It is that time of the year where a lot of people clear clutter out of their house and bring in

extra cash through a garage sale. It is a spring cleaning extended to summer, letting go of pre-loved items. Anywhere in the city, sale signs are up. Some are set up by families and others are collaboration of communities.

While most of the garage sale are simply informal selling and letting go of mostly unwanted home and personal items, the Light of Jesus Family-Singles organized a garage sale last July 27th to raise funds for their annual Love Life Retreat happening in November. It is a weekend of talks for spiritual and personal growth, worship and fun. Hosted by LOJF Singles, it is a way of helping people know themselves better.

The group opened their venue earlier than advertised and were surprised with a lot of people who came in. The crowd was non-stop that made almost half of the items sold in five hours. It was LOJF Singles first year organizing a garage sale and was happy for a successful turnout.

LOJF Singles is having a second round of sale on August 3rd, 8am-3pm at 578 Arlington. Furniture, electronics, clothes, shoes and many more await you.

And for those who want to join the retreat, you can message on Facebook LOJF-Singles Winnipeg.

DILG lauds Marikina City for being free of obstructionMarikina City Mayor

Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro said Tuesday that Sec. Eduardo Año has praised Marikina for being a city that is already free of obstruction.

According to Teodoro, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) chief told him during a closed-door meeting on Monday that Marikina is already clean. Año gave the Metro Manila mayors 60 days to clear their respective cities of obstructions, and to ensure that their streets are safe and clean for the public. The 60-day deadline was in accordance

with the instruction of President Duterte during his Fourth State of the Nation Address. Teodoro said he has instructed the department heads of the city government to work tirelessly to ensure that Marikina will always be clean, safe and walkable for the public.

A second look at Manny Pacquiao

When will Manny Pacquiao hang his gloves? His own

coach and trainer Freddie Roach is egging him to stop now that he’s ahead. He just taught the loudmouth Keith Thurman some boxing lessons. Say it, he has it already. Money, influence and fame are already tucked in his belt.

From Kid Kulafu to Pacman. I am biased like many of our countrymen, and hope the outcome

will favor the Pambansang Kamao every time he steps into the ring. He is no longer young at 40. Not true that life begins at 40. Kasabihan lang yun. It’s only a saying. And in case he can’t be persuaded to stop, I hope, we hope he will not go the way like De la Hoya, Margarito, Barrera, Cotto, Bradley, Hatton and many other known ring greats.

Nobody stays on top forever. Looking back on his life, he was 16 years old and was Kid Kulafu

then. Just as he survived the difficulties and harsh realities of life, the same to this nation which to this day still surviving and getting browbeating from the uncaring leaders who embraced kleptocracy, running around with their stolen money and dancing with joy when there are a lot more Kid Kulafus in many parts of the archipelago trying to search their place in the sun. President Duterte wanted to knock out corruption, but the corrupts are dancing and running around Mayweather style.

Manny Pacquiao’s journey in the boxing world may have to end sometime. I watched on YouTube his past fights vs different fighters when he was just starting at 17 years of age. He was awkward then. Raw but determined. That determination and perseverance claimed the ladders of different divisions. He became a congressman and a senator. For all you know he might even be Vice President.

As they say all good things never last. Be a preacher Manny! Be a recording artist, a movie star, a playing coach and remain a public servant. But you must stay as the same Manny. So nice, kind, generous and humble. Because from where you started, it was way, way down there. But like an eagle, you soared so high that the whole world took notice. And now, be like the palay grown in the rice fields of Saranggani, they bow down to the earth when their grains are ripe. This corner and all of the brown race are wishing you the best of luck everytime you step into the ring.

Editor’s Note: Formerly newspaperman of Daily Inquirer and other major dailies; former TV and radio Broadcaster. Former Director of various corporations like Clark Development Co.; and a former City of Angeles Councillor. Now a regular columnist of Sun Star Pampanga.

Villar seeks inquiry on disbursement of special fund for rice farmersSenator Cynthia Villar has filed

Senate Resolution No. 39 to look into the distribution of the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) following the signing of the Republic Act No. 11203 or the rice tariffication law.

RA 11203 mandated that P10 billion of the tariff collections on rice imports shall be appropriated annually for rice farmers through various programs that would help increase their production. In her resolution, Villar cited reports that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) released in December 2018 P5 billion for the RCEF. Half of the fund shall be allocated to the Philippine Center for Post

Harvest Development and Modernization (PhilMech); 30 percent to the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice); 10 percent for the credit facility that will be managed by the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) and the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP); and 10 percent for farmers’ training on rice crop production, modern rice farming techniques, seed production, farm mechanization, and knowledge or technology transfer.

The Senator added that the agencies involved in implementation of the law should be ready by now otherwise they might miss the planting season on December to March.

Filipino Bilingual Program Calls for New StudentsCommunity urges Seven Oaks School Division to continue monumental language program

Manitoba’s growing Filipino-Canadian community has its hopes set on keeping the country’s first Filipino bilingual

program running at A. E. Wright School in Seven Oaks School Division.

