BRIEFLY‘Bloody good’response
Te Awamutu VolunteerFirefighters were overwhelmedwith the response to theirLeukaemia and Blood Found-ation appeal when they took tothe streets earlier this month.
In conjunction with thisyear’s Firefighter Sky TowerChallenge in May, whichincludes 10 Te Awamutufirefighters, the brigade ran thestreets of the town going door-to-door for donations for thisworthy cause.
Chief Fire Officer IanCampbell says Te Awamuturesponded with suchgenerosity that the brigadecollected over $4000 to add tothe cause in May.
He thanks the townspeoplefor such a fantastic response.

future shape of the district isinvited to attend the ‘ShapingWaipa’ open day next Monday inthe Council Chambers in BankStreet.

Driving Earth Hour message
TC190307CA01WAIPA Mayor Alan Livingston meets Earth Hour project director Dairne Poole during her nationwide tourin the Toyota Prius. People supporting the event next weekend have a chance to win the car.
BY CATHY ASPLIN
Switch power off for chance to win carDairne Poole is urging Te Awa-
mutu residents to do their bit for theenvironment by turning off theirpower for just an hour (8.30pm-9.30pm) on March 28.
WWF NZ climate change mana-ger and project director for EarthHour 2009, Ms Poole would like to seeas many people get involved in thecampaign as possible.
Last year, Christchurch was theonly city in New Zealand which tookpart in the event.
‘‘It was estimated from photo-graphs that about 70 per cent ofChristchurch households joined into some extent and power consump-tion dropped by about 13 per cent. Ifwe get that level of support acrossthe country this year it will begreat,’’ she says.
This year around 40 towns andcities have signed up.
‘‘Earth Hour is not obligatory. But it is an opportunity for people tomake a positive gesture and, hope-fully, spend a little while thinkingabout their energy footprint andclimate change issues. Perhaps theywill even decide to make some longterm changes to their lifestyle.’’
The primary goal is to turn outlights for an hour. But Ms Poole saysthere is scope for people to do muchmore by completely switching offother equipment and appliancesnormally left on stand-by.
She suggests people might like toenjoy a candle-lit dinner during theblackout — hopefully cooked on abarbecue.
‘‘The real success will be if peopledecide to make long term changes totheir lifestyle, rather than just forthe hour in question,’’ she says.
‘‘The thing about Earth Hour isthat it doesn’t cost people anything. It is simple to take part. It hasenvironmental, economic and socialbenefits, it helps them save money, and it can be on-going.’’
The campaign will also targetbusinesses — encouraging them toturn off unnecessary lighting, illuminated signage and electronicequipment at nights and weekends.
Waipa District Council is backingthe Earth Hour initiative.
As part of a nationwide tour, MsPoole was in Te Awamutu last weekto meet WDC Mayor AlanLivingston, policy analyst AnneGregan, some local residents andseveral Enviroschool pupils.
She says the number of people
who were committed to taking partthis year is inspiring.
‘‘The visit to Te Awamutu lastweek highlights the huge increase inawareness and support for this pro-ject nationwide. It is great to see ithappening at all levels, and can’thelp but achieve change.’’
Ms Poole is also delighted withthe national response.
‘‘From the councils I have beentalking to, it feels like a groundswellof enthusiasm is building across the
country. Earth Hour is a communityevent and we are urging all NewZealanders to join in and turn offlights and unnecessary appliancesfor just one hour.’’
She hopes more than a billionpeople will take part in the eventworldwide, making it the world’slargest ever environmental event.
As the clock ticks down to EarthHour, one lucky Kiwi could win anew Toyota Prius.
A $46,490 black Prius, with the
Earth Hour logo, will be won in adraw from those who enter atwww.earthhour.org/newzealand.By entering, participants will alsosign up to Earth Hour.
The competition closes at 8.30pmon Saturday, March 28 and thewinner will be announced on TV3,the following week.
Ms Poole says WWF is thrilled tohave the support of Toyota NewZealand for the promotion of EarthHour.

Te Awamutu Police are on the huntfor a fraudster who gets his victims toreveal PIN numbers over the phone bypretending to be a bank employee.
Last month he stole a wallet from avehicle left in an unlocked car in BankStreet.
Almost immediately the victimreceived a phone call from a maleclaiming to work at ANZ Bank inHamilton claiming someone had beentrying to use her cards and that theyhad been retained by the ATM.
He said that they would be returnedto the Te Awamutu branch the follow-ing day.

The victim believes her wallet wasstolen while she was at NZPost.
Two days later she received aphone call from a male claiming to befrom the bank.

