SEPTEMBER DAY GROUP REPORT
The attendance for our September meeting was very low with only 14 members
attending. I am sure this was only because of the Royal Show being on and the
inclement weather we have had lately. After welcoming my members, I gave
out several apologies and then welcomed two visitors who arrived just after I
started the meeting these being my dear orchid friends, Don and Barbara James
who I had not seen for many years since they moved to Queensland. It was
lovely to see them.
I then gave out information on our upcoming Spring Show here at the
Community Centre on the 23rd and 24th September and our Sarc. Dinner on
Saturday 4th November. I advised that bookings must be made by our next
meeting and also that payment be made then. Cost is $25.00 per head for a 3-
course meal. This will be a ‘Trivia Night’ which should be very entertaining.
I then welcomed our Guest Speaker Iain Kilpatrick who gave us an excellent
account of his long-time enjoyment with orchids which he named ‘Orchids
Down Memory Lane’. Some of the beautiful images of these orchids certainly
brought back a lot of memories of some of the most beautiful orchids that we do
not see around anymore. Some of Iain’s images included spectacular
Sarcochilus orchids together with some of the many interstate nurseries he and
Ros visited on some of their well-travelled holidays. Iain thank you so much we
thoroughly enjoyed your presentation.
Our ‘Lucky Member’ draw was won by Karl Haavisto. We only had a few
orchids presented on the day but they represented several different genera and
were very interesting. David gave us an excellent commentary on the plants with
a special mention of one very large specimen Australian Native which was very
stunning with so many flowers it was impossible to count them. This plant was
unnamed but we were pretty sure it was Den. gracilicaule. I must say a big
thank you to Enid Brown for bringing this plant in for all to enjoy.
After drawing the large raffle, I advised that Coralie Hills with her topic about
the AOC is the speaker for the October night Meeting and Richard Fishlock will
be our ‘Guest Speaker at the next Day Group Meeting with a presentation on the
wonderful genus Phalaenopsis.
I closed the meeting offering a nice hot cuppa and a closer viewing of the
orchids.

OCTOBER DAY GROUP SPEAKER
Our next meeting will be held at the Enfield Community Centre, 540 Regency
Road, Enfield on Friday October 13th from 2.00 to 4.00 pm. Our Guest Speaker
will be Richard Fishlock with a presentation of the wonderful genus
Phalaenopsis. Richard has been growing and showing some very spectacular
Phallies for many years and I am sure he will pass on some very interesting
information on the culture of these wonderful orchids.
Pat Harmer – Day Group Co-ordinator
OCTOBER NIGHT GROUP SPEAKER
The Guest Speaker for the 5th October Meeting will be Coralie Hills who is a
Life Member of OCSA and has held many positions in volunteering over the
years. She is a Friend of the Australian Orchid Council and Editor of the
publication Orchids Australia. She has attended many national and international
orchid Conferences and has established a wide network of orchid contacts.
Coralie will share her historical perspective on the Australian Orchid Council
formed during the golden years of OCSA. It will be an interesting and insightful
presentation on how things have changed in orchid growing and showing in
Australia.

SPECIAL SARC. NIGHT DINNER
4th November
Enfield Community Centre
540 Regency Road
Enfield
Members, just a reminder, the Sarc dinner is not that
far away. This is a great social night for the club so please set aside Saturday the
4th of November for a night of mixing socially with other members. I would
especially recommend this to you the new members in the club; you are most
welcome and you are also welcome to bring along your partners or a friend.
OSCA 8 October 2017
This evening is set aside to enjoy the dainty Australian orchid Sarcochilus,
which normally doesn’t flower until a month after our Spring Show so if you
have any of these flowering at this time, please bring them along. There are two
separate prizes, the judge’s choice and the popular vote by the members. Put-in
time is from 4:30pm to 6:00pm with judging commencing at 6:00pm.
This year’s meal will be Italian that includes an entrée, main course and sweets
costing $25:00 per head.