At least 20 students in grades K to one as well as 20 students in grades two to three are needed for the program to continue in September 2019. However, numbers have fallen short. Educators and community supporters are pushing to up registrations before the end of August.

Parents should be able to call the school and register their child without being discouraged that the program may not

continue. It has been a struggle to encourage parents to enroll their children because the support from the School Division is hardly there. We’ve been left out of information sessions and school open houses to let parents know this program exists. We are really hoping the Filipino-Canadian community can get the word out, show support, and stop the School Division from ending the program, said parent, Ivy Lopez-Sarmiento, whose twin daughters attended the program in its inaugural year. The Filipino Bilingual Program is based on the Manitoba Education

Curriculum and divides the medium of instruction between Filipino in arts subjects and English in math and sciences. The Seven Oaks School Division also currently offers Ukrainian and Ojibwe bilingual programs.

It is important that the Filipino Bilingual Program continue. The Filipino-Canadian community here is now over 80,000 strong. The diversity among our students as newcomer children, as well as second and third generation Canadians, range from knowing so much

to knowing so little about their heritage and language. The Filipino Bilingual Program is an important opportunity for them to build their own positive self-identity in a nurturing and safe cultural environment. They already exemplify, in just one year, what it means to grow with this sense of belonging, said teacher, Porfiria (Poria) Pedrina. Parents are urged to contact one of the advocates Cory Juan at 204-694-8517 or e-mail at [email protected], to register their children by the end of August.

PAHALANG PABABA

Crank up the power and project yourself out to the world. Things should go extremely well for you, so don’t shy away from any part of it. In fact, take this opportunity to shine as brightly as you can. Bring out your radiant smile as often as possible - it’s contagious. There is tremendous power behind your self-confidence, so tackle everything with energy and excitement.

Come out of serious mode for yourself laugh. Hold a game at your home and invite some good friends over to play cards and nibble on snacks. This is have fun, so let loose and freely express yourself in the best way you see fit. Realize how much power you have in your jovial nature. Spread it generously.

You have an incredibly strong influence on others, just because yours is a fun-loving, peaceful, and harmonious nature. Your charm will take you any place you want to go, so use it at your will. Focus attention on the positive and walk on the sunny side of the street. Smile and bring good cheer to the people you meet.

Transform your energy from intense, hard, and caustic to lighthearted, fun, and loving. Put your aggressions away. Laugh a little! This will take you a long way. Little things may crop up that could disrupt your routine, but a warm smile is all you need to defuse any frustration or negativity.

You might find that others have a “me first” attitude that doesn’t sit quite right with you. You may need to wake them up and say, “Hey, what about everybody else?” Try not to whine as you deliver this message. Desperation or complaining will get you nowhere. Be friendly and jovial in your approach and you will have the world at your feet.

Your jovial approach to every situation is just what the doctor ordered. Spend time with children and enjoy their magical world. Freely spread your love and affection to the people around you. Make sure that the corners of people’s mouths are turning up instead of down. A friendly attitude will take you far.

Let your romantic nature have some fun. Take a time-out and relax a little. Don’t feel guilty about not being as serious as you think you should be. The winner is the one who can smile the most. Enter this contest with the intention of winning. The rewards will last a long time. The people you encounter won’t be able to help but smile back.

Appreciate what you have, especially the people who love you. Adopt an attitude of gratitude and look to see the beauty in everything around you. Compliment others and let them know how much they mean to you. These words and deeds will have a ripple effect that will bring you a great deal of good fortune.

It’s time for you to come out of hibernation. Shake off the blues and come into the light. Play and have fun. The mood is lighthearted and jovial, so be the first with a joke or silly story. Do what you can to make others laugh. Let the fire within you burn at its brightest.

There’s a great deal of power behind your emotions, and you need to express it. Other people’s stubborn attitudes may hinder your progress, so take this as a hint that you might need to loosen your grip on a certain viewpoint you’re fiercely clinging to. Jump onstage and take the podium. Speak your mind even if you don’t always agree with the group.

The doldrums are over and it’s time to pick up the pace. Come out of your house in full regalia. Be proud of what you have to offer to the world. Be courageous in your dealings with others. Take the time to express yourself fully in a creative manner. The bigger the smile you wear, the further you will go in just about every situation.

A kind gesture and warm word won’t be forgotten. People are going to appreciate extra long hugs, so give them out like candy to everyone you meet. Let your generous and kind spirit shine through. Open your arms wide to spread love to the world around you. It’s the perfect for laughter and affection, so do your part.

Allan Par bound for Manila in August 2019

Photos by Dante Aviso

There is no place like home, and Allan Par’s home is in Alfonso, Cavite!

“I want to go home,” as if a litany being said by Allan Par, a homeless Filipino who got so much media attention when he built a temporary shack at Omand Creek, and became his home while Dante Aviso and Dennis Castaneda have been working to raise fund for his one-way ticket to Manila; and while the Winnipeggers, Filipinos and Canadians alike have been bringing some clothes, food , bottled water, beddings and other home items to make Alan comfortable; and while some job offers have been pouring to help Allan.

