Residents of Satyapal, Dookrun, Lotus and Hardev roads are stay-ing home in fear after a spate of violent incidents and robberies in their neighbourhood.

Residents told Public Eye that at around 10pm on Good Friday, fi fty-two-year-old Reginald Peters and his two friends were walk-ing toward their home on Satya-pal Road when they were robbed and attacked. According to Peters sister, Linda van Wyk, she saw her brother walking up the road and rushed toward him when she saw him collapse just outside their home.

He was bruised all across his face and he was bleeding from his ears and head. The image is still fresh in my mind. I cant even sleep at night, said an emotional Van Wyk.

Peters was rushed to hospital and treated for severe bleeding, however he died a few days later.

Other residents spoke to Public Eye on condition of ano-nymity as they fear victimization. They said since the Good Friday incident they were now experi-encing robberies and assaults in the neighbourhood on an almost daily basis.

A man was stabbed on the cor-ner of Sarojini and Hardev roads this weekend and robbed of his clothes. On the same night another man was attacked

with a chopper and robbed of his cell phone and clothing, said a resident who has been living in the area for 32 years.

We are so scared to live here now. Our children cannot go to the tuckshop anymore as even they are being robbed for their money, the resident added. The residents said that police have been to the area on numerous occasions in the past two weeks but even the strong police pres-ence in the area hasnt alleviated the crime rate.

The police come here but there is an abandoned house on Satyapal Road where the robbers hide. The house has been aban-doned for about fi ve years and when the police come, the crimi-nals hide there, said one resident.

The residents claim that they havent been able to get assistance from their ward councillor, Mary

Schalkwyk as they dont even know what she looks like. They claim that their ward council-lor has never visited their area or hosted a ward meeting where they could have voiced their concerns.

Our ward councillor is based in Woodlands and we are too afraid to cross the railway line to get to her offi ces. We will get robbed and who knows what will happen to us as the railway line is very dangerous, said a resident.

After 18 years and five million CR-VsHonda has a pretty good idea what thetypical motorist wants in a soft-roader.A high-and-handsome driving position, reason-

able ground clearance, big wheels, a fair dose oftorque from the engine, and a nose and bum thataren't going to dig into the ground when ap-proaching or departing from a steep change ingradient are reasonably important for perhaps 20percent of buyers, and the Honda has most ofthese.

Things like the low-range transmission and dif-ferential locks that are essential for severe off-roadconditions are secondary to comfort, safety, on-roadhandling and everyday practicality in a car that willbe used mainly around town with the occasionalsojourn to a game park or muddy farm road thatwould be inaccessible to an everyday hatchback orsaloon.

The fourth-generation CR-V recently launched inSouth Africa is thus Honda's interpretation of whata soft-roader or, as they're increasingly called,crossover vehicle, should be. While still possessingthe traits that make it more fun than a Civic to takeon holiday in Africa, its focus has shifted sig-nificantly towards day-to-day use as a family wag-on.

My first impression of the CR-V 2.4 VTECExecutive AT (selling for R444,900) delivered forevaluation was that it was considerably bigger thanthe outgoing model so I was surprised to hear that it'sactually 5mm shorter than its predecessor and theoverall height has been reduced by 30mm. It's alsoslightly wider. The change in altitude was broughtabout by lowering the roof height by 15mm and,more importantly for those who'll ever go off-road,reducing ground clearance by the same amount.

Despite the reduced dimensions, Honda says thatthe new car offers more interior space than theoutgoing model, and I wouldn't argue with them.There's plenty of head and legroom in the front andrear, and the boot is massive, providing 589 litres ofspace with the rear seats in position, and 1,146 withthe seats folded down.

As with most of the CR-V range the test car wasa four-wheel drive, but there's also, for the first time,a two-wheel-drive version of the vehicle in the eight-model line-up. This is only available with the114kW two-litre petrol engine, but at R299,000 withthe more than adequate Comfort specification leveloffers great value and will, for many buyers, provide

exactly what they want for a reasonably affordableR299,900.

It's clear that the Honda focussed on interiorquality when commissioning their new CR-V. Asusual for the marque, the dash is understated,uncomplicated and classy, with the trim andswitchgear all feeling solid. The test vehicle hadalmost 10,000km on the clock - high for a pressvehicle - but still felt brand new.

