Page 3 Words From Our 2018 Scholars

"I am proud to be a Dolphin Scholar because of my fami-ly's naval service. Their selfless sacri-fice for our country has inspired me to serve others using my passion for medi-cine and dance. I am so thankful for the financial support this scholarship has brought."

—Jessica Elliott

Congratulations Graduates

"It is an honor to be a part of the DSF. As a dependent of a retired subma-riner, I pride myself in ac-complishing all of the goals I set. Being a part of the DSF, I will always feel like I am part of the sub-marine family."

—Leia Fuentes

"I am grateful and honored to be selected as a Dol-phin Scholar in order to pursue my passions such as science and rowing in college while representing the submarine community." —Jeffrey Hesslink

"Being a Dolphin Scholar encourages me to continue to pursue my dream in becoming a medical doctor. I want to dedicate my life to helping those in need, and I am be-yond grateful for this financial sup-port."

—Abiana McCarty

“To be a Laura W. Bush Scholar is to continually strive forward; to always take that next step, no mat-ter the task. The ability to overcome the challenges faced before oneself allows one to hone their skills, bet-tering themselves and ulti-mately bringing them closer to the goals they wish to achieve.” —Ryan Shaw

"As I embark into my next challenge of attending university, I am grateful for the assistance this scholarship provides. Being a USS Hampton Scholar means maintaining my connection to the pride and strength of the elite submarine commu-nity. I plan to represent them with honor, disci-pline, and virtue." —Benjamin Soldow

"Today's medical climate casts a shadow on any plan to become a medical doctor. Intense course loads cou-pled with the leisure and social opportunities are norms doctors have all faced. Then there are the outra-geous tuition bills that are exponentially increasing. Lastly, there is the financial security, job stability, and legal liability uncertainties as our medical system morphs into whatever the future makes of it. As unpre-dictable and precarious as the medical field is, I am not deterred. Receiving the Dolphin Scholarship is a huge step closer to realizing this dream. At a time where our country needs steadfast direction based on duty to a greater good vice personal gain, this scholarship will enable me to take part in shaping our country’s path to define the availability of our medical services ensuring our medical system grows to remain the best in the world." —Bergen Mauerhan

Bangor Submarine Spouses’

Charitable Association Scholar During my summer breaks, I like to change up my routine, and last year I contin-ued volunteering and working, while adding an additional internship at Agape Therapeu-tic Riding Center, which I absolutely loved. This year, I stepped far out of my comfort zone when I discovered an amazing oppor-tunity of a marketing internship in Sevilla, and I am loving every minute! Despite some initial fear about living and traveling alone in a foreign country for the entire summer, I’m currently thriving in the heart of the city and making new friends from around the world every week. I’m taking advantage of my convenient location and traveling nearly every weekend. My travels include Cádiz, Carmona, Paris, Lisbon, and Morocco, with plans to visit Barcelona, Madrid, Amsterdam, Venice, Rome, Dublin, Glasgow, and London before returning home in August! It is said that one joins the Navy to see the world…and, thanks to DSF’s generosity, that rings true even for Navy veterans’ children! I am so grateful to have this unique opportunity at such a young age, and I excitedly anticipate where the next two years take me as I look forward to many more adventures made possible by you and DSF!!

¡Hasta luego!

¡Buenos días Dolphin Scholarship Foundation Familia!

Sending warmest (literally, it was 100 degrees last week!) wishes from Sevilla, Spain, where I am interning this summer thanks in large part to the generosity of the DSF and you! I am heading into my junior year as a Business Management, Human Resources, and Interna-tional Studies triple major at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and my sec-ond year as a Dolphin Scholar. I am involved on and off my campus working in the Speak-er’s Lab as a mentor and the Study Abroad Office as an ambassador, as well as serving as Vice President for Kelley Indianapolis Student Government, Student Advisor in the national honor societies ALD/PES, and Peer Mentor in the Honors College Mentoring Program.

After receiving a 4.0 GPA my first semester at IUPUI, I was invited to join two national honor societies - Alpha Lambda Delta & Phi Eta Sigma, or ALDPES. As ser-vice Committee Chair, where I served with my 7-member committee to plan monthly events for our hundreds of members to give back to the community.

Since freshman year of high school, I’ve worked, volunteered, and/or interned at Agape Therapeutic Rid-ing Center in Cicero, Indiana. My passion for service was instilled in me by my parents, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to combine it with my love of horses!

Paris was my first adventure outside of Spain where four girls from small-town Indiana, who’ve known each other for over a decade, reunited for a magical weekend!

Through my language classes, I met 4 girls from around the world and went on an adventure to Lisbon, where we climbed a mountain and explored the ruins of a castle, ate delicious food, and toured the hilly city. (I think I got my workout for the month in Lisboa!)