It would be appreciated if you could please consider donating something for the
raffle table; in past years, there has been MANY prizes to win.
Please consider and see The Treasurer at the October meeting to book your
place. Payment is preferable at the October meeting but not essential; we need
to notify the caterer by mid-October how many will be attending. For those who
are unable to make this meeting or the October Day Group meeting please either
email me or ring me; my details are on page 3 of the magazine.

Royal Show Orchid Competition 2017
The thrill of the Adelaide Royal Show held annually during the first 10 days of
September is magical in that it fulfills all desires and cravings for the
extravagances of weird and wonderful experiences. The Orchid Competition
held in the Goyder Pavilion was a spectacular of Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis
blooms in full glory of Spring flowering. It was a late season and not many
Dendrobiums were opening but the Champions were there awaiting the judges.
Grand Champion and Champion Standard Cymbidium was Cym. Marilyn
Thomas, with two spikes of ten bright gold flowers with contrasting red
markings on the lips. The growers, The Three Amigos, also scooped the
Champion Intermediate Cym. with Cym. (Glory Days x Sleeping Dawn)
‘Royale’, a tall elegant pale yellow green white lipped with orange contrast
flowering spike, and Champion Miniature Cym. with Cym. (Delores x Tom
Thumb), a cascading profusion of green and maroon lipped blooms as well as
Champion Cut Flower with Cym. Warringa Winter. They were awarded a
Certificate of Excellence by the RA&HS.
OSCA 9 October 2017
Winning the RA&HS Outstanding Achievement Award, Michael Willoughby
and Oui Ju grew the Champion Australian Native, Dendrobium Hewitt Glow
which was a mass of over 65 spikes of yellow cream flowers with red markings
on the lips. They also won Champion Paphiopedilum with a single large flower
of Paph. insigne 'Harefield Hall'. Their Champion Oncidinae was Hwra. Lava
Burst 'Pacific Sunrise' a dainty cascading raceme of orange blooms. Their
Champion Seedling, Den. [(Blushart x Rutherford Sunspot) x Tyabb] 'Rosy
Cheeks' thirty yellow star flowers edged with magenta, was very attractive.
Champion Laeliinae was Cattleya Aloha Case 'Ching Hua', two brilliant
magenta flowers grown by Graeme and Maureen Hazledine. The Group Display
winners were Gordon and Coralie Hime who also won Champion Zygopetalum
with Z. Kiwi Choice 'Highclere', a single spike of four flowers beautifully green
and brown, purple and spotty.
Champion Other Genera, Coelogyne Intermedia, cascading cream and yellow
lipped fragrant blooms was grown by Edda Viskic. Champion Novice Orchid
was won by Hilary Leisavnieks for a single bloom of Paph. Pop Monkhouse.
The RA&HS Certificate of Merit was awarded to Kildare College which also
won Champion School Orchid with Diuris Pioneer, a yellow and maroon native
terrestrial hybrid.
Best Orchid Display was won by Willunga High School with a clever snake in
the school library themed floral story. Many rewarding experiences were given
to the students in the Orchids in Schools Program mentored by The Orchid Club
of South Australia, during the Show by daily hands on potting demonstration
sessions on stage before a public audience. These confidence boosting times
were greatly appreciated by the parents and friends of Woodville High, Valley
View Secondary School, Kildare College, Willunga Primary and Willunga High
Schools.
The general public visiting the Orchid Displays during the duration of the Show
were very positive in their comments and took many selfies among the joyous
beauty of the flowers.

FROM THE REGISTRAR FOR SEPTEMBER
Plant of Open Division and Plant of the Night
Judge Les Nesbitt and his Panel choose Laelia anceps ssp. dawsonii ‘Rachel’
owned by Steve Howard as plant of the Division and it easy to see why. It was
a large showy plant with 3 racemes of white flowers on tall stems. The flowers
actually change the colour of the labellum from year to year, white lip in cold,
blue lip in warm weather. There were 4 flowers per raceme, which is optimum
for the plant, and Sub species dawsonii comes from the Pacific side of Mexico,
and flowers later than the purple forms of the species.