Interestingly, the bulky ignition key showed signsof wear or abuse. It's meant to fold the steel bladeaway like that of a pocket knife when you push in abutton, but the test unit's key refused to cooperate,making it hard on the pocket in more than one way.I called the agents to price a new key and discoveredthat the blank would set me back R4,731, withcutting and coding another R991. That's expensivebut no more so than with lots of other cars, so keepyours safe!

The engine of the test vehicle was the 140kWfour-cylinder petrol unit that's good for 220Nm oftorque at 4,300rpm. Other engines in the range arethe 114kW petrol engine in the lone two-wheel-drive version, and the 110kW/ 350Nm turbodieselthat power the more-expensive DTEC models.

The car we drove is available only with a five-speed auto transmission, and the combinationworked pretty well on the road. The gearbox workswell in auto mode, and the steering wheel paddlesallow you to shift manually should you feel the need.The car isn't a rocketship, but the claimed 0-100 timeof 11,1 seconds and top speed of 190km/h aren'tgoing to leave most families wanting, and with fuelconsumption of around 11 litres/100km it's notgoing to break the bank.

The Honda CR-V is a fine family wagon that doesexactly what's expected of it without any fuss orb o t h e r.

Value for money

WITH prices ranging from R299,900 toR499,900, depending upon the model, it willsatisfy a wide range of customers withoutcompromising on Honda's legendary qual-ity and reliability. It comes with a three-year/100,000km warranty and a five-year/90,000 km service plan.

To be in the market for a new one-ton pick-up - orbakkie, if you will - must be a happy state ofaffairs. And a deliciously perplexing one too.South Africans love bakkies, double cabs included, and

are ridiculously spoilt for choice with a whole new wave ofextraordinarily capable, sophisticated pick-ups that haveevolved hugely from the basic, no frills, workhorse originsof the breed.

Local buyers can now choose from the likes of the VWAmarok - whose comparatively small-capacity, two-litreturbo-diesel motor is proving far more robust than the doom-sayers predicted - the Ford Ranger, and the GWM Steed 5,to mention a few.

The last boasts a highly competitive price tag, un-dercutting the competition, and yet it's a well-roundedmachine, proof of just how far this Chinese manufacturer'sproducts have come in a short space of time. I should know.For the past couple of months a Steed 5 2.0 VGT DoubleCab 4X4 has been sitting in my driveway, and its so-phistication and durability impresses.

Then, of course, there's that old South African stalwart,the Toyota Hilux, and now the choice facing SA bakkiebuyers has become yet more wonderfully catholic with theadvent of the new, sixth-generation Isuzu KB. And these areall quite excellent machines, with buyer choice being largelydictated by brand allegiance, aesthetics and perceived image- although this is a lesser concern when buying a workhorseas opposed to leisure vehicle - and price, a category in whichthe GWM triumphs.

Now if you follow motoring matters, you've probablyread at least something about the KB, which has attractedwell-deserved positive press since its launch in March, butyou might not know just how vast a range it is - the line-upnumbers 21 models, stretching from single-cab workhorsesto sybaritic double cabs, with prices ranging from R218,900to R464,400.

I've just spent a satisfying week with one of the lessermodels - a KB 250 Extended Cab LE, which clocks in at arelatively modest R290,700.

It's a handsome vehicle, this. And Isuzu is not stretchingthe truth when they refer to its "bold new styling." Much isalso made of durability, and the KB has undergone test anddevelopment equating to four million kilometres, while interms of size the new machine is a little larger than its much-loved predecessor, which equates to more interior space anda more a more space-efficient load box.

It looks big and imposing, does the KB, while the newall-new Extended Cab, which comprises three models, withthe variant I tested being the entry-level Extended Cab,allows buyers to safely transport smaller and presumablymore valuable loads behind the seats. Good access to thisarea is by means of Flex Doors that can be opened frominside or outside the vehicle. The EB also has a strength-ened "B" pillar and features three-bolt hinges for extrastrength in case of an impact.

It might be a workhorse, but the model I had offeredalmost the same silence and ride quality as a passenger car,with huge interior room, high build quality and excellentergonomics, as well as plenty of stowage space for odds andends. Meanwhile, the massive load box with a height downby 15mm made helping a friend move house over theweekend a pleasure. Well, almost. Moving house is neveran enjoyable chore.

