REMOVAL
This procedure covers the removal and installation of the following components:
timing chains, chain guides, tensioners and sprockets.
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
For additional information, refer to: (414-00 Battery and Charging Specifications
System - General Information, Specifications).
1.
WARNING:
Do not work on or under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always
support the vehicle on safety stands.
Raise and support the vehicle.
2.
Remove the engine front cover.
For additional information, refer to: (303-01B Engine - V8 NEngine Front Cover
/A 4.4L Petrol, In-vehicle Repair).
3.
Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
For additional information, refer to: (303-14B Crankshaft Position Sensor
Electronic Engine Controls - V8 N/A 4.4L Petrol, Removal and Installation).

Lock the crankshaft.
Install the special tool.
Install the screw.
6.
Remove the RH variable camshaft timing (VCT) control solenoid housing.
Remove the 3 bolts.
Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
Install the special tools to the RH cylinder head.

Install the 3 bolts.
8.
Remove the RH primary timing chain tensioner assembly.
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the RH primary timing chain tensioner guide.
9.
Remove the bolt.
10.
Remove the RH primary timing chain.
Remove the bolt retaining the chain guide.
Remove the special tools from the RH cylinder head.11.
Remove the 3 bolts.
Remove the LH variable camshaft timing (VCT) control solenoid housing.
12.
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the nut.
Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
13.
Install the special tools to the LH cylinder head.
Install the 3 bolts.
Remove the LH primary timing chain tensioner.
14.
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the LH upper and lower primary timing chain tensioner guides.15.
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the LH primary timing chain.
16.
Remove the LH camshaft sprocket assembly.
17.
Remove the 2 Torx bolts.
18.
Remove the LH secondary timing chain tensioner and the secondary timing
chain.
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the RH camshaft sprocket assembly.
19.
Remove the 2 Torx bolts.
20.
Remove the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and the secondary timing
chain.
Remove the 2 retaining bolts.
NOTE:
Remove the crankshaft sprocket.

Note the orientation of the crankshaft sprocket.
Remove the crankshaft sprocket key.
INSTALLATION
Install the crankshaft sprocket key.1.
Clean the component mating faces.
Install the crankshaft sprocket.2.
Depress the LH secondary timing chain tensioner piston.3.
Using 1 mm diameter metal rod, retain the chain tensioner piston.
NOTE:
Install the LH secondary timing chain tensioner and chain to the camshaft
sprockets.

RH illustration shown, LH is similar.
Install the LH secondary timing chain tensioner retaining bolts.5.
Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm.
Install the LH primary timing chain.6.
Make sure the timing chain slack is on the tensioner side of the timing
chain.
Install the LH primary timing chain tensioner guides.7.
Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm.
CAUTION:
During timing chain tensioner compression, do not release the ratchet
stem until the timing chain tensioner piston is fully bottomed in its bore or
damage to the ratchet stem will result.
Install the LH primary timing chain tensioner.
8.
Using 3 mm diameter metal rod, retain the chain tensioner piston.
Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm.
Remove the retaining rod.
CAUTIONS:
Using the special tool, apply force to the tool in a counter-clockwise
direction, to tension the primary timing chain on its drive side.
The intake camshaft sprocket retaining bolt MUST be tightened before
the exhaust camshaft sprocket retaining bolt. Engine damage will occur
if this procedure is not followed.
Make sure that new bolts are installed.
Install the special tool to the LH exhaust camshaft sprocket.
9.
Tighten the intake camshaft sprocket retaining bolt to 20 Nm + 90 deg.
Tighten the exhaust camshaft sprocket retaining bolt to 20 Nm + 90 deg.
Install the LH VCT control solenoid housing.10.
Install the new O-ring seals.
Tighten the new bolts to 22 Nm.
Tighten the nut to 10 Nm.
Remove the special tools from the LH cylinder head.11.
Remove the 3 bolts.
12.
Install the special tools to the RH cylinder head.
Install the 3 bolts.
Retain the RH secondary timing chain tensioner piston.
13.
Using 1 mm diameter metal rod, retain the chain tensioner piston.
Install the RH secondary timing chain tensioner and the secondary timing chain
to the camshaft sprockets.
14.
NOTE:
Install the RH secondary timing chain and sprockets to the camshafts.
15.
Lightly tighten the camshaft sprocket Torx bolts, the sprockets MUST be
free to move.
Install the sprocket retaining Torx bolts to the camshafts.
Install the RH secondary timing chain tensioner retaining bolts.16.
Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm.
Tension the secondary timing chain.17.
Remove the retaining rod.
Install the RH primary timing chain.18.
Make sure the timing chain slack is on the tensioner side of the timing
chain.
Install the RH primary timing chain tensioner guide.19.
Tighten the bolts to 12 Nm.
CAUTION:

Install the RH primary timing chain tensioner.
20.