Return of itemsshows TA spirit
Last week an item left by a courier in ourletterbox was removed, opened then along with thecontents left dumped in bushes down the road bypersons unknown.
The consequences of this mindless action need-less to say caused considerable stress to my partner, the business that sent it and the sports teamawaiting the items in time for their first game of theseason.
That the courier concerned did not follow thedelivery instructions clearly stated on the packageadded to our drama.
Four days after the event two lovely ladiesturned up at our doorstep with the missing packageand items. So relieved was my partner to have thisback she neglected to ask their names enabling aproper thankyou befitting the effort these ladies putinto finding and returning the lost package anditems to her.
To the ladies concerned, please accept a heartfeltthankyou, the community spirit demonstrated byyou is what makes Te Awamutu such a great placeto live despite the actions of a few.

Cook’s crew memberhooked 50lb snapper!
Regarding the very noteworthy massive snappercaught recently at Kawhia.
I thought that this might be interesting to fishos.I had read a logbook of Captain Cook’s years whenhe was exploring the country in 1769. He said themen went fishing in the afternoon and one of thesnapper caught was 50lb in weight!
Would this then be the largest recorded snapperever caught in our waters? I suppose in those days itcould have been as they say they never stopgrowing.
However, I concur that 1769-2009 is a long time towait between big fish — well done.

Wine drinker gets case of blues
TC190309CA02RYBURN Road resident Lynette Sellars reads the recycling sticker placed on herrejected bottle.
BY CATHY ASPLIN
Lynette Sellars recently found a wineshe really enjoys — a Banrock Stationwhite shiraz.
She felt it was good value for money, had a lovely flavour and the labels on thebottle outlined the Australian company’sefforts with global conservation.
One of the labels on the bottle neckbacked this up with the slogan ‘Help ushelp the Earth’.
When she had finished drinking thewine she put the empty bottle into arecycling bin at her gate.
But, to her surprise when she picked upthe bin after the collection had been done, the Banrock Station bottle was still there -with a yellow sticker attached.
‘‘The sticker had a note saying that bluebottles couldn’t be recycled as they were ahealth hazard.
‘‘While I agree the bottle has a bluetinge, it’s essentially clear glass. It’s cer-tainly not like the dark blue wine bottlesyou used to get many years ago.’’
So she emailed the distributors ofBanrock Station — Constellation NewZealand (formerly Nobilo Wine Company)— with her concerns that the bottlesshould be recyclable to fit with theirenvironmental image.
Before long a representative called tocollect the bottle so she could speak to glassrecyclers and gave Mrs Sellars a replace-ment bottle of wine.
Brands manager Debbie Latoa informedher that they had been talking with NewZealand glass recycling company ‘O-I NZ’which said they were happy to take the‘arctic blue’ glass and that they wouldendeavour to change the policy ofrecycling contractor ‘Street Smart’.
The replacement bottle of wine was alsoin arctic blue glass, so Lynette again putthe bottle out for recycling when she hadfinished with it — and again it was rejectedby the recyclers.
Not to be deterred, Mrs Sellars headedfor Waipa District Council with her bottlein hand to ask for an explanation.
‘‘They told me it should be recyclable, but it’s not being collected, so it willprobably just end up in my rubbish.
‘‘I’m sure there must be other peoplewho have this problem. I believe gin bottlesthat have any sort of coloured tinge arealso rejected.’’
(Waipa District Council was contactedfor comment regarding this issue, but nonewas available at the time of going to press.)
John Webber, Glass Packaging ForumGeneral Manager says there is an unprece-dented demand for good quality glass.
‘‘New Zealand’s only glass manufac-turer O-I NZ is looking to increase itsvolume of recovered glass by 70,000 tonneswith a $83 million investment in a new

