The Olde Main Building at Simpson House, constructed during1898–99, has been home to many generations of senior adults
during its history. Its site overlooking the western edge ofFairmount Park is among the most picturesque of any retirementcommunities in the Delaware Valley. Over the years the Bennett,Carson, Flanagan and Barnes buildings were added and periodicupgrades and renovations have been completed.
Several years ago the Simpson Senior Services Board began diligentlyplanning for the long-term future of Simpson House. The result ofthat work is a multi-phase master plan which has been approved andwill soon be underway. Phase one will be initiated in early Septemberand includes renovations to twelve apartments in the Olde Mainbuilding. When completed they will have redesigned floor plans, newheating and air conditioning and updated amenities. A new marketingsuite, complete with a private entrance and dedicated parking, willalso be built on the ground floor of the west wing.
A new independent living residence, “The Cornerstone” at SimpsonHouse, is planned to be built on the southwest portion of the campus.Pre-marketing informational sessions for this expansion will begin inthe fall and continue throughout 2014. We hope to celebrate groundbreaking in early 2015. What a wonderful milestone it will be to beginconstruction on the newest building as we begin celebrating ourSesquicentennial! We look forward to keeping you updated on ourprogress. These phases are just the beginning of preparing SimpsonHouse to serve generations of seniors for years to come.

How Does YourGarden Grow?
Thanks to enthusiastic and energetic volunteers from PECO Energy and Evercare, thegardens at Simpson Mid-Town and Simpson House lookgreat this summer! Volunteers from PECO Energy along with residents prepared
garden beds at Simpson Mid-Town so that residents would have convenient plots to grow
their favorite vegetables and flowers. A volunteer team from Evercare spent a day at
Simpson House cleaning beds, preparing soil and planting dozens of flowers which continue
to bloom in many colors throughout the campus.Thanks PECO and Evercarefor sharing your time, talent and energy with us!See more photos on the inside back cover.

So, you have finally decided tostreamline, downsize or move.You look around and realizeevery shelf, closet, cupboard,nook and cranny is full of whoknows what. If you have lived in your home for more than ashort time, a thousand mile
walk might seem less dauntingthan sorting, selecting, packingand divesting of your accumu-lated treasures. How do youtake that first step?
Acquiring your possessions has been a gradual process —organizing it is another processto work through. Once youhave made the decision andcommitment to yourself to prioritize and organize, you can develop and implement a successful plan. Simply put,first identify what you need,whether you are remaining inyour current home or moving;
then decide which items youwill give away to family mem-bers, friends or charities, aswell as what, if any, items canbe sold or consigned such asantiques, works of art, furniture,household items, power tools,lawn equipment, etc.
If you are struggling with whereto begin, you can select andwork with a professional MoveManager who has the experi-ence and objectivity to helpyou analyze, make decisionsand implement your plan.Researching companies isimportant. You will want to besure to talk with friends orassociates to get referrals andrecommendations, interviewthe principals and people whowill be working directly withyou, check references, and besure to understand each of the available services, optionsand pricing.
Margit Novack, President andFounder of Moving Solutionsheadquartered in GreaterPhiladelphia, recommendsadopting her “Twelve Months of Moving” technique to helpget organized. “Each monthconcentrate on sorting and
organizing one category such as: January—shoes; February—purses; March—tools; April—pots and pans; May—coats, hats, gloves; June—gift wrap,boxes, cards; July—food items;August—table linens; September—towels, blankets, linens; October—baking supplies; November—alcoholic beverages; and inDecember—bric-a-brac.” Visit the Moving Solutions website athttp://www.movingsolutions.com/downsizing-tips/ for more suggestions, ideas and recom-mendations including donatingitems friends and family don’tneed or can’t accommodate.
“Acquiring your possessions has been a gradual process —organizing it is another process to work through. ”
You have probably heard and perhaps even pondered the wisdomof Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu, “The journey of a thousand milesbegins with a single step.”
