LG seeks banks help for a prosperous PuducherryLt. Governor Kiran Bedi

has called for increasedparticipation of banks in the

mission to make Puducherryprosperous.

Ms. Bedi, who conveneda meeting of bank managersof Puducherry at RajNivas, requested the banksfunctioning in the U.T. to bean active partner in meetingthe goals of Swachh, Safetyand Skill - the three pillarson which the ProsperousPuducherry mission rests.

She suggested that bankstake up Swachh challengessuch as procuring desiltingmachines, personalsafety gear, constructionof community toiletsand holding awarenesscampaigns. Suchcontributions wouldsignicantly help the effortsof municipalities/PublicWorks Department.

According to the Lt.

Governor, banks could alsogive a helping hand to theTrafc Police in procuringCCTVs for road safety,speed detectors, masks/uorescent jackets / white

coats, umbrellas andgumboots.Another area where

banking institutions couldassist the administrationwas in the skilldevelopment mission. Ms.Bedi wanted banks to helpwith hosting computertraining programmes

and strengtheningITl infrastructure. V.Candavelou, DevelopmentCommissioner, stated thatabout Rs. 10,000 crorewas being held as deposit

by the banks and soughtcontribution to dischargetheir Corporate SocialResponsibility towardsProsperous Puducherry.

D Devaraj, convenor,State Level Bankers'Committee (SLBC), whileassuring them the supportof the banks stated thatthe SLBC would evolve acomprehensive supportplan at its meeting scheduledon July 4. The Lt. Governorrequested the DevelopmentCommissioner to

constitute a committeewith representation ofMunicipality, Police, PWD,Welfare, IT and SLBC towork out the details.

The meet was representedby managers of 32 banks.Senior ofcers of the U.T.Administration includingwere present.