Steve informs us that he grows this species orchid cool, hanging under 50%
shade cloth. It receives frequent watering in the summer, reducing to natural
rainfall in winter. He uses a mixture of Orchid Excellence fertilizer and Got the
Lot all year round. It is growing in medium bark (9/12mm). The plant has a
high flower count for the species, and he comments that the labellum colour
change seems to happen Australia wide. Another terrific plant from Steve’s
collection. Well grown and well-done Steve.
Plant of First Division Dendrobium
cuthbertsonii was chosen by the Panel led by
Graham Zerbe, and he mentions that there were
only 6 plants on the bench. The Dendrobium
seemed to be more flowers than actual plant. It
was first discovered in 1888, has received 211
awards, and can be grown sympodial/ epiphyte,
lithophyte or terrestrial. Its geographical
distribution is the Bismark Archipeligo and New
Guinea, growing from 750 meters to as high as
3,500 meters. The plant will not tolerate
continued high heat, and they require much
moisture in cultivation. Congratulations to Kris Kopicki for bring bringing in
such a wonder species orchid for members to see.
OSCA 15 October 2017
Kris comments that he grows his Den. cuthbertsonii in intermediate conditions,
watering lots, using rainwater most days, except in winter. He fertilizers using
Seasol or Powerfeed, giving light food often. The plant is growing in scoria,
with moss on top. He bought the plant in a flask, and found it difficult to de-
flask, but once established, it hasn’t been too difficult to grow, just keep it out
of 40° plus weather.
Plant of Second Division
Judge John Lampard led the panel
in Second Division and they
eventually choose the plant of
Serapias Den’s Surprise owned by
Rayne Riggs. The species
originally come from Europe and
grown naturally in cool to cold
conditions. Unlike most orchids we
see on benches, this is a terrestrial
Orchid which grows in a mix that is
mostly sand (but feels like
concrete). This hybrid is dark red in
colour and quite a high percentage of flowering bulbs make a very attractive
plant. It is a primary hybrid made up of Serapias (neglecta x vomeracea)
registered in 2015 by Rayne’s father Les Burgess.
Rayne tells us the she grows this hybrid Serapias cool, getting watered all year
round and does not let it dry out. She uses Blood and Bone as fertilizer and the
plant is growing in a mix of 50% river sand and 50% potting mix. It flowers in
springtime and when flowers die down, they are not dead but have started to
form tubers. Rayne says when potting them on, put the bigger tubers in one pot
and place smaller ones into another pot.
A really well grown pot full Rayne, continue the good work.
OSCA 16 October 2017
Plant of OIS Division
James Argent was one of the judges who looked
at the plants in Schools Division and explained
that they chose Cyrtostylis robusta from the 4
plants on the bench. This tiny terrestrial species
is native to Australia, mainly in the southern
states, thriving in the heathland and Mallee
regions. There were 6 tubers in the pot, but only
one was flowering as the other tubers were not
big enough to flower. There were 6 lovely
flowers in the raceme. Well done to the students
at Kildare College.
Les Nesbitt is Mentor to the students at Kildare, and he comments that the
students grow the plant cool, watering it from Autumn to Spring. It is growing
in a mix of sand and native orchid potting mix, and it receives Blood and Bone
when being repotted. It is a local species that grows in colonies and is commonly
known as the Early gnat orchid.
It was a fairly quiet night for the judges, but thank you to those members who
bought plants in for judging. To those who put plants in the Royal Show, well
done, especially those who won rosettes or ribbons. Our next Show will be held
on weekend of 23/24th September, with judging being on Friday 22nd. I look
forward to seeing many more plants on the benches, depending on when this
cold weather finishes.