Woolhandlers gather morecompetition success
TC190309SP16CATHERINE CHRISTEY (right) and Keryn Herbert with their haul ofwoolhandling ribbons from the Golden Shears.
BY GRANT JOHNSTON
PETE NIKOLAISON PHOTOWOOL—POWER: Catherine Christey in action at Masterton. More photos at www.pete.co.nz.
Te Awamutuwoolhandling starsKeryn Herbert andCatherine Christey havebeen to the fore again inrecent competitions.
Christey achieved thepinnacle of her relativelyshort woolhandling com-petition career to datewhen she took out topplace in the junior cir-cuit final for the NorthIsland at the GoldenShears competition inMasterton two weekendsago.
In her winning speechshe thanked KerynHerbert for mentoringher towards show suc-cess.
Herbert described herprotege’s performance as‘‘more organised andswitched on than herrivals’’, while DougLaing publicity officer,Shearing Sports NewZealand, describedChristey’s winning styleas ‘‘graceful’’.
She went into theGolden Shears competi-tion with high hopes andrated one of the topchances, but says shewas too hyped and‘‘choked’’ , finishingfourth with a score thatwas disappointing by herstandards.
Christey started workas a woolhandler in thisarea with Herbert andthe latter’s father. Afterencouragement fromHerbert she entered herfirst show three yearsago at Raglan, beingunplaced but going on toachieve second placingat Te Kuiti as well assixth in novice shearing.
But a penelbeatingpre-apprenticeshipcourse at Fairview Fordin Hamilton took her outof the sheds and she hasnot been backwoolhandling since, apart from competitions.
Victory in the juniorsection at the WesternShears at Raglan earlierthis year showed she hadlost none of her skillalong with top fiveplacings at a host ofother events.
Her aim is to move to
the senior ranks then onto the open section.
Being a solo mumwith two young daugh-ters, Storm (8) andJubilee (7), has ruled outworking the sheds butChristey’s ability to com-pete successfully is aninspiration to others.
Keryn Herbert againteamed up with JoelHenare of Gisbornerecently to repeat theirsuccess over their Aus-tralian counterparts in awoolhandling test.
The trans-Tasmantest was part of theGolden Shears event atMasterton and certainlyentertained the largecrowd.
Henare and Herbertworked hard, finishingbehind AustraliansRachel Hutchison andAngela Wakely in time, but winning on totalpoints.
The Australiansgained a quick lead ontheir preferred breed, the merino, with a lovelyfirst throw fromHutchison on the table.
The Kiwis were soona fleece behind the Aus-tralians as the shearers
swung into the bellyblows on the second pairof merinos in the fourmerino, four crossbredsheep contest.
The Kiwis workedhard to catch up on thecrossbreeds but the Aus-tralians finished first.
Henare said the Kiwishad sacrificed time forquality.
‘‘We like to make surewe do a good job for thefarmer and put themoney in his pocket. Butlike the Aussie’s say, gohard or go home,’’ hesaid.
Quality did count. The Kiwi took home thevictory sashes with just30 points between themand the Australians, aclose margin inwoolhandling events.
Herbert says she wasdisappointed in herselffor not making theGolden Shears final inthe woolhandling opensection, after qualifyingthird in the heats.
‘‘In the quarter finalsI failed to find a majorprocessing fault in myfleece and that ended myGolden Shears for 2009.’’
Herbert qualified top
into the North Islandcircuit final and finishedthird overall.
She was a member ofthe King Country/Wai-kato YFC combinationwhich won the team’ssection, along withshearers Peter Jackson(Te Kuiti) and MarkGrainger (Te Kuiti) andfellow woolhandlerAnita Phillips (Tau-marunui).
She says she andChristey were proud torepresent Te Awamutuwell — collectivelyclaiming three winningribbons, a third and afourth is a result muchlarger centres would berapt with.
There are two showsleft for the woolhandlingseason — Taranaki atStratford on March 29March and New ZealandShearing Champion-ships at Te Kuiti on April2,3,4.
Both shows willinvolve handling secondshear wool which is whatthe Te Awamutu pair aremost confident with. TeKuiti will also host thesecond test of the North vSouth teams event.

CAB: we’re always here to help
TC190309CA05CAB volunteers (from left in caravan) Elaine Fox, Jenny Hall, Rod Bent and Ra Potaka enjoy the antics of Pam Howells (standingwith sign) as she promotes the Te Awamutu Citizens Advice Bureau.
BY CATHY ASPLIN
Te Awamutu CitizensAdvice Bureau hoped toraise its profile locallyfor the recent nationalawareness week.
Volunteer PamHowells certainly didher bit - wearing a wig, ahat with balloons anddressing in yellow andblack (including astriped waistcoatemblazoned with CAB onthe back).
Office managerElaine Fox says being
visible on the street andvisiting local educa-tional institutes such asTe Awamutu College andTe Wananga o Aotearoahas certainly helpedraise awareness of wherethey are and what theydo.
‘‘Many people stilldon’t know that we’rebased in the UnitedArcade, they often lookfor us in Bank Street.
‘‘For the nationalawareness week we putyellow stickers on thearcade floor to lead the
way to the CAB officeand we had the caravanoutside the arcade onWednesday.
‘‘Once people foundout where the CAB wasand what sorts of thingswe could help with theywere keen to use ourservices. Several peoplepopped in to see us dur-ing the week and othersrang - 871 4111 or thefreephone 0800 FOR CAB- for assistance.
‘‘While we don’t haveall the answers for every-thing and can’t make
decisions for people, wecan certainly point themin the right direction.’’
A data base with over4000 categories providesa starting point for manyenquiries.
Volunteer Rod Bentsays many people don’thave access to computersso often can’t findinformation they need.
‘‘We can certainlysearch for them and thenprovide relevantinformation. The systemis linked to indicate suit-able pamphlets we have
in the office as well.‘‘We are also fortu-
nate that local legalfirms support us withfree services on a regularbasis - legal advice isalways in demand.’’
Demand for budget-ing services is also on therise due to the economicclimate, with mostreferred to Kainga Aroha(which ironically oper-ates from the BankStreet building that usedto house the CAB.)