Install the RH VCT control solenoid housing.22.
Install the new O-ring seals.
Tighten the new bolts to 22 Nm.
Remove the special tool from the RH cylinder head.23.
Install the engine front cover.

24.
Remove the crankshaft locking tool.25.
Remove the screw.
Install the CKP sensor.

26.
Connect the battery ground cable.

BATTERY AND CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION

Battery Disconnect/Connect
CAUTION:
The vehicle status and battery condition must be established before attempting
battery disconnect/connect. Reference must be then made to the following table
to establish the relevant procedure to be followed.
NOTE:

If a new battery is installed, the battery monitoring system (BMS) must be reset
using Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment.

BATTERY TERMINAL
Make sure the clamping lug on the BMS is below the top of the negative terminal post as shown.
Procedure 1
Disconnect battery Connect battery
If possible, apply parking brake or 1.alternatively, chock wheels
Ensure that all electrical loads are switched 1. OFF
Switch off ignition2. Connect battery leads - GROUND lead last2.
Wait 2 minutes for engine 3.management system to 'power down'

Unlock the vehicle and disarm the alarm using the 'plip' button1. Ensure that all electrical 1.loads are switched OFF
Enter the vehicle, turn the ignition key to position II, apply the 2.parking brake or chock the wheels and then turn the ignition key to position 0. Remove the key to 'power down' the ICE system
Connect battery leads - 2.GROUND lead last
Wait 2 minutes for engine management system to 'power 3.down'
Switch on ignition3.
Open the hood4. Operate parking brake 4.switch several times until parking brake warning lamp is extinguished
Disconnect battery - GROUND lead first5.
NOTE:

Vehicle Jump (Emergency) Starting - Using Another Vehicle
CARRY OUT THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS IN THE SEQUENCE GIVEN
Connect one end of the BLACK (-) booster cable to the GROUND (-) battery terminal of the 1. DONORvehicle
If there is insufficient capacity in the battery to disarm 1. Connect battery -
the alarm, the alarm may sound on reconnection of the battery - Step 3 will
disarm the alarm
If the remote control module (RCM) is not functioning, it 1. Disconnect battery -
will be necessary to manually unlock the vehicle using the key.
Connect the other end of the BLACK (-) booster cable to a good earth point e.g. unpainted metal 2.surface or engine mounting at least 0.5 m (20.0 in) from the battery or fuel lines on the DISABLEDvehicle
Connect one end of the RED (+) booster cable to the positive (+) battery terminal of the 3. DONORvehicle
Connect the other end of the RED (+) booster cable to the positive (+) battery terminal of the 4. vehicleDISABLED
Start the engine of the vehicle and allow it to idle for a few minutes5. DONOR
Start the engine of the vehicle6. DISABLED
Allow engines of both vehicles to idle for a few minutes then switch off the engine of the 7. DONORvehicle
Disconnect the RED (+) booster cable from the battery of the vehicle8. PREVIOUSLY DISABLED
Disconnect the RED (+) booster cable from the battery of the vehicle9. DONOR
Disconnect the BLACK (-) booster cable from the earth point of the 10. PREVIOUSLY DISABLEDvehicle
Disconnect the BLACK (-) booster cable from the battery of the vehicle11. DONOR
WARNINGS:
During normal use, batteries emit explosive hydrogen gas sufficient to cause
severe explosions and capable of causing serious injury - keep sparks and
naked lights away from the engine compartment.
DO NOT attempt to start the disabled vehicle if it is suspected that the
electrolyte in the battery is frozen (before 14MY only).
Suitable eye protection must be worn when working in the vicinity of the
battery.
Take care when working near rotating parts of the engine.
Prior to attempting to start the disabled vehicle, ensure that the parking
brake is applied or suitably chock the wheels. Ensure that 'P' - PARK -
Automatic Gearbox or NEUTRAL - Manual Gearbox is selected.
CAUTIONS:
Ensure that all electrical loads are switched OFF prior to connecting booster
cables and disconnect booster cables prior to using any electrical equipment.
Ensure that the battery of the DONOR vehicle is of 12 volt capacity and that
all electrical loads on the disabled vehicle are switched OFF prior to
connecting booster cables.
Ensure that there is no physical contact between the donor and disabled
vehicles other than the booster cables.
Vehicle Jump (Emergency) Starting - Using a Slave Battery/Starting Aid
CARRY OUT THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS IN THE SEQUENCE GIVEN
Connect the end of the BLACK (-) booster cable to the ground (-) battery terminal of the vehicle1.
Connect the end of the RED (+) booster cable to the positive (+) battery terminal of the vehicle2.

