War Horse Wins -- Stevi Hillman and Cuatro Fame $100K Champions at RFD-Tv’s The American

By Tanya Randall Hardcore barrel racing fans know who Cuatro Fame is. The lanky gelding with the barn name “Truck” has carried Stevi Hillman to four straight National Finals Rodeos, but fans aren’t likely to see him run there or in any short setup for that matter. Truck is the war horse, toiling away at some of the largest rodeos in the county that are often sporadically televised—though RFD-TV owner Patrick Gottsch is changing that with the Cowboy Chan-nel. Fans can watch him on the hard ground at Rodeo Houston and Calgary Stampede with its occasional mud, yet rarely does Truck have the perfect setup and the perfect ground to show fans how truly talented he is. At RFD-Tv’s The American, presented by Durango Boots, held March 7-8 in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Hillman had the perfect platform to showoff Truck’s speed, athleticism, consistency and unflappability. Three perfect trips through the pattern later, Hillman and Truck had the biggest win of their careers, a $100,000 first-place check, in front of a national audience. “That’s probably why I was more emotional about it,” said Hillman of the 13-year-old gelding, who she co-owns with Jason Mouton and Melissa Mouton. “He just has my heart. I knew that God wanted me to run him. Again, it’s such an emotional win. He’s such a blessing.” While Truck has his fans, he’s often been overshadowed by his flashier trailer mates, like the Dunn’s MCM ImaSharpGuy (“Sharp-ie”). “Truck’s always been the constant winner just kind of in the background,” Hillman admitted. “Truck is just so special. People

who understand what I’ve been through with horses and the whole story of just how when he came into my life he truly healed my heart. God brought that horse to me and that friendship with Jason and Melissa Mouton. There’s so much more to it than just the ro-deoing and the winning. It’s the horse and what he means to me and the friendships that he’s brought along with that.” Hillman partnered with the gelded son of Dash Ta Fame out of Brandy Wilson-Mehl’s two-time Old Fort Days Futurity Champion producer Princess Streaks, by Streak Laico Bird, in 2014. Melissa Mouton had wanted to sell the gelding and mutual friend Heather Simon recommend she send him to Hillman. “It was totally a God thing. God brought the horse to me at the right time,” said Hillman, who lives in Weatherford, Texas, with her husband Ty. “He knew I needed Truck and that Melissa and I needed each other as friends. It’s such a cool story. Jason and Me-lissa have stuck with me through thick and thin.” The chemistry between Truck and Hillman wasn’t instantaneous. Hillman says it took a year for them to click together. “We butted heads,” said the former radiography technician turned professional barrel racer. “We had to get to know each other. He had to meet me in the middle a little bit and I had to get used to him. We hit a lot of barrels. We spent a solid year just trying to figure it out, but I just knew that he was a horse that just had it, so I didn’t give up on him.” In the summer of 2015, Hillman went on a brief rodeo run to test the waters with Truck. “We took him to a handful of rodeos just to see if he could handle the hauling and ground,” she said. “I didn’t win a single

Champions Crowned at The American Rodeo at AT&T Stadium$2.4 million paid out in two days in Texas

The American Rodeo finals made dreams come true yet again this evening at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The 2020 champions are walking away with pride and impressive payouts after another fierce competition. “We have had seven years and seven amazing rodeos,” said Randy Bernard, CEO of RFD-TV’s The American Rodeo. “I truly believe The American Rodeo has been a game-changer for professional rodeo and cowboys. We have changed many lives since 2014 and the event just keeps getting better.“ 2016 The American Rodeo’s Bareback champion Kaycee Field knew he made a good ride when he dismounted after the short go. He claimed $100,000 and his second win at AT&T Stadium on VIGIL with a 93 point score. Wilburton, Okla.’s Kaycee Hollingback roped countless calves to earn her $100,000 payout. For the second year, the Breakaway Roping was one of the event highlights as the ladies continue to excel in the sport. Twelve-time WNFR qualifier Luke Brown backed in the box with AQHA world champion Joseph Harrison for the team’s first time together in AT&T Stadium. The two walked away with $100,000 after roping in a short 4.3 seconds. PRCA veteran steer wrestler and 2018 The American Rodeo champion Matt Reeves took the victory lap in the Polaris Ranger after three outstanding runs in the last two days. Texas’ own Wyatt Casper, 2016 college champion and current PRCA world-standing leader, was the first to earn a share of the million dollar payout, riding his 36th straight horse of the 2020 season in the Saddle Bronc. There was a man on a mission in the Tie Down Roping, who continued to dominate and went on to win his share of the $1 million. 2018 national high school finals cham-pion and New Mexico’s own Shad Mayfield walked away with $600,000 after tying his final calf in 7.75 seconds. The American Rodeo crowned co-champions for the first time ever in Bull Riding. 2019’s winner Joao Ricardo Vieira and multiple-time world champion Sage Kimzey tied to take home $62,500 each. “I have produced over 3,500 sporting events in my career, from the PBR to the Indy 500,” said Bernard. “I have been to the Super Bowl and to the Final Four, and yet I have never seen an event that consistently gets more exciting every year like The American.” For a complete list of the results from the finals, visit https://www.americanrodeo.com/.