Te Pahu woman battles backto join fight against poverty
TC190309SP17ANNETTA TEGEL is still going strong after over eight hours of a 10hour walk in the hills west of Te Pahu and Karamu as she makes herway along Old Mountain Road.
BY TUI ALLEN
You may remember about ayear ago reading about AnnettaTegel heroically dragging herselfdown from Pirongia Mountainwith a serious injury.
She broke her leg on theextreme terrain of the uppermountain shortly after startingthe descent from the summit, called her husband from themountain by cellphone, and thendragged herself most of the waydown by sliding the downhills onher rear and using a stick in placeof the injured leg on the uphillsections, while she waited for hisarrival.
He arrived with two friendswho carried her over the remain-ing ‘non-slidable’ sections. Theygot out of the bush just as dark-ness fell, thereby avoiding theneed to call in Search and Rescue.
A year on and this indefati-gable woman is well enoughhealed to have reached the maxi-mum training phase of herpreparation for the Oxfam 100kmTrailwalker coming up nextmonth in Taupo.
‘‘During the first few trainingsessions, I could feel some pain inthe leg which I broke, but aftercontinued training the pain fadedas the leg strengthened,’’ MrsTegel says.
She is participating in theOxfam event in a four womanteam, where at least three of thefour team members must com-plete the whole 100km distancewithin 36 hours. These womenexpect to cover the course in atime between 16 and 24 hours.Their team is also required toraise a minimum of $2000 throughsponsorship. This money is usedby Oxfam to fight world poverty.
Her longest walk so far in her
Oxfam build-up has been a 12hour walk over Pirongia, via thesummit, with her husband Klaas, when they missed their turn-off inthe bush and had to be collectedby friends since they exited themountain at a different place fromwhere they had left their car.
But she still insists that themost gruelling of all her trainingsessions so far was a more recentone in the Old Mountain Roadarea of Karamu when she had tocontend with some terrible Febru-
ary heat. She had done a lot of bike
training before commencing thewalk/run training for the Oxfamevent and had completed thenotoriously hilly 200km K2 race inthe Coromandel in Novemberwinning her age-group.
If you wish to contribute toAnnetta Tegel’s team you can goon to the Oxfam NZ site atwww.oxfamtrailwalker.org.nzand type ‘Tegel’ into the ‘Find aWalker’ field.