Disconnect the RED (+) booster cable from the battery terminal of the vehicle4.
Disconnect the BLACK (-) booster cable from the battery terminal of the vehicle5.

Before the disconnection or removal of any components, make sure the
area around joint faces and connections are clean. Plug any open
connections to prevent contamination.
Remove the CKP sensor.
4.
Disconnect the electrical connector.
Remove the Torx screw.
INSTALLATION
To install, reverse the removal procedure.1.
Tighten the Torx screw to 8 Nm (6 lb.ft).
Using the approved diagnostic equipment, clear the powertrain control module
(PCM) adaptions.

Drain the cooling system.

Remove the throttle body gasket.

4.
Remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
For additional information, refer to: (303-01B Engine - V8 Crankshaft Front Seal

5.
Remove the cooling fan lower shroud.
6.
Release 2 clips from the cooling fan lower shroud.
Release and remove the cooling fan lower shroud from the cooling pack.
Remove the air conditioning (A/C) compressor.

7.
Remove the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
8.
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the cooling fan drive belt tensioner.
9.
Remove the bolt.
Disconnect the coolant expansion tank hose.
10.
Release the clip.
11.
Remove the coolant manifold.
Release the clips and disconnect the 4 coolant hoses.
Remove the 4 bolts.
Disconnect the electrical connector.
Position the coolant hoses aside for access.
Release the engine wiring harness clips.12.
Remove the accessory drive belt idler pulley.
13.
Remove the bolt.
14.
Remove the coolant pump pulley.
Remove the 3 bolts.
Remove the RH exhaust manifold heat shield.
15.
Remove the 2 screws.
Disconnect the battery positive cable.16.
Release the cover.
Remove the nut.
Disconnect the electrical connector.
Remove the generator.
17.
Remove the 3 bolts.
18.
Remove the generator mounting bracket.
Remove the 4 bolts.
Remove the RH valve cover.

19.
Remove the LH valve cover.
For additional information, refer to: (303-01B Engine - V8 N/A Left Valve Cover

Remove the engine front cover.
21.
Release the engine wiring harness clips.
Remove the 24 bolts.
Remove and discard the gasket.
INSTALLATION
Install the engine front cover.
1.
Clean the component mating faces.
Apply a bead of sealant 3 mm diameter, by 12 mm long, to the 8 places
indicated.
Evenly and progressively tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 12 Nm (9 lb.
ft).
2.
Install the crankshaft front oil seal.

3.
Install the LH valve cover.
For additional information, refer to: (303-01B Engine - V8 N/A Left Valve Cover
4.4L Petrol, In-vehicle Repair).
4.
Install the RH valve cover.
For additional information, refer to: (303-01B Engine - V8 N/A Right Valve Cover
4.4L Petrol, In-vehicle Repair).
5.
Install the generator mounting bracket.6.
Clean the locating dowels.
Clean the component mating faces.
Tighten the bolts to 45 Nm (33 lb.ft).
Install the generator.7.
Clean the component mating faces.
Tighten the bolts to 48 Nm (35 lb.ft).
Connect the battery positive cable.8.
Tighten the nut to 10 Nm (7 lb.ft).
Secure the cover.
Install the RH exhaust manifold heat shield.9.
Tighten the screws.
Install the coolant manifold.10.
Tighten the bolts to 6 Nm (4 lb.ft).
Install the coolant hoses.
Secure with the clips.
Install the coolant expansion tank hose.11.
Connect the clip.
Install the coolant pump pulley.12.
Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (7 lb.ft).
Install the accessory drive belt idler pulley.13.
Tighten the bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb.ft).
NOTE:
Secure the engine wiring harness clips.
14.
Care must be taken when installing the plug top coil ground connections.
The engine will fail to start on either or both banks if the ground is poor.
Install the cooling fan drive belt tensioner.15.
Tighten the pulley bolt to 25 Nm (18 lb.ft).
Tighten the tensioner bolt to 40 Nm (30 Ib.ft).
Install the A/C mounting bracket.16.
Install the A/C compressor.

17.
Install the cooling fan shroud.18.
Install the throttle body gasket.

19.
Refill and bleed the cooling system.
For additional information, refer to: Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding

20.
