President’s Message: HAPPY SPRING EVERYONE!!!

Calgary Evergreen Community Association

it’s beginning to look a lot like spring…..hopefully! yes, spring is just around the corner and the thoughts of green grass, budding trees, flowers and warmer weather are filling our minds. it will be a nice change from the cold and snow we’ve had this year.

the one thing that was a silver lining to the colder weather this year was our outdoor ice rink. this was a huGe success this year and the entire community and other communities came out to enjoy the ice.

Based on the success of the outdoor rink, your Board of Directors are going to be working hard to ensure we can have it again next winter and hopefully with some improvements.

we had our winter festival on 11 february and it was an amazing day filled with skating, fire pit, wagon rides, snow activities and hot chocolate. thanks to all the volunteers who helped make the event a success. Also a big thank you to our sponsors evergreen starbucks, Bridlewood sobey’s, Maria’s Alterations and MlA Dave rodney who made donations to ensure we had a successful event.

Also in february, we welcomed 2 new Board members to serve the community; a big welcome to sudip khatri and kelly Amadi. thank you for your willingness to volunteer your time, effort and ideas to make our community an amazing place to live.

this month, we are looking forward to our first coffee Meet of the year. the coffee Meet will be held at the evergreen starbucks from 10 am – 11 am. this is our opportunity to meet some of the community and hear directly from you on issues or ideas on how we can continue to advocate on your behalf. come out and meet some members of the Board who are always happy to chat with you.

lastly, i want to remind everyone that without new and renewed memberships from the community, our events and are drive to bring amenities to the community is not possible. please go online to our website membership page (www.myceca.ca/membership ) and become a member today; or if you prefer to mail in your membership form you can use the one located in the newsletter.

thanks again evergreen, if you have any ideas or concerns you’d like to send onward; feel free to email me directly at [email protected] .

Adam w frisch | president | calgary evergreen community Association

Message from the Board

welcome new Board membersin february, the cecA Board was delighted to welcome sudip khatri and kelly Amadi to our team. sudip will be taking on the secretary role, while kelly Amadi will be helping as a Director at large. we look forward to the chance to work with these two gentlemen on all our upcoming initiatives.

have you ever considered joining the cecA Board? it’s a fun group who are excited to make things happen for the community. while it may seem intimidating, members of the Board are just every day evergreen residents who want to help build a stronger community – and we are always looking for new people with new ideas! feel free to email us here at [email protected] if you want to join a meeting and learn how you can help out.

upcoming eventsDid you notice that we have a ton of new events coming up? from coffee Meets to our community clean up – there is plenty going on! we hope to see you at all these popular events.

thanks as well to all those who volunteered, donated and helped with the winter festival!

ice rinkAs the weather grows warmer, our ice rink will continue to need maintenance and volunteers. please keep an eye on our facebook page to see when the ice rink will be closed, and when we need help clearing snow and such!

have a safe and (hopefully) warm march!elise sommer, Director-at-large

on Behalf of the cecA Board of Directors.

Thank You to 37 Station of the Fire Department for flooding our rink!

spring is (finally) just around the corner and is an amazing

time to clean and declutter your home. i have found that the best way to clean a space is to remove everything from that space, wipe everything down and sort the items, then put back only the items you want to keep. when i’m sorting the items i like to make four piles:

1. keep: things i use and love and want to keep. i create subcategories so that similar things are together.

2. trash: things that cannot be donated, recycled or sold, such as broken glass.

3. recycling: old electronics, old papers, certain toys that are no longer able to be used. check for a recycling symbol on the item before decided how to recycle them.

4. sell/Donate: items that can be reused. if i don’t want them maybe someone else will.

if you DeciDe to hAVe A GArAGe sAle here Are soMe tips to help you MAke it A success.

1. if you don’t have a lot of stuff consider teaming up with friends, family or neighbours to have a larger garage sale.

this has two advantages, one many hands make lighter work, two you can choose the house with the best location to increase traffic in your garage sale.