Marist after silverware
CFPSOME of the 140 (including two bus loads) of colourful Maristsupporters cheer their team on in the final against Te Akau atWaikato Stadium last year.
Te Awamutu Marist are hoping togo one better than last season’smemorable feat of finishing runners-up in Waikato second division rugbychampionship.
‘‘We have a bit to live up to thisyear but we’re up for it,’’ says teammanager, Carl Henderson.
Murray Gane Plumbing sponsoredTe Awamutu Marist went into lastyear’s final against Te Akau with a 13win, one draw record — having beatenTe Akau 13-10 at Te Akau earlier inthe season.
These two teams went hammerand tong in an 80 minute arm wrestlebefitting a club final on WaikatoStadium.
It was a great advertisement forgrassroots rugby.
The scoreless deadlock was notbroken until the 69th minute when TeAkau’s halfback nailed a penalty fromout in front after missing three earlierattempts.
Te Akau clinched their 8-0 victorywith a controversial try six minutesfrom fulltime — when the try scorerappeared to drop the ball cold.
The urgency and hunger of theteams, coupled with the closeness ofthe score, kept both sets of supporterson tenter-hooks.
For last year’s Te Awamutu Maristcaptain Darren Marsom, running outonto Waikato Stadium was a dreamcome true.
Sadly, Marsom (37) has finallypulled the plug on a stellar club careerwith Marist, donning the senior jerseyfor most of the last 18 seasons, to takeup boxing . He has played rugby sincehe was five years old, having briefstints with Te Awamutu Old Boys andTe Awamutu Sports.
‘‘I’ve probably never been fitterthan right now, so you never know theMarist presidents grade side mighttwist my arm to play for them,’’ hequipped.
Henderson says the fact that num-bers at training are just starting to pickup now is largely due to the second
division season not starting foranother five weeks. A lot of the teamhave been involved in summer activi-ties.
‘‘We expect to have most of theteam back from last year with a fewnotable exceptions. Dion Pryor isoverseas, Darren Marsom is boxingand both Jody Potroz and MarkCoates are unavailable.
‘‘But we have picked up 10 newplayers to fill some of the holes.’’
Standout players returning fromlast year include livewire flanker JasonRowe, dependable first five Marty
Rogers, nuggety halfback BryceMcCandlish, fleet-footed second fiveCory Ohutu and No. 8 VaughanPalmer, who made New Zealand Coltslast year.
Marist again entered the six teampre-season tournament, hosted thisyear by Raglan, beating Ohaupo andlosing to Melville and Pirongia nar-rowly.
For anyone wanting to play forMarist seniors (sponsored by MurrayGane Plumbing and Woolies Bar andGrill) or presidents grade, trainingstarts 6.30pm Tuesday and Thursday.
Pevreal key for OhaupoThe return of inspirational back rower Brent Pevreal is
a godsend for the Ohaupo senior rugby team in thisyear’s Waikato division one competition.
Pevreal is a hard-nosed, uncompromising forwardwho led Te Awamutu Sports to Waikato U85kgchampionship glory on Waikato Stadium No.2 ground in2004.
Ohaupo coach Des Tyler, assisted by Rod Fisher, hashad a squad of 22 in training since late January.
New faces are Tauita and Opetaia Davidson, JohnLakua and Sam Talaiti.
Ohaupo kick start their Waikato division one cam-paign on March 28 with an away game against Te Rapa, followed by Hinuera in round two.
‘‘It promises to be an interesting first couple ofweeks,’’ says club spokesperson, Peter Bloodworth.
‘‘The second annual grassroots tournament at Raglanproved to be a good blow out for our seniors.
‘‘It also showed there is plenty for the coaches to workon.’’
Bloodworth hopes the Senior Bs hit form early, unlikelast season when they left their run too late.

Mountain Men rebuilding
TC190309CT01STRONG running Pirongia back Richard Parsons will again causeheadaches for the opposition in this year’s Waikato division onecompetition.
New Pirongia senior rugby coachFord Demler expects the 2009season to be a rebuilding year.
‘‘A couple of the ‘old stalwarts’ ofthe team are stepping back to letsome young blood through and acouple of the rising stars havereceived overseas contracts.’’
Demler has been pleased andexcited about the pre-season trainingand form to date.
Playing in the grassroots tourna-ment at Raglan, the Mountain Mencame away with three wins from threegames
Demler was rapt with the skillshown by the team.
Last year’s backline stars, PaulTaylor, Pita Taukiri and RichardParsons are back to form the basis ofan exciting backline. Throw in newrecruits Dan O’Connor and TeArakau Houston and there is plenty oftalent to have the home crowdsbuzzing.
Young prop Ben Coutts looks tohave secured the vacant tightheadspot and, in combination with JPPeterson and John Burnside, willform a strong front row.
Young Lee Bennett and new-comer Dave McGregor will give thetight five a strong presence on thefield, allowing workaholic DerekEveraarts the opportunity to roamfree in the loose this year.
Another young new-comer, RanaKapene-Paitai will add power to thebase of the scrum, complimenting afine loose forward trio with veteranDoug Chappell returning to theopenside.
Coach Demler is delighted withthe way his team is beginning to takeshape.
Pirongia were fortunate to haveWaikato coaches Scott McLeod andChris Gibbes help out with a couple oftrainings. Chances are they will beback to help out with a couple of moretechnical trainings later in theseason.
Kelvin Bell and Micheal Earwakerare again building a strong under-19squad, with over 20 players turningup to training.
The Pirongia Under-19 team are
keen to build on their top four finish inthe championship last year.
The coaches believe the training
academy that ran over summer mayhave given them a slight edge overthe opposition for the season.

Unfortunately the team couldn’t emulate theirwonderful performance against Auckland midweek, losing to them 12-9 in the final.
It was the first time Waikato Harlequins havecompeted in any official capacity in a competitivetournament.
