The Gaze of Things. Japanese Photography in the Context of Provoke

This hardcover volume presents a tour to Japanese photography from the 1950s to present day, focusing on the Vivo group and the journal Provoke, which only had three issues but managed to change Japanese photography forever. The experimental way in which they presented images as the result of an era marked by important political events became a phenomenon and a tendency followed many other Japanese artists.

The book features works by Shomei Tomatsu, Akira Sato, Yutaka Takanashi and Daido Moriyama, among others. It also includes essays by curator Nuria Enguita as well as experts Miryam Sas and Akihito Yasumi.

The exhibition The Gaze of Things. Japanese Photography in the Context of Provoke will be open to the public from February 2019 to February 2020 at Bombas Gens Centre d’Art, in Valencia.

CelebrationWilliam Klein

From the perspective of his 90 years of age, from the height of being a legend in photography, William Klein looks back and selects his favourite works, those that he considers to be the best in his whole career, in order to pay homage to photography itself. This book, not by chance titled Celebration, is a tour to his most emblematic works: unique instants captured in New York, Rome, Moscow and Paris, in powerful black and white or striking colour. A true celebration of photography.

This volume also includes a text by the author in which he reflects upon photographic art and explains what prompted him to make this sort of director’s cut, this exceptionally personal selection, which brings together the works that, in his view, have made a contribution to the world of photography. A small-format but high-voltage volume that, page after page, makes it clear why Klein is one of the summits of contemporary photography.

ResistenciaJuan Genovés

Juan Genovés’ artistic career is deeply linked to the movements opposing Franco’s regime in Spain: he has always believed that art should be committed to social issues, as well as being alluring emotionally and even physically. His style features plain colours and cinematic-like compositions, with dynamic uses of lines an perspective. His paintings convey intense anxiety and disorientation, absurdity and human fragility as he explores political and social

issues, the contradiction between the individual and the crowd and, as the title of the book suggests, the broad concept of resistance.

Juan Genovés (Valencia, 1930) is best known for his 1976 painting El abrazo (The Embrace), reproduced for an Amnesty International poster in the Spanish transition to democracy, which would later become the memorial to the lawyers killed in the 1977 Atocha massacre.

La Fábrica presents in association with the Royal Botanical Garden an exquisite collection of drawings made during the Royal Botanical Expedition of the New Kingdom of Granada, led by José Celestino Mutis, which allowed the collection and classification of more than 20,000 plant species native to the current Republic of Colombia.

This book presents a careful selection of magnificent drawings

of the highest artistic quality. Its selection and presentation in book format is the culmination of a long process of divulgation of artistic and scientific heritage, which allows us to enjoy this unique sample of the rich Colombian biological diversity.

The book in bilingual edition contains a text by the director of the Royal Botanical Garden, Esteban Manrique.

WritingsEduardo Chillida

May 2019 Size: 14,5 x 22 cmBinding: hardcoverPages: 124Language: eng. Images: 11Price: £24978-84-17769-10-9

Throughout his career, Eduardo Chillida did not stop questioning everything that was relevant to his commitment to art. Without wishing to create a deliberation parallel to his work, he used writing as a way to keep his thoughts, using notebooks, fragments of paper or margins of drawings and notes ... He did it in an intermittent way, without a pre-established order, by hand. They were intimate reflections, for his own use, destined to preserve the questions to which he repeatedly returned.

This volume brings together all his writings, mostly unpublished to date, compiled and edited in collaboration with the artist’s family. They are divided into

five sections: Miradas, where Chillida addresses issues such as perception, knowledge, the sea, human rights or religious belief, all of them connected by the bond of poetry; Codes of the artist, chapter that gathers his reflections on creation; I am an outlaw, a long text written in prose that was probably a draft of a conference; Questions, written as an entry speech at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, a synthesis of the essential issues that concerned him as an artist throughout his life; and Homenajes, where the sculptor pays tribute to people and artists such as Gabriel Aresti, Pío Baroja, Bach, Joan Brossa, Joan Miró, Mark Rothko or María Zambrano, among many others.

This book brings together different works by Nicolás Ortigosa, including his particular interpretation of The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri, a series comprised by 89 drawings and engravings with different techniques that express the mental images he experienced by reading the Italian classic.

The varied formats and media in which his drawings are exhibited reflect a character that is more lyrical than illustrative, and they are more closely linked to abstract language than to figurative language. The works,

produced between 2002 and 2018 encompass sixteen years of the artistic trajectory of this interesting artist. The book is published as part of the exhibition showed in Bombas Gens Centre d’Art, Valencia.

Nicolás Ortigosa (Logroño, 1983) is a draughtsman and painter who trained at the Art School in his native city and at the Fine Arts Faculty of Barcelona, where he exhibited for the first time (2008). Since then, his artistic trajectory has positioned him as one of the most promising artists on the current Spanish art scene.

Pablo Picasso always maintained a complex and intense relationship with photography and with the photographers in his milieu, something that could be seen when he pretended to be a reporter one summer, when he used his image as an icon, or when he took inspired and playful self-portraits.