2. try holding your garage sale during the community parade of garage sales. the community advertises for you and the increased number of garage sales attracts more shoppers.

3. Make sure items are clean and displayed nicely. retail stores have professionals who make their displays look amazing. if you need ideas on how to display things look there for inspiration.

4. keep like items together. Books in one area, clothes on a clothing rack, kitchen stuff on one table. this will help customers find things more easily.

5. have lots of tables. it’s easier to display things on a table and they help to helps things clean. if you don’t have a table to can make one by placing some plywood on two saw horses or chairs.

6. price things according to your goal and be ready to negotiate. if your goal is to get

rid of unwanted items price them inexpensively, if your goal is to make money you can price them slightly higher. if you have really expensive items you want to sell you might want to consider selling them online rather than at a garage sale.

7. Make your place easy to find. have good signs with arrows that are easy to follow. Balloons help to draw attention to your house. place shiny items, or bigger items near the front to help attract attention.

8. look for a charity to donate unsold items to. that way you won’t be tempted to bring unwanted items back into your home.

PrEvEnTinG SliPS And FAllSslips and falls can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere. falls can lead to serious injuries that can cause major disruptions in our lives. slips are due to inadequate grip between footwear and walking surfaces. the risk increases when surfaces are covered by water, mud, frost, slush, snow or ice.

falls may result in bruises, pulled or strained muscles, joint injury, fractures, head trauma or even worse.

remember to allow plenty of time to get to your destination, wear proper footwear, and watch where you are walking. keep your eyes and mind on task to prevent injury.

preventing slips:

• wear Appropriate footwear. choose proper fitting footwear that is suited to the environment. wearing non-slip soles that are in good condition is an important first step to helping you avoid injury.

• Be prepared for changing weather conditions and black-ice formation after melting occurs. this is when its most hazardous.

• Avoid carrying items. keep hands empty so arms are free to move for stabilization. use pockets and backpacks to carry items whenever possible.

• keep sidewalks, driveways, walking paths and stairs free of ice and snow. Assist neighbours that need an extra helping hand.

preventing fAlls:

• keep 3 point of contact when getting in and out of vehicles, going up or down a ladder or using stairs. keep both hands free from items to ensure you maintain three-point contact.

• * 3 points of contact - Always having 1 foot and 2 hands or 1 hand and 2 feet in contact with a handle, ladder or vehicle.

CECA Traffic and Safety UpdatePLEASE SLOW DOWN, DRIVE SAFELY AND WATCH OUT FOR EACH OTHER!trAffiC ArounD sChoolsi was involved in an online conversation recently where there is still a lot of concern with the way people are driving around the schools. slowdown, do not let your kids cross their own, do not stop on fish creek Blvd., no u-turns, etc. if you are unsure where the proper drop off and pick up are is, please contact your school. i have contacted our cps representatives to monitor the situations around the schools in the morning and around pick up times more often. please also keep in mind that evergreen is being used as a shortcut to get to 37th st. by people outside of our community. increased traffic and speed, so be mindful of this and stay safe. we are doing what we can to mitigate the traffic. we will not be getting traffic calming this year, but will continue to work on some other types of traffic solutions.

pArkingit has been brought to my attention again that people are parking facing the wrong direction. Be warned, this is illegal and you can get a ticket. Also, if you have large vehicles or trailers, do not park close to corners at the bend in roads. this makes the visibility difficult and could cause an accident. if you see this happen on a constant basis, please log a tsr (traffic service request), and also let me know. that is better than leaving notes on each other’s windshields. that doesn’t promote good neighbour values.

slowDown in plAygrounD zones!this time of year is when daylight starts lasting a little bit longer. i ask everyone to be safe when driving

in the playground zones and watch out for one another. please be safe around the school buses, watch for kids, no u-turns and be mindful of the people living nearby. they are your neighbours, be courteous.

