Introduction to Magazine Publishing

18 April – 9 May 2012

This course covers all aspects of magazine publishing including concept development, content creation, production, distribution and marketing.

Practical Editing

8 May – 19 June 2012

This short course is designed to provide you with an in-depth understanding of editorial practices and processes. You will learn how to understand and use the British Standard Copy-editing and proofreading symbols and gain experience of both written and on-screen editorial work.

Introduction to Web Design

9 May – 13 June 2012

This course is designed to introduce you to the concept of designing and building a website. The process will move from constructing a very simple page and progress to engaging, interactive environments containing multi-media content and built using good design practice. Topics covered will be HTML and CSS3 that will enable not only static but animated content. No prior knowledge is assumed. Primary software will be Adobe Dreamweaver and some Photoshop.

Introduction to Building your First App 9 May – 13 June 2012

This course addresses building and implementing interactive magazines, with multi-media content, for the iPad and other tablet devices. You are introduced to the concept of building articles with and without defined page depth parameters, a feature that forms the basis of the digital environment and can make for very engaging experiences. Primary software used will be Adobe InDesign, prior knowledge of this programme will be an obvious advantage but those with no, or little experience can still participate, as introductory tutorials can be included in the sessions.

Making Magazines for the iPad

14 May – 25 June 2012

This course is designed to introduce you to the process of building an App for the Apple IOS operating system. The purpose of this course is to allow designers to concentrate on their design without the need to become computer programmers. Software used will be XCode, Nimblekit, and Photoshop. No prior knowledge is assumed, progress will be at a gentle pace and begin with designing the overall concept which will then be taken through to a functional App capable of being offered to the Apple Store.

Publishing to Tablets

14 May – 25 June 2012

This course addresses the subject of designing and building documents specifically for tablet platforms such as the Apple iPad and Samsung Galaxy. Primary software used will be Adobe InDesign, so some prior knowledge would be an advantage but newcomers can also be accommodated. You will get the opportunity to publish your designs to the iPad and you will also be introduced to the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite which enables the creation of multiple products that can subsequently be “published” via the Adobe Cloud.

Short courses Our MA Publishing students can opt to take four of our short courses for free during their MA, and our range of short courses are also open to others at very competitive rates. Courses are usually run according to demand. The precise subject areas covered can change year upon year, but the following represents a selection of the kinds of courses we would expect to run.

Introduction Scholarships Internships and work placementsInternships are available across the full range of publishing departments at a variety of publishers, from trade to academic, and from major to independent. These are typically unpaid and around two weeks in length (which can often be extended at the company’s discretion).

Currently we have guaranteed annual placements at: Bloomsbury, HarperCollins, Cambridge University Press, Hart McLeod, Lutterworths, Nexus Partnerships, Windhorse, Hachette, Shakespeare and Company, Paris.

We can always help you to look for you own tailored placements as well, if you have interests in particular houses or areas.

An Arts and Humanities ResearchCouncil (AHRC) Block Grant Partnership Capacity Building award is offered every year from 2011-13. Winners will receive a bursary in line with the AHRC’s current rate (approx. £14,000) as well as a full fee waiver.

The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers provides one scholarship of £6,000 a year, and the chance to become a Freeman of the Company.

Cambridge University Press bursary offers a reduction on tuition fees of £1,200.

The MA is supplemented by a broad variety of free masterclasses delivered by industry professionals, which usually consider up-to-the-minute publishing trends and developments. Sometimes there is the opportunity to become involved in exciting publishing projects with publishers, but these masterclasses also represent an unrivalled opportunity to network with people already working in publishing.

CAMPUS provides publishing and bookselling professionals with a forum to share knowledge and network in a welcoming environment. The annual diary includes audiences with prominent guest speakers, seminars, debates, receptions and a social calendar.

All individuals and companies involved in the publishing or bookselling fields are welcome to apply for membership. Although CAMPUS maintains a focus on the Cambridge area, national and international members are also welcome. Membership is FREE – there is no joining fee or membership charge.

MA Publishing

Our MA Publishing aims to provide students with direct access to current skills, debates and practices for optimum future employability. Most sessions are delivered by industry professionals, ensuring you get the most current information from the trade.

Modules include:

Creativity and Content in Publishing

This module covers issues, principles and practices related to the creative side of the publishing industry, including editorial, commissioning, book proposals and digital creativity. It provides key skills in quality control of content in publishing and stresses the importance of the management process in editorial projects.

The Digital Age: Legal and Creative Issues

This module considers up-to-the-minute issues in the international and national environment in which publishing operates. Split into two sections, it focuses, in the first instance, on the management, sale and licensing of rights in publishing and, in the second, on contemporary concerns about digital rights.

Masterclasses CAMPUS

Our MA Publishing was developed in 2008 in response to the need from employers in the industry for graduates with cutting-edge expertise in Publishing. Members of the Advisory Board include representatives from Cambridge University Press, Polity Press, Salt, Book Production Consultants, Hart McLeod and Lightning Source. Since then we have established ourselves as innovators in the field, providing employer-led training for future recruits, and as a result we now have a strong graduate employment record.

The course has several ring-fenced internships for students, which include placements with Cambridge University Press, Nexus Partnerships, Bloomsbury, Hart McLeod and Shakespeare and Company in Paris. These are competitive, and are a reflection of the high degree of professional excellence that the course fosters.

Our course has also attracted investment and funding, and we offer bursaries from Cambridge University Press and The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers Foundation, as well as a full Arts and Humanities Research Council studentship.

We welcome proposals for PhD study in all areas of book trade and publishing history and practice and, due to demand, we are now also offering a wider range of publishing-related short courses for continuing professional development.

The Business of Publishing

This module introduces all aspects of business in the publishing sector, including marketing, publicity, business planning, annual reports, bookselling and building affinity. It relates generic business concepts and practices to both major and independent publishing houses, and draws on corporate sector examples which may be applied to publishing in the face of rapidly changing business models in the sector.

Production Processes in Publishing

Anglia Ruskin’s flagship module, this has been designed exclusively for our students by Cambridge University Press (CUP). It introduces the design, production and distribution of book publishing products in various formats and across many platforms. It considers the processes and technologies used to transform a manuscript or data file into a finalised, ready-for-market product and is delivered by a series of specially-selected industry professionals with the CUP seal of approval.