“I want to go home, and thanks to all your help,” his

common answer everytime he is asked to stay.

For the past five years, Allan has been staying and taking shelter under the bridge, and for this summer, he decided to build a shack, freeing himself not to stay in some houses managed by social agencies, like the Main Street Project.

“We are lucky to get financial support from many people, especially from an anonymous donor for his ticket to Manila,” Dante Aviso said. And Allan’s trip to Manila will be sometime in August.

To date, more than $2,500 was raised thru after the gofundme stopped accepting cash donations.

The travel papers are already prepared by the Deputy Consul Bernardette Fernandez of the Philippine Consul General in

Toronto, thru the initiative of Dennis Castaneda.

At least with this extra money, Allan can make adjustment in Alfonso, Cavite where he will stay with his sister, Mila.

A homeless for five years, Allan Par is a permanent resident holder who arrived in Winnipeg 9 years ago. He had been working part time but most of the time, he was being laid off or let go by the companies. And he was wondering why the management would not give him the opportunity for good living.

“I do not know why I encounter this problem in Canada,” he said in one of the media interviews.

After the media coverage, Allan received many donations and kinds, and during our visit, he said: “Please give those bottled water to the church.”

Dante Aviso has requested the donors not to bring perishable food because his shack has no fridge or cooler to store those donated food.

“I think what Allan needs are canned goods to be brought to the Philippines when he leaves for Manila this coming August.” Aviso said.

Meanwhile, FJ was able to interview online Allan’s sister Mila, who lives in Alfonso, Cavite

She told the Filipino Journal that they are anticipating for his return to the Philippines.

“And his return will be his birthday gift to me,” Mila said.

And when asked about her youngest brother’s decision to go back the Philippines Mila mentioned that they were able to talk to him: “And he mentioned about his hardship in Winnipeg, and sometimes, we would send money to him.”

At the beginning of his stay in Winnipeg, according to Mila, he had a good earning income and she did not know why her brother turned into a homeless person. And she revealed that Allan had no experience in carpentry.

“He learned carpentry in Winnipeg, and through his own way, he was able to build his temporary shelter,” Mila said.

And Mila sent this message:” To all who helped my brother, Allan, thank you very much. Hope the Lord will bless you all.”

The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

by Gem and Lita Anis

Berlin, historic capital of Germany and Europe's "City of Cool", is a vibrant and fascinating city well worth the trip - an August

Baltic cruise of northern Europe. What is there to see? Museums, Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Reichstag, the Kurfurstendamm, the Pariser Platz, the Unter den Linden, and the Brandenburg Gate.

Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) is one of the most well-known landmarks of Germany and is Berlin's most famous monument. It is the country's symbol of division during the tense Cold War between the capitalist United States with its allies (the Western Bloc) and the Communist Soviet Union with its satellite states (the Eastern Bloc) and at the sametime a symbol of German reunification after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, i.e., forty-five years (45) years later after World War II.

It must be recalled that at the end of the Second World War Germany was divided into four zones, each zone occupied by the victorious Allied powers - the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. The three areas occupied by the US, France and Britain became officially West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany)) and the zone occupied by the Soviet Union emerged as East Germany (German Democratic Republic). Berlin was also divided into West Berlin and East Berlin, geographically and politically separated by the Berlin Wall, (Berliner Mauer), often referred to as the "Wall of Shame". The barrier of concrete and barbed wire with towers placed along the large walls prevented emigration of East Germans by crossing over the border from East Berlin into West Berlin. From 1961 to 1989 around 5,000 people attempted to

cross the wall and escape with an estimated death toll of 125.

The neo-classicial Brandenburg Gate with its design based upon the "Propylaea", the gateway that welcomes visitors to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, was erected between 1788 and 1791. Consisting of 12 Doric columns, six to each side, forming 5 passageways, the gate, representing peace, is dominated by the "quadriga", the four-horse chariot driven by the Goddess of Victory and Peace, Victoria. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte after whipping the Prussian Army snatched the four sculpted horses as a souvenir. The Prussians took them back in 1814.

An important part of German history was made here. The then United States President Ronald Reagan said here: "Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, open this Gate! Tear down this Wall!" On 09 November 1989, the East German government announced that all German Democratic Republic citizens could visit West Germany. The wall was primarily demolished in 1990. Once again the Brandenburg Gate becomes a symbol of Germany`s unity rather than its division.

Situated by the Gate is the Pariser Platz just at the end of the grassed pedestrian mall, the Ùnter den Linden (Under the Linden Trees), that stretches 1.5 kms. long lined with four rows of linden trees.

Pariser Platz is flanked by the American and French Embassies, the luxury Adlon Hotel, the Aacademy of Arts, and several blocks of apartments and offices.

Visiting Berlin make us become also a part of its culture and history.
