BROTHER TO BROTHERBUSINESS PARTNER OF THE YEAR
Brother to Brother is being recognized as the Sacramento Police Department’s Business Partner of the Year for 2017. Brother to Brother may be a new organization but it has made a big impact since opening its doors in 2017. Brother to Brother has served the African-American boys and men of the Del Paso Heights community, and is making great strides to improve the quality of life for everyone in the neighborhood. Brother to Brother understands the importance of an engaged community with local law enforcement that will help build trust and appreciation.
Brother to Brother works closely with the north area staff and they value a healthy community relationship with the Sacramento Police Department that includes ongoing, productive, authentic dialogue and community engagement. This constant healthy interaction continues to help shape a new perception of one another with mutual respect and appreciation. In doing so, they can look through a common focal lens to impact the physical and emotional landscape, decrease violence, improve crisis response and prevention, create opportunities to thrive and ultimately help build a healthy community.
Brother to Brother grew informally out of decades of professional and volunteer efforts by two committed Del Paso Heights (DPH) residents, Larry Craig and Mervin Brookins. For years, these men have played important, stabilizing roles in the 95838 community. Their grassroots work was captured, designed and integrated with the insight and professional experience from the Neighborhood Wellness Foundation. In January, 2017, the formal version of Brother to Brother began as a Sacramento City’s Gang Prevention and Intervention program to address the hard-core and gang-affiliated population in DPH. Over the past eighteen months, Brother to Brother has now expanded to a multi-faceted program to help create a healthy DPH community.
The entire team at Brother to Brother has been available at a moment’s notice to help with whatever the task may be. They are community warriors who are making a real needed change in Del Paso Heights, and their partnership with SPD has been invaluable. The Sacramento Police Department is honored to recognize Brother to Brother as our Business Partner of the Year and is thankful to have such a strong relationship with them. They have been an influential partner in helping to create an engaged community, which ultimately builds a safer city.