fish Creek BlvDDid you know that the majority of fish creek Blvd is a 50 km/hr zone? it only becomes a 60 km/hr zone when you are travelling west and have past most of the condos on the north side. heed this as it is a good spot for speed traps. Alberta traffic rules state that unless otherwise posted the speed limit is 50km/hr and you can only increase your speed once you have reached the sign that indicates a higher speed.

once again, if you witness any traffic issues on an ongoing basis, please take the time to both report it to me at [email protected] and also via the traffic service request directly to the police. this can be done at http://www.calgary.ca/cps/pages/traffic/traffic-service-requests.aspx

please report road and sign issues to 311. this can be done online at http://www.calgary.ca/cs/csc/pages/311.aspx or at the app website http://spot311.calgary.ca

if you have any traffic questions or concerns, or wish to comment on anything i have written here, you can email me at [email protected]

thankspaul Bushelltraffic Director

protecting the rights of Constituents in our part of town:

you might be interested in the following letter, which i recently wrote to the nDp Minister of transportation…

urgent neeD for immeDiAte ChAnge in loCAtion of sw CAlgAry grAvel pit site

Many of my constituents are pleased to see the swcrr is beginning to be built--but i write to you today on behalf of constituents who have contacted my office in the past 2 weeks--who are very upset and angry that kGl has placed a gravel crushing operation on the land right behind their homes! A number of residents have been in direct contact with kGl; and some have actually been told that this was a fortuitous decision, if you can believe it. this is not in any way acceptable: there was no public consultation--& all they ever received

were household notices--after the operation had already begun to set up on site! the operation is to run non-stop for several years, 9 am - 9 pm, daily. the level of noise--and the smell from an operation of this magnitude--will impact the quality of life of these residents extremely negative ways. this brings damaging environmental impact on the community’s air quality: not just with dust from gravel crushing, but also from the large loaders coming and going...for years!

even though the site is located 400 meters from the homes, this does not guarantee that the heavy equipment will not be travelling close to the homes of the residents. Again, this is unacceptable. Alberta transportation has indicated that it is unfortunate kGl did not inform them about the plans to locate the gravel crusher west of Bridlewood until after the public consultations were done; and they also communicated that Alberta transportation expressed disappointment

to kGl over this issue; but that is not good enough in this case!

with the full support of the Bridlewood community Association and on behalf of their residents--we are formally requesting that Alberta transportation intercede--and have kGl move this operation to a site which is much more appropriately further away from residents...this month. your quick attention and action on this request is greatly appreciated.

As soon as i receive a response, i will let you know!

progressive Conservatives Actively Advocate for Concrete Child intervention improvements:

i am humbled & proud of our caucus for the continued support of the Ministerial panel on child intervention, which held its first meeting recently. Despite being 3rd party opposition, it was the pc’s who first suggest this panel to address serious problems in Alberta’s child intervention system! we are glad to see all parties finally getting to work on this critical issue so we can begin to save lives: the safety of our children transcends party lines, & we look forward to tangible outcomes that will address the serious problems in our system. while we are pleased to see the important work of the panel finally underway, we were disappointed to find out that the public meeting was not live-streamed online--nor were television cameras permitted to record the proceedings (despite the nDp having the resources). this severely limits AB’s ability to observe & participate in this process; so our pc caucus will live-stream the panel’s proceedings via our facebook page--as we did for this first meeting. the more light we shine on the child intervention system, the better!

l: After the tragedy in Quebec, i was honoured to visit with our muslim brothers & sisters at the sw Calgary mosque. Acts of violence are not acceptable anywhere, at any time: let’s find ways to live together in peace during this tumultuous period!

r: Despite the nDp majority & being the only pC mlA allowed to vote on the Committee for families & Communities, i recently made four motions--& they all passed—unanimously! the nDp proposed a bill that would have done the opposite of protecting motor vehicle repair customers; so i am glad that i was able to help ensure the bill will never see the light of day!