Womens Rodeo World Championship to Debut in Las Vegas in November-- New Opportunity Created for Female Athletes Seeking New World Title-- WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) and PBR (Professional Bull Riders) have announced a new, breakthrough event in women’s rodeo: the Women’s Rodeo World Championship, taking place at South Point Equestrian Center on November 3-7. This first-of-its-kind world championship is open to any female athlete in the world competing in breakaway roping, barrel racing and team roping. The new Women’s Rodeo World Championship will award a minimum of $750,000

and name a champion in the individual disciplines of barrel racing, breakaway roping, team roping as well as a Women’s Rodeo All-Around Champion. The event will be held in Las Vegas during the PBR World Finals. Qualifying positions will be open to all eligible women across the world. Ten riders will have direct paths to the Championship based on their final ranking on the WCRA leaderboard. The event will begin with onsite open-qualifier rounds November 3 - 5. Those ranked in the top 10 from the open qualifier will advance to the Championship on November 6 - 7, where they’ll compete alongside the Top 10 from the WCRA leaderboard and an additional four competitors awarded exemptions from to-be-named events. “Working with our partners at PBR to provide female rodeo athletes an opportunity like this is a game-changer,” said WCRA CEO, Gary McKinney. “This historic addition of the Women’s Rodeo World Championship to the WCRA 2020 tour will give female ropers and barrel racers more opportunities, including the ability to compete for big-money payouts.” “Women in rodeo haven’t had the same opportunities as men, and they deserve this exciting national platform and world title competition,” said PBR CEO Sean Gleason. “We’re very proud of our partnership with WCRA which helps us celebrate and reward talented female athletes while inspiring the next generation of young women to pursue rodeo.” The Women’s Rodeo World Championship will be carried on RIDE-TV and RidePass, the PBR’s western sport digital network. Additional details on how to qualify and leaderboard information will be released at a later date.

PRORODEO Tour Finale set for Puyallup All roads from the PRORODEO Tour again lead to Puyallup, Wash. The PRORODEO Tour Finale will take place at the Washington State Fair Rodeo in Puyallup, Sept. 10-13, and boasts a payout in excess of $500,000. Puyallup and the Tour Finale will play a key role in determining which cowboys will be crowned PRORODEO Tour champions and which ones will be heading to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec. 3-12. The Top 24 contestants in the PRORODEO Tour standings will qualify for the Tour Finale in Puyallup, where they will have a shot at their share of more than half a million dollars. With $480,000 added and entry fees of $250 per contestant (paid for by the PRCA), the total payout will be $66,000 per event for a total payout of $528,000.