Most recently, I took a solo trip to Morocco. A solo trip with 142 strangers, that is! I made all sorts of new friends, including some cute, mischievous apes and camels both big and small.

I went to the Sevilla FC v. Real Madrid soccer game my first week in Spain...Americans are passionate about football, but that pales in comparison to a Spaniard’s love of the real fútbol!

Hello DSF Family!

I hope that you all are having fun in the sun this summer! First of all I would like to say congratulations to all of our new 2018 scholars. As always, the selection process was no easy task for our selection committee as they eagerly took on the assignment of scoring the applications of over 200 highly competitive and talented candidates. Each newly selected scholar should be proud to earn the prestigious title of Dolphin Scholar. It is truly a testament of their hard work, perse-verance and academic excellence.

This year highlights another first in DSF history. We were honored to award the first spouse scholarships to two very deserving submarine community spouses. At DSF we truly understand the hard work and many sacrifices that our mili-tary spouses make while keeping things together at home, oftentimes putting their own goals and ambitions on hold. We hope that the DSF Spouse Scholarship will provide some assistance in making some of those goals achievable.

As you read earlier in the newsletter, we were fortunate to add two more fully endowed scholarships this year. The Katy Chiles and Cindy Giambastiani scholarships were named to honor two of our former DSF presidents for their many con-tributions to the foundation and the submarine community. The addition of these scholarships brings our endowed schol-arship total to 46!!

As a reminder, DSF does offer scholarships for vocational training and certification. There is a high demand for skilled trade workers and that demand is growing larger as our nation increases the production submarines, ships, aircraft, and other equipment for our military.

In an effort to streamline the DSF scholarship application process we will be revamping our online application over the summer. The new application software is scheduled to be installed, tested and ready to receive the next set of applica-tions beginning October 1, 2018.

Fundraising continues to be an ongoing challenge for DSF due to our small submarine community. Our current annual scholarship program cost to fund 118 renewable scholarships is over $390,000. Even with 46 fully endowed scholar-ships, our scholarship program has an unfunded financial need of approximately 61 percent. Without the help of our Submarine Officers’ Spouses’ Associations, Family Readiness Groups and both individual and corporate supporters we would not be able to sustain our scholarship program at its current level. With that being said, I would like to thank eve-ryone for joining us in our effort to provide the best financial support for undergraduate and vocational education possi-ble to the children and spouses of the submarine community. Hooyah Submarine Force!!

Newly Endowed Scholarships

Katy was born on 7 January, 1939 in Beirut, Lebanon. Her father, Henry F. Pearson, was an archeologist. Her mother, Fannie Louise Lung, was from Bordeaux, France and was a nurse in Damascus, Syria. After the start of World War II the family came to the United States in Sep-tember 1941 and settled in Langhorne, PA. Later they moved to Newtown, PA. Katy graduated from George School and majored in biology at Hood College. After graduation she worked one year studying water purity, then married Hank Chiles, an Ensign in the navy in 1961. Three boys came quickly with twice as many moves in four years on the East Coast.

Assigned to Hawaii in 1966, she served as the family coordinator for Hank’s Ship. During their next tour of duty in Guam she taught elementary school. During this time she also volunteered for the American Red Cross and the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society as a social worker and stayed with the latter for most of the next 30 years. After duty at Mare Island, CA and Eng-land, she was questioned by the kids: “What island are we going to next, mom?”

Other assignments to San Diego, Bremerton, WA, Washington DC and Naples, Italy followed. She ran her own business as a potter in San Diego and the Washington DC area, which she put on hold in 1988. She became involved in Training and support for the spouses of service men

and women, developing programs for the spouses of commanding officers and working with Ombudsman programs and Family Ser-vice Centers to support families of deployed service members. She was Chairman of Volunteers for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society in Washington and Naples.

In Norfolk, Virginia, she directed and was President of the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation for children of submariners. The foun-dation provided 100 scholarship of $2,500 yearly supported by spouse-sponsored fund raising events. Reading scholarship applica-tions make anyone high on youth.

Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska was her last home in the Navy where she volunteered with the Henry Doorly Zoo, Red Cross, Joslyn Art Museum, Wives Club and food pantry. She was A Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue. Following Hank’s retirement in 1996, they returned to Alexandria, VA where Katy resumed pottery, mentored senor officers’ spouses in the Capstone Course at the National Defense University and volunteered at the National Military Family Association.

Katy passed away on 18 October 2006 of Alzheimer’s related illness.

Mrs. Cindy Giambastiani was raised in a military home. Her father began his career as an Air Force officer during World War II, and her two older brothers served as pilots in the Navy and Air Force during the Vietnam War. As a child, she lived all over the United States, as well as in Japan, Hawaii and England. She graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition before marrying and raising two children. Her husband is retired Navy Admiral Edmund P. Giambastiani. Between 2005 and 2007, Admiral Giambastiani was the second highest ranking military officer in the United States, serving as the seventh Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

As a Navy family, the Giambastianis have been stationed at various submarine and naval bases along the East and West coasts of the United States, as well as in Hawaii. For over 31 years, she has been serving in support groups and organizations in the local military communities, to include numerous volunteer jobs supporting submariners and their families, as well as her chil-dren’s extracurricular activities.

