I recently read a list ofwhat one can say when re-ceiving a Christmas gift thatyou do not like. Among themwere: “Hey! Now thatʼs agift!” (My thought was that

this one would also be useful when seeing an ugly baby. Justsubstitute “baby” for “gift”.) This one is handy for those who havea pooch: “If the dog buries this, Iʼll be furious!” My favorite linewas: “What did it do to deserve this?!”

This last one gave me a laugh, but also caused me to think ona serious thought: “What did I do to deserve Godʼs Christmasgift?” The answer is easy – I did zip, zero, nada! Godʼs Wordsays plainly in the Bibleʼs book to the Ephesians in chapter two:“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of your-selves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man shouldboast.” (2:8-9)

Grace, by definition is Godʼs undeserved favor and it is not “ofourselves”. Being saved is a gift that is unconnected with ourpersonal goodness or good deeds. It is “not of works lest anyman should boast (brag)”. The only bragging done in heaven ison the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He came into thisworld, lived a sinless life and offered Himself as a substitute forhelpless sinners who were unable to save themselves. Friend,have you received Godʼs gift?

LITCHFIELD - Geneva Rae Gates, 84, died December 14,

2015. She was a newspaperwoman, a writer, andthe owner-operator of Genevaʼs Trip Takers, Inc.

Her column “Over The Fence,” and later withjust her by-line, has appeared every Tuesday insome publication in the area for the past 58years. She wrote for the Litchfield Gazette, andwas the Modern Living Editor at The HillsdaleDaily News for 21 years.

During her stay at the Daily News, she origi-nated group travel and accompanied readers ontours across the United States. When she leftthere, she started Genevaʼs Trip Takers, and thenwrote for The Jackson Sun, a supplement to theJackson Citizen Patriot. She and her husband ex-panded the travel company to include toursthroughout the world, and escorted every trip.

In 1968 she received a volunteer serviceaward in a joint session of the House and Senate.Gov. William Milliken presented the award.

She was born Jan. 10, 1931 in Litchfield, thedaughter of James and Elsie Arthur. She grew upin the home of her grandparents, Raymond andBessie Weese and graduated from Litchfield HighSchool in 1949.

Preceded in death by her husband, Frank H.Gates, Geneva is survived by two daughters,Molly Bazydlo (Henry) of Chelsea, and SallySchwartz (Rob) of Muskegon; one son, TonyGates, of Grand Rapids; and seven grandchil-dren and two great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorialservice will be held at the Dow Hotel & Confer-ence Center, Hillsdale College on January 10,2016, from 2-4 pm, including a Celebration of LifeService at 3 pm.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the LitchfieldVeteransʼ Memorial Fund is appreciated. Checksshould be written to the Hillsdale County Com-munity Foundation with “Veteranʼs MemorialFund” written on the memo line and mailed toDiane Smith, PO Box 345, Litchfield, MI 49252.

The Hillsdale County Community Foundation is proud to

announce the continuation of a recognition program for

Hillsdale County teachers. As a result of the generosity of the

Stanton Foundation, one Hillsdale County teacher will be the

recipient of a $10,000 award as Teacher of the Year. Since the

program’s inception in 2012, $50,000 has been awarded to

Hillsdale County educators. The intent of the award is to recog-

nize an educator in Hillsdale County who is known for going

above and beyond the standard requirements and job duties

associated with being a teacher, who enriches the lives of their

students and shows dedication to their school and community.

Nominations are accepted from educational professionals, stu-

dents, parents, and community members in general. All nomi-

nees to pass the initial screening will then be invited to submit

an application form. Nomination forms can be obtained from the

superintendents of area schools, from the Hillsdale County

Community Foundation at 2 South Howell Street in Hillsdale, or

online at www.abouthccf.org. Nominations will be accepted until

4 pm on January 29th.