i donated $2,500 from my community fund this past December to the calgary woodcreek lions club. the lions club members do such fantastic in calgary. My Dad was a founding member of the

lions club in oyen many years ago, so i have a real soft spot for the lions. My donation in part, made it possible to add an additional eight-member family to the list of christmas hamper recipients. All the families for whom the club provided hampers for have been extremely grateful and were able to enjoy christmas with their loved ones.

i had fun gift-wrapping alongside my buddies at the woodcreek lions club for the christmas hampers. i thoroughly enjoyed the time spent doing so, and i am truly inspired by the club. thank you for having me and for putting me to work with the ribbons and wrapping paper!

the calgary catholic immigration society (ccis) was essential in coordinating the arrival and settlement for Government-Assisted refugees (GAr) who came to canada with the help of the federal government’s response to the syrian refugee crisis.

the syrian family i was a part of sponsoring, arrived in calgary last october to begin their new life in canada. our group was able to rent a home for them to move into and also raise enough money to fully support the family of three for one year.

the Mission statement for our Group is, “we will support syrians in their first year of living in canada by appropriately allocating funds held by ccis on the family`s behalf. we will be assisting in other ways if

possible, with the hope and intent to help the family integrate into the canadian and calgary communities, and to function independently.”

in partnering with ccis, they are assisting the family with all available canadian government programs, but they will look to our sponsoring Group to assist the family with their daily living needs and integration. our Group helped raise $42,000, which we are also responsible for allocating and distributing. we are all very proud that our combined efforts have assisted a family coming from war-torn Aleppo to live in a safe, caring community while continuing to build a successful life in calgary.

“Miracles can happen by changing one’s lifestyle, incorporating positive thinking in life, and developing a belief in God through spirituality that manifests itself

through life.” ~ Bob Nees Jr., CEO, Optimum Health Institute

recognizing the possibilities and limitations for oneself at each level, as the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr encourages us with the prayer “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Exercise Your Wellness!1. Make a list of your Wellness goals on the physical, mental and emotional and spiritual levels.

2. Write down one thing to focus on in each area of your life on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

3. Join me on Sundays at 10:30 at the Delta Calgary South for Your Grace Land where we focus on a positive faith and living with Inspirational Core Values including Wellness.

Bruce Reinhold Elvis Sheasby is a life coachwith a passion for helping others connect Inspirational Core Values to everyday life. He is leader of Your Grace Land church services and co-host of Your Grace Land Radio. His upcoming book is Your Grace Land – Achieving Success with Inspirational Core Values. In Plato’s Republic, Socrates is asked to describe the ideal or “well” person and does so by first describing how an ideal or just society functions and, then, applies that same criteria to the character of an individual. The parallel between society and an individual brings to light the connection between wellness of an individual and his or her relationship with the community and world. Wellness is a multi-faceted reality.

In 1873, while travelling from America to England to console his wife, just a few days after his four daughters drowned in a tragic accident at sea, Horatio Spafford wrote the powerful hymn It is Well with my Soul. The song is a remarkable testimony to his faith in that he is able to reach out to God and find wellness in his soul in the midst of enormous grief and tragedy.

“When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to know, It is well, It is well with my soul.” While Wellness is connected to positive health of the body, mind and emotions, it is indeed also connected to the state of one’s soul.

Over the years, I have ministered to many people who are physically ill or dying. Yet even in such a physical state, I’ve often witnessed a beautiful sense of well being. This reminds me that physical health is not always integral to wellness…although it very much can contribute in amazing ways.

On my own wellness journey, I have made several trips (pilgrimages) to a wellness centre in San Diego called the Optimum Health Institute, a mission of the Free Sacred Trinity Church. A big part of the program is a healthy raw food cleansing diet and exercise to tone the body. But, equally important in the program, is prayer, meditation, and positive thinking. In this healthy environment where those participating share a common interest in personal wellness, the loving caring community itself is an integral part of the healing or rebalancing experience - Wellness that can be achieved at many levels with each level influencing the other. The Grace of Wellness comes in