Some of her recent achievements in the military community include serving for two years as chairman of the Spouses Program for newly selected Navy flag officers, and as president of Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, a scholarship program for children of submariners. She co-authored the cookbook “Diving with the Dolphins” to commemorate the 100th anniversary of

the Submarine Force. Proceeds from the sale of the cookbooks benefited the Dolphin Scholarship. In July 2000, she was awarded the Meritorious Public Service Award by the Navy for her selfless support of the submarine and Navy communities. In July 2005, she was awarded the Distinguished Public Service Award for her continued dedication to military spouses and families. Mrs. Giam-bastiani has been an “Honorary Submariner” since 1991 when she submerged while aboard the USS San Juan (SSN 751). In her last position, Mrs. Giambastiani was the advisor for the Tidewater Officers’ Spouses’ Association, advisor for the Tidewater Collection, and president of the NATO Officers Wives Club. She also traveled with her husband, representing the United States at numerous NATO activities. As the wife of the vice chairman, she served on various national boards and committees in the National Capitol Region. In 2008 Mrs. Giambastiani was honored to be named the sponsor of the Virginia Class Submarine New Mexico (SSN779). She christened the New Mexico on Dec 8, 2008.

Admiral and Mrs. Giambastiani now spend their time in Florida and Maryland and have two children and 4 grandchildren.

Dolphin Scholarship Foundation is excited to announce the endowment of the Katy Chiles Scholarship and the Cindy Giam-

bastiani Scholarship honor ing two former Dolphin Scholarship Foundation Presidents.

We Remember Fondly...

Mrs. Betty Ogilvie Cooper

Dolphin Scholarship President 1986-1988

Betty Ogilvie Cooper, born in Pittsburgh, PA, was the daughter of the late William and Louise Ferguson Ogilvie. She was the wife of VADM Daniel L. Cooper for 60 years.

Betty grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio and graduated from Muskingum College. Throughout her long and very pro-ductive life, she could be best described as a servant leader. As the wife of a career Naval Officer, she was committed to supporting the wives of the men who served with Dan in

the submarine force and fund raising for those in the submarine community most in need. She was a leader in many of the churches and community organizations to which she belonged, to include serving as co-leader of the Stephen’s Ministry at the First Presbyterian Church in Reading PA. She selflessly spent time with her grand-children, hosting them at “Camp Ooma” and at her favorite vacation spot in Capon Springs, WV. She was a model wife, mother, grandmother and Christian woman, and she touched the lives of so many people.

Mrs. Margaret Helen Williams

Dolphin Scholarship President 1974-1977

Margaret was a bright high school student when Addie Hunnicutt, the principal of her school, and Mrs. Sol Nathan, a land and business owner, arranged for her to attend college. Between them, and against her father's wishes, they paid for her college tuition and arranged for a job and a place to live. She graduated from Magnolia A&M in her home state and became a teacher.

She was a Navy wife, supporting her husband in a 37-year career that saw him rise from seaman appren-tice to vice admiral, with his last job as Commander Submarine Atlantic Fleet and Commander Subma-rine Forces, NATO. The family moved 27 times, often when Joe was at sea. As Joe went up the ranks,

Margaret took care of the wardroom wives and families at home, helping them weather financial problems, broken water heaters and even ferrying them to a hospital when babies were born while the men were away. She loved the Navy because it gave her access to the world.

Margaret had a natural ability to put anyone at ease and was the consummate hostess. She was an elegant dresser, a thoughtful gift giver, a prolific note writer and a world-class shopper. She loved searching for small Limoges boxes and collecting fine art and well-made furniture. Everyone whose lives she touched remembers her with love.

DSF BOD Says “Fair Winds” to Departing Members...

The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors an-nounces the recent retirement of two of our members.

Charles T. Southall, PE and ETCM(SS) Robert L. Beech Jr., USN (Ret.) retired in May 2018. Both gentlemen contributed greatly to the board. Mr. Southall served as Nominating Commit-tee Chair from 2014-2018.

DSF thanks Charles and Robert for their dedicated service and wishes them the best of luck in their new endeavors.

...And “Welcome Aboard” to Our Newest Members

The position of DSF Chairperson has traditionally been filled by the spouse of COMSUBFOR. DSF bids a fond farewell to our

Chairperson, Mrs. Suzanne Tofalo. Suzanne and her hus-band, VADM Joe Tofalo will be retiring in August and setting out on a new adventure.