RAM NCFR part of PRORODEO Tour The RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., will be a stop on the PRORODEO Tour for the first time. The RAM NCFR, which will be April 2-4, will offer competitors valuable PRORODEO Tour points. Year-end circuit champions and circuit finals rodeo winners will have a chance to compete in Kissimmee to earn points toward the PRORODEO Tour. “We are very pleased to be part of the PRORODEO Tour,” said Beth Knight, Deputy County Manager of Osceola County and representative of the RAM NCFR Committee. “Now, not only do these circuit champion cowboys get to compete for big prize money in Kissimmee, but they also get to accumulate points toward the Tour and their quest to make the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.” The RAM NCFR will be one of 56 prestigious rodeos on the Tour. The PRORODEO Tour Finale will take place in Puyallup, Wash., at the Washington State Fair Rodeo, Sept. 10-13. The Top 24 contestants in the Tour standings will qualify for the Tour Finale. check but I knew he had it. He could handle the ground and the hauling and that’s when we jumped off the cliff in 2016 and haven’t quit since.” Although Truck has had help from some great horses along the way, he’s done the lion’s share of Hillman’s NFR qualifications from 2016 to 2019. Even after being briefly sidelined by minor injuries like a strained suspensory ligament in 2017 and white line disease that delayed their summer run in 2018, Truck still pulled through like a warhorse. “That’s a great way to describe Truck,” said Hillman. “He tries so hard for me. The past four years we’ve made the NFR. I’ve had some amazing athletes help him. I can’t forget about those guys, but he’s been the constant. He’s been there for me, pulled through for me, every year. Last year over the summer, he had to pull through for me and he did. He’s just always there and always gives me 110 percent of his heart.” It was through her place in the WPRA World Standings that Hill-man earned the right to compete at The American, which gives an automatic invite to those in that position. She competed in her first aboard Sharpie in 2018 and then got on Michelle Darling’s Morn-ing Traffic, who had helped Truck get Hillman to her first NFR in 2016, for the 2019 American. She had opted not to ride Truck because of the setups lack of an alley. “I had in my mind that I wanted to run him from the min-ute they posted that there was going to be an alley,” she said. “I thought, ‘Oh gosh! There’s an alley!’ I had always wanted to run Truck there but I couldn’t because of the alley setup.” Rather than two separate arenas running the width of the foot-ball field, the AT&T Stadium boosted one full arena with a Polaris Ranger on a circular podium—dubbed a shark tank by contes-tants—in the very middle. Barrel racers had an alley coming from the corner of the field and the barrels were set an angle with no fences remotely close.

“I was super excited,” she said. “We got to practice and it was crazy how they had the alley duck off to the right. They were great to work with us and opened that up a little bit. The crooked pattern and no walls completely screamed Truck. He’s going to find the barrels and be solid for me. If I can get around these barrels three times I’ve got a chance.” The only thing that made Hillman question running Truck at AT&T Stadium was the history of the ground being a tad on the deep side. “I was happy to see they added more clay to it and it held for everybody,” she said. “It was a little fairer the whole way through.” In the long go on Saturday, Hillman and Truck had the second fastest time, a 15.504, earning $2,250, behind Wenda Johnson and Tres Mesa Horses’ Macgyver Moonflash’s 15.370, worth $3,000. The top eight advanced to the Round of Eight on Sunday, where the top four on two runs advanced to the Finals for the $100,000 and possible $1 million bonus for contestants who advanced through the qualifiers and The American Semifinals Rodeo. Truck got faster, turning a 15.457, the fastest time of the Round of 8 to lead the field into the finals with a two-run aggregate of 30.961. In the Finals, they ran slowest to fastest, leaving Hillman and Truck to run last. “The last run I knew he was going to be stronger,” she said of their victorious 15.405. “I was able to let him roll, but I knew he was going to be stronger and I was prepared for it and he just let me place him and I was super happy with him. “He’s proven that he can hold together. He still has his moments. He’s Truck; he’s a handful. He kind of gets strong and is hard to get around the barrels. He just really felt comfortable in this setup. We were able to stay back out of the arena where the energy level was lower. He was just happy and let me place him and pulled through.” The best part was everyone got to see Truck at his best.

“It makes me happy that people got to see him shine,” said Hillman. “It makes me want to cry. I’m just so happy and so proud of him.” Hillman, who currently sits 13th in the WPRA World Standings with $18,355, will have the Elite Futurity this weekend with DTF Texas Moon, who placed in the average at The Patriot Futurity prior to The American. Truck’s next stop is Rodeo Houston and then it’s out to California for some of his favorite rodeos. “It’s fun in April,” said Hillman. “(Truck) gets kind of depressed in the winter. He doesn’t like being in the barn and being in the buildings. Truck does not like the winter. The sun starts shin-ning and we get to go California in April. He does really good out

there—Red Bluff, Clovis—he likes those pens out there. I win money there every year.” As for her $100,000 haul from The American as of Monday morning it still hasn’t fully sunk in yet. “I don’t know if it’s really hit,” she said. “They took us back for interviews immediately. We haven’t really stopped since. This morning it kind of hit me and Ty—what a blessing Truck is. God had kind of showed this to me a few days ago that I was up there on stage and that made it more emotional. I’m just so grateful and so thankful to have rodeos like this and that we’re able to go win money like that.”

