OUR GRADUATESPublishing graduates populate the book trade and publishing sector in New Zealand. They have roles in all the major trade publishing houses. They work for educators, promoters, policy makers and arts organisations. Many run their own businesses.

Whitireia graduates have also taken their publishing skills around the world. Many work in the heart of London publishing, for companies such as Oxford, HarperCollins and Penguin Random House, and for leading Australian publishers such as Allen & Unwin. Students also come to Whitireia from around the world. In recent years, the programme has hosted students from Bhutan, Dhubai, Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan, Japan and the UK.

The publishing programme at Whitireia becomes a touchstone for graduates, a challenging and rewarding year during which they make friends for life. In the words of graduate Jeremy Sherlock (now a senior publisher at Penguin Random House): “I still regard the year on the course as one of my most cherished. It led to me being employed by one of New Zealand’s best publishers – and I formed some lasting friendships.”

OUR STAFFAll staff of the publishing programme come direct from industry, where they honed their skills and knowledge. Most are still working for publishers alongside their teaching. The programme also draws on the expertise of numerous specialist tutors and industry speakers. Many publishing professionals present classes through the year – whether teaching a core part of the curriculum, holding a specialist lesson or simply as visiting speakers.

PUBLISHING PROGRAMMES

The course offered fantastic exposure to the full scope of the publishing process; this wide range of experience thoroughly prepared me for taking my first steps into the publishing industry.

HANNAH BENNETT, DEVELOPMENT EDITOR, JOHN WILEY AND SONS, MELBOURNE

It was a privilege to be entrusted with real books [while on the course] and was, for me, the best way to learn, quickly. The time on the course went so fast: we were so busy, stimulated and interested, there was always something new to look forward to and the days just flew by.

LISETTE DU PLESSIS, PRODUCTION EDITOR, PQ BLACKWELL

Every day was different and challenging, and I couldn't wait to come into class each morning. I had real books in my hand by the end of the year, books that many people had put a lot of effort into, and which were being released into the community to make their way as legitimate commercial products. I can't think of anything more compelling than that.