During the past three years, Suzanne has been instrumental in revitalizing the Norfolk spouse organization and has brought on two new board members to act as a link be-tween the foundation and the SOSA’s. Suzanne, a champion for navy families, fully support-ed the establishment of two new scholarships for spouses of qualified submariners.

Suzanne’s dynamic energy and innovative thinking were key

elements in ensuring that our scholarship program offered the best opportunities possible for the children and spouses of the submarine community. Thank you Suzanne for all you have done to support the Dolphin Scholarship Program.!!

We look forward to welcoming Mrs. Lisa Richard as our new DSF Chairperson!

The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of three new members to our DSF family.

RADM Steven W. Maas, USN (Ret.) joined the board in August 2017. Admiral Maas retired after a career of over 34 years in the Navy in 2007. Since retirement, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Navy Supply Corps Foundation. This year he completed three-year terms as a director of Goodsource of Cen-tral Florida, a subsidiary of Goodwill Industries, and as a direc-tor of the Halifax Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.

Mrs. Michele Lamphear joined the board in November. Michele has been a Navy spouse since 1992 and part of the submarine community since 1996. She has been active in SOSA, supported many DSF auctions, including serving as the Gold Chair for five. She was SOSA President for two years, during which time she attended DSF board meetings as a guest. Michele also served as SOSA Vice President for one year.

Mrs. Jerrie Garretson was welcomed onto the board in May. Jerrie has been a Navy spouse for over twenty years. A native of Tennessee, she has been active in supporting the Dolphin Schol-arship Foundation, as well as other organizations that assist the members of the Armed Forces and their families. She currently serves as the Silver Chair for the Dolphin Scholarship Founda-tion Auction.

We are excited to have these three talented people on board and look forward to their valuable input.

Beach Ambassadors Supports DSF

On Thursday, April 19, 2018 Beach Ambassadors held a Beauty and the Beers fundraising event for DSF with a night of pampering, libations & fun.

Rudy & Kelley Academy was there to pamper the community as they came together to raise money for scholar-ships. It was a fun night at Tapped Craft House with All Star Photobooth capturing the memories.

Members from Beach Ambassadors helped us celebrate our new scholars at the scholar reception and presented us a check for $750 from the Beauty & the Beers event.

The night includ-ed fantastic raffle prizes from Coach, manicures, keepsake Beauty & the Beers cups and a choice of beer or wine.

Thank you Beach Ambassadors for your support!!!

ANNUAL DONORS FY2018

While space limitations prevent us from listing all our wonderful donors here, your generosity makes a positive difference in the lives of submarine families.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Combined Federal Campaign (CFC): If you are a federal employee, you can support Dolphin Scholarship Foundation through the Combined Federal Cam-paign (CFC)'s fall campaign. With almost 200 CFC cam-paigns throughout the country and overseas, CFC is the world's largest, most successful annual workplace charity campaign and has raised over $7 billion for non-profits over the past 50 years. Each charity participating in the CFC has a unique CFC number assigned to them. To support Dolphin Scholarship Foundation through the CFC program, please designate your contribution to National #10102. Or click on the logo to go directly to our page and begin giving today. Employee Giving Programs

Thank You to All Our Corporate Donors!

Page 11

Benefits of Workplace Giving:

Convenience & Tax Benefits: You get the ease of automatic payroll deductions without losing the tax benefits of charita-ble giving.

Financially More Manageable: By having a smaller amount of money deducted from your paycheck throughout the year, you can donate a larger amount of money and make an even greater impact. For example, if you get paid twice a month, and you pledge $20 of each paycheck to a charity, by the end of the year you will have donated over $500 to that charity!

Matching Gifts: Many employers will offer to match your contributions up to a specified amount. This makes use of your employer's philanthropic support and maximizes your gift to the causes you care about.

Cost-efficient Fundraising: The cost of participating in a workplace giving campaign is much less than the cost of a participating charity launching a fundraising campaign that raises an equal amount of money. By participating in your employee giving program, your donation allows charities to spend more time and resources on services and programs rather than elaborate fundraising.

Unrestricted Money: Your donation provides charities with a year-round source of funds. Because this money is 'unrestricted', your donation provides charities with funds that enable them to decide how to best use that money to deliver vital programs and services.

If you work for a company, organization or the federal government, chances are you've had the opportunity to participate in an em-ployee giving program. Employee giving is an easy way to make tax-deductible donations to the charities you care about, typically with donations taken directly out of your paycheck.

Matching Gift Programs:

Matching gifts are corporate giving programs that reward

employees’ charitable donations. 65% of large companies in

the United States match employees’ donations. Most compa-

nies have a 1:1 matching gift ratio but many match up to 4:1.

By enrolling in your company’s matching gifts program, you

can make the most of your DSF donation, and create even

more scholarships for the dependents of the submarine force.

Click the link below to find a list of companies that have a

matching gifts program.