By Tanya Randall Crawford, Texas, barrel racer Patton Ann Lynch and her 10-year-old gelding Firin To Be A Hero (“Nos”) turned in the most solid performance of the six-entry field to win the Cowboy Channel’s Jr NFR, held March 7 in AT&T Stadium prior to RFD-Tv’s The American. The 14-year-old collected $25,000 for the victory. “I just want to thank them for putting it on,” said Lynch, who admitted she’d like to spend the money on clothes but will likely save it for college. “It’s such a great experience for all the kids. It’s a lot of fun and a lot money to win. Lynch and Nos started their journey to AT&T Stadium at The Patriot in Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth, where the Jr Ameri-can Long and Short Go were held—basically the Semifinals Rodeo for the Cowboy Channel’s Jr NFR. Although she’s set records on her mare JJJ Bonnie Rae and had been winning on Famous Bullion, Lynch chose to run Nos, the most solid of her horses. “I had two entries in to the Jr American Long Go, but I scratched my other entry and just ran Nos,” she explained. “Nos is so easy and he doesn’t care about the crowd. Bonnie wouldn’t like the crowd at AT&T and she doesn’t like the deep ground so the Patriot wouldn’t have been good. I didn’t really have another good consistent horse to run.” With her younger sister Alexis Raye normally riding Nos, Lynch ran in the First Chance American Qualifier for 2021 to get a prac-tice run under her belt. “We had a clean run, but it wasn’t very fast,” said Lynch of their 15.760. “That’s always how his first runs are.” In the long round of the Jr NFR/Jr American, Lynch and Nos clocked a 15.338 to place fifth and earn $3,107. Their next run would determine which of the 20 fastest from the long go would advance to AT&T Stadium for their final run. They clocked a 15.239 to be second behind 2019 The American Semifinals Cham-pion Acey Pinkston and Laico Corona’s 15.186. “It was good,” Lynch said of her last run in Will Rogers Coli-seum. “The ground was pretty deep, but he handled it well.” As with RFD-Tv’s The American, the Jr NFR contestants got to practice on the new set, which turned out to be quite a challenge especially for the younger horses and riders.

“The pen set up (was) different from in the past years,” Lynch explained. “There was like a shark cage in the middle of the arena (a round podium with a Polaris Ranger on it) between my second and third. (They go to the left barrel first). It’s a weird angle in alley way. It’s a blind first barrel for me. When you’re standing in the alleyway, if you’re running to the right (barrel first), it’s like your first barrel is right straight in front of you. It was a weird angle to run to.” Nos proved to be most solid mount in the field winning with a 16.144. “Nos did not care about the crowd, the loud music, the vibration in the stadium,” Lynch said. “He didn’t care about anything at all. That was really nice because you could tell some horses did not like

the shark cage and they were running off because the barrels were in the middle of the arena, not even close to a fence.” For winning the Jr NFR, Lynch got an automatic exemption into the American later that evening. She was last to run, but unfortu-nately hit the third barrel. “I had a fast enough to time to make on to Sunday,” she said. “If I hit a barrel it’s usually the second barrel (which she performed a great leg lift on both of her runs to clear). When I hit the third I was like, ‘Wow. Really?’ But, it’s alright.” The Lynch family, Dusty and Jennifer, purchased Nos from Justin and Jordan Briggs in December of his fifth year. The Briggs had pur-chased the gelding, by Valiant Hero out of NFR qualifier Shebe Firin For Cash, by Cash Not Credit, from Jud Little’s production sale. Nos was the first big-time young horse that Lynch got to ride after her superstar youth horse Jackie Joe Wells, so the transition was a bit challenging. While things started off well, Nos started running up the fence at the first barrel. He was switched to the left barrel first under Jordon Brigg’s guidance and the gelding has won for both Lynch girls ever since. In the spring of 2018, Nos tied up and colicked. Lynch started riding JJJ Bonnie Rae. When Nos was ready to return to competi-tion in the fall, her young sister took him over. Although Lynch had ridden him off and on since then, The Patriot was the first time in a while that she got back on him. “I just want to thank all my sponsors, Justin and Jordon Briggs, my parents for everything,” she said, “and of course, God.”

