel’s everyday actions demonstrate just how committed he is to helping his students achieve their every goal.”

That commitment to holistic student success was echoed in Jameel’s own thoughts on teaching.

“During both my undergraduate and graduate career, I had outstanding mentors who influenced me as an 18-year-old student who came to the United States for higher education. They were not only interested in my scholarly output, but they also cared about me as a person. Some of the impressions we leave with our students outside of the classroom will have an equal and maybe a higher impact on the students as the course material we teach. This is the aspect of my job that I enjoy most.”

Jameel was recognized at NC State’s spring commencement and the Memorial Belltower will be lit red in his honor at a time of his choosing to celebrate all of his accomplishments.

Congratulations Dr. Jameel!

“Never compare yourself to the people exiting said major or field. The students that are now graduating, decorated with countless cords, and amazing career plans were once in your shoes nervous and unprepared. Rather learn from their scars and ask for their guidance. You will get there in the blink of an eye.”

– Aldo De Leon Resendiz

GRADUATION TO VOCATIONAldo De Leon Resendiz graduated in May 2021 with degrees in paper science and engineering and chemical engineering. During his time at NC State, De Leon was a Goodnight Scholar, University Scholar and a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.

He also completed work experience at WestRock, Eastman Chemical, International Paper and The Clorox Company. After graduation, De Leon will work for International Paper as a REACH (Recruit, Engage, Align College Hires) engineer.

How has the College of Natural Resources impacted you and prepared you for your future? The College of Natural Resource, more specifically the Paper Science and Engineering program, has provided me with the professional skills needed to excel in the workforce. Due to this program’s constant investment in my professional development, I am now confident in my ability to succeed in life and make a difference.

What’s your favorite memory or class from your time at the College of Natural Resources? Why?One of my favorite classes in the College of Natural Resource is PSE 371: Pulping Process Analysis with Dr. [Hasan] Jameel. This was the first course in my academic career where the material learned in the classroom was applied to a real-world

scenario. In this course we began the semester with a log of wood and produced bleached paper by the end of the semester from the log of wood. This course showed real world implications of the material learned in class and that is what inspired me to be an engineer: the application of knowledge.

What is unique about you or your work?I believe I am unique in the way I look at the world and creatively solve problems. I once read a quote by Bill Gates that read “I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.” You may think that I am calling myself lazy, but I believe that Gates meant people have certain characteristics that assist them in overcoming certain problems. That is what makes me unique, being able to approach problems in ways that only I see.

What motivated you to pursue your work?I have always shown an inherent affinity towards science and math. The combination of those interests with my curiosity to break apart things, understand how they work and put them back together led to my pursuit of an engineering degree. Additionally, the Paper Science and Engineering program cultivated a support system that feels like family.