This book which is also the catalogue of the exhibition of the same name at the Museu Picasso of Barcelona, immerses the reader in the universe of Picasso through photography and brings

together images that explore all the facets of a creator who is simultaneously the author, model, witness and viewer of his work and life.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) revolutionized the plastic arts of the 20th century by creating and participating in movements such as cubism and neo-figurative sculpture, and implementing his intense artistic activity through disciplines such as painting, engraving, etching, sculpture, ceramics and stage design for ballets.

This book compiles a selection of publications—photobooks and magazines, along with other related documents—demonstrating the great flowering of typography, photomontage and photobooks in the Soviet Union in the period between 1913 and 1941.

Art applied to book and magazine production achieved its most magnificent expression through the avant-garde movements at the beginning of the 20th century and gained a particular importance in the Soviet Union, as clearly shown in this spectacular book. All thanks to the rise of artistic movements such as Suprematism and constructivism, and also

due to the partnership between Russian artists and graphic designers, and their close ties to the poetic and literary circles.

The book, which exquisitely reproduces an enormous quantity of documents, coincides with the exhibition of the same name hosted by the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.

All of the material included in the Avant-garde and Propaganda exhibition and catalogue comes from the Lafuente Archive, whose extensive collection of Russian avant-garde and Soviet realism work includes more than 1,300 pieces.

Henri Matisse is universally known for his painting, but he also worked regularly as an engraver between 1900 and his death in 1954. His engraving work encompasses more than eight hundred pieces that comprise a gigantic visual library, offering a complete document about his working process and his way of transforming what he saw into art.

This book, published as part of the exhibition Matisse. Grabador [Matisse Engraver] at the Fundación Canal de Madrid, includes 63 of his engravings, in which we can identify the same

observation process that the artist followed in his drawings.

This is a fascinating work that reveals a different Matisse, one that is more intimate and close, yet each work contains the keys of his universal genius.

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) wrote, in eloquent language, that the important thing for an artist is to express themselves in multiple formats: painting, sculpture, drawing and engravings. His mastery of the use of colour and drawing in all of these fields made him one of the great artists of the 20th century.

In 2018, and thanks to the support of the European programme Creative Europe, three European institutions jointly promoted the TransEurope programme, which culminated in the publication of this contemporary photography magazine, displaying the work of 31 young photographers.

The Fundación Contemporánea (Spain), the Finnish Museum of Photography (Finland) and Euromare (Greece) launched this initiative with the idea of supporting the visual arts and photography by young people

through workshops, reviews of portfolios, professional activities, exhibitions in the three collaborating countries and, lastly, the publication of this magazine in order to display the 31 final works, which were selected in viewings held throughout 2018 and 2019 in fourteen European countries.

The result thus offers a very broad and complete panorama of young contemporary European photography, an accurate depiction of the concerns, passions and phobias of the continent’s young artists.

With the work Smoke, the young Swedish photographer Theo Elias won the second edition of the Book Dummy Award organised by the Spanish publisher La Fábrica and the international photography festival Photo London.

In the summer of 2011 the creator travelled to the north of Sweden, fleeing from his daily life and dreaming about the idea of creating a new identity for himself in an unknown territory. Solitude enabled him to discover other lives and share tobacco and conversations with strangers over

the long and light Nordic nights. After many journeys, years and shared cigarettes, the story of Smoke took shape, becoming the record of something that no longer exists, or that perhaps never existed, through dramatic black and white images full of contrasts and force.

Theo Elias (1985) is a photographer from Sweden whose works deal with personal subjects such as memory, truth and loss. His pictures have been shown in Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, Switzerland, Turkey and The Netherlands.

Jesús Rafael Soto (1923-2005) is one of the main representatives of kinetic and optical art.

This book includes the most interesting works he has produced, from the organic forms of his early period to his abstract works at the start of the sixties and his more geometric creations—the language in which he felt most comfortable—without forgetting his most well-known public works, such as the spectacular

murals he created for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

This is a unique chance to enjoy, in this complete book, the work of one of the most important contemporary Venezuelan artists.

Jesús Rafael Soto was born in 1923 in Ciudad Bolívar. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Caracas before moving to Paris, in 1950, where he lived until his death in 2005.

Originally from northern Italy, Paolo Gasparini moved to Venezuela at the age of twenty and over his extensive career he has become one of the most renowned photographers in Latin America. Associated with Italian neorealism in his early period and influenced by Paul Strand, street photography is one of his main interests, and he has expressed it in a multitude of scenes captured in Caracas, Mexico City, São Paulo and Los Angeles. His images stand out for their deeply human link between large metropolitan areas and the individual attitudes found within them.

His documentary photography, focused on depicting the diversity of Latin American society, constitutes a unique body of work, displaying the visual history of the continent and its profound contradictions. In 1993 he obtained the National Photography Prize of Venezuela, the country’s most important award.

Paolo Gasparini is the star of the new PHotoBolsillo series, which publishes monographs on the most important Spanish and Latin American photographers in a didactic and affordable format.