The week between The American SemiFinals and Finals was filled with the events of The Patriot. With 5 arenas going on all week with activities at the Will Rogers Memorial Complex in Ft Worth, TX; many people left with big checks but one of the biggest of the week was Signofaluckysaint & Kaily Richardson winning The Patriot Open Barrel Race. When it was all over, Richardson left Ft Worth with $11,551. So we caught up with her to ask a few ques-tions about her big win!

BRR: Can you walk us through your runs at the Patriot?Richardson: My first run was super smooth and I was a 15.6; I got a little past the 3rd. I was really happy with it because it had been a while since we had made a run. My second round I was a 15.4 and it got us qualified back. She was in the wrong lead to first and the ground kinda got her and on the backside of second my reins flipped over her nose so it was awkward; beautiful 3rd. In the short round I set her up better in the alley and caught her right lead to the first. Had a great first; had a super fast second. Just smooth and in and out. She slipped on the 3rd but she recovered!

BRR: What makes Signofaluckysaint so special and makes her clock such fast times?Richardson: Saint wants to win. She just has a determination about her. She is ridiculously fast to start out with and her turns are just so quick. When she is smooth she can just shut off the clock.

BRR: Tell us about little about Signofaluckysaint and what are some of her big wins in his lifetime so far? Richardson: Saint was raised by Sandra. She spent some time on the racetrack before she transitioned to the barrels. Sandra started her and then sent her to Sissy Mathis who got her solid and ready to enter. Sandra asked me to run her in the 5 year old futurities. We had some luck and then we took her to a few pro- rodeos. She placed consistently but then got hurt when she was 6. It was a “career ending” injury. We did all we could for her. Bred her and just gave her the time she needed. We weren’t sure when we got the ok to exercise if we were going to even get to run her. But so far she has been great. We try to take her to quality races with better payouts because we don’t know. No one does really. But since she has been back we have taken her to two major races. The American (qualifier) at glen rose (messed up her 1st in the qualifier) got second the next day. And the Patriot. So to date this has been her biggest win.

BRR: How do you typically prepare for your runs on for yourself & your horse both? Richardson: I have a routine; I saddle about 1.5 hours before and let her sit. I get on about 30 min before my run. I walk for about 5-10 minutes then lightly trot until about 10 before me. Get off tighten up and then just let her sit quietly or walk before it’s my turn. And then I try not to fall off!

BRR: Can you tell us a little about the experience of running at the Patriot & what it was like to have one run for that big of a check? Richardson: The Patriot was great. Ran great- good ground. The gate man Carl Hardin was fantastic and encouraging. And the money is great. Barrel racing really hasn’t figuered out the payout like the team roping so to go to a jackpot for big money is awesome. Especially when you have a horse that you need to save.

BRR: What are your plans for the rest of the year for yourself & your horse? Richardson: Sandra and I talk about where we want to go, it mostly revolves around what there is to do while at the barrel race. But we will pick an American qualifier, we plan on going to the BBR Finals, and our goal is to get qualified for the WCRA rodeos. We kinda just roll with it so that’s all we have for now.

I’m not sure which is the most asked question for Christians. Is it “What is my ministry?” or “Why do bad things happen to good people?” The first one is easy. 2 Cor. 5:18 tells us, “Now all things are of God,

who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given US the ministry of reconciliation...” Your ministry, should you choose to accept it, is reconciliation. Being a peace maker. Telling others about Jesus. The second one is a bit harder. Why? Because for most of us, we are constantly looking for ways to keep eating what WE want to eat, going where WE want to go, saying what WE want to say, thinking what WE want to think, watching what WE want to watch, hearing what WE want to hear, liking what WE want to like, and hating what WE want to hate...and asking God to bless it. Friends, if Jesus is our Lord, He is the boss, and a VERY GOOD boss. He calls

the shots, we don’t. If we are constantly leading the way, there will be times when we go the wrong way and we can get in the wrong spot. That can bring failure. But thank God, if we ask, He will step right up front and get us out of the mess! This week, let’s get behind what God says in His Word. Then the question will be, “Why am I soooo blessed?” LOL!