The 2.5-litre D-TEQ motor provides a comparativelymodest 85kW, but all the torque you'd expect of a turbo-diesel, with 280Nm kicking in from just 1,800rpm. Claimeddiesel consumption in this motor, carried over from theprevious range, is 7.7 litres per 100km, and naturally thereare also petrol variants to be had in the new KB line up.

The chassis and suspension are all-new, too, and even inKB 250 Extended Cab LE guise, handling was quitecommendable for a bakkie, while a rear diff-lock meansthat it will be more than passingly capable in the roughs t u ff .

All of which, as I said, means that anyone in the marketfor a pick-up now faces an even vaster choice of new-generation models than ever - although apocryphal ev-idence indicates that Isuzu has a loyal buyer-core whosimply won't settle for anything else.

Maserati announced this week thatthey're reviving the Ghibli name-plate, but before images of a sleek,two door Italian masterpiece have your mindwandering, let me bring you back down toearth.

Because not only is the 2013 Ghibli a four-doorsaloon, it's also a diesel.

No, you don't need a new pair of specs;Maserati's newest addition to the family will havean oil burner under the hood. And there's only onereason for it, they need to sell cars. Fifty thousandof them a year in fact, a target the company set forthemselves alongside the Ghibli's announce-ment.

So what is the Ghibli exactly? Well it's built ona shortened version of the Quattroporte's plat-form, built to do battle with the likes of BMW's 5,Jaguar's XF and perhaps the Mercedes CLS. Thedieselis a 3.0-litre twin-turbo largely based on theone from Jeep's Grand Cherokee, only it's beenfiddled to sound better and produce moreoomph.

There will also be two petrol motors, bothtwin-turbo V6s made by Ferrari producing307kW and 322kW respectively. All three en-gines deliver power to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

While they haven't been able to supply per-formance figures, Maserati say the Ghibli will bemore of a driver's car than the Quattroporte, withan aggressive on-road character.

No surprise then that a V8 is expected in the notso distant future and there'll be an all-wheel-driveoption as well.

If performance isn't your thing, you'll be gladto know that the baby Maser is exceptionally easyon the eye.

The front quarter is a beautiful blend of Quat-troporte and Gran Turismo - while the interior istypically Italian, designed to go beyond merefunction by encapsulating occupants in pure lux-

u r y.It'll be officially unveiled at the Shanghai motor

show next week, so if you're in the area, pop in andhave a gander.

If not, it's believed that deliveries of right handdrive derivatives will commence in October, sothey'll probably only get round to sunny South Africasometime in 2014, that is if the postal service don'tdecide to go on strike again.

I am aged 45 and have been attend-ing the Sri Siva Soobramaniar and Mari-ammen temple fi rewalk-ing for the past 18 yrs.

I am totally disgusted by the behaviour of the infamous "honorary president" of the Tem-ple, Prega Padayachee. I witnessed over the years that Padayachees behaviour has gotten out of hand. It is time peo-ple speak out against the abuse they experience at the hands of Paday-achee!

I witnessed on var-ious occasions that women who are in a trance state were bla-tantly pushed out of the way by Padayachee and other offi cials. A lady was in tears after being pushed and shoved out the way in a barbaric way that we wouldn't nor-mally expect from a sen-ior offi cial.

We strive to honour the Divine Mother during the 10 days. Sadly this man doesn't see the need to show some respect for female as well as male devotees of the Temple. These offi cials need to learn to respect the devo-tees and not to even lay a

fi nger on a woman during the fast, let alone shove them out the way! What if a lady had fallen over and injured herself?

Does Prega Padayachee treat female members of his family in the same way?

With reference to the article published on 12 April of Public Eye. I was standing right next to Ramsawak Sunker when he was addressed, or rather threatened, by Temple offi cials. Is is even more saddening that Sunny Naidoo tried to cover up the story by stating he "consoled" Sunker.

Sunker was threatened, rather than consoled, about crossing the fi re. I looked on as the offi cials including Balan Naidoo, Prega Padayachee and a senior offi cial continued to harass Sunker, who tried to reason with them politely.

It is rather sad that Sunny Naidoo (being the Temple spokes-person) tries to provide a dishon-est response to issues presented to him. These Temple offi cials need to take lessons from Durban Tem-ple offi cials and be more compas-sionate and welcoming to the pub-lic during festivals.

If they do so, I am sure that they would have the co-operation of devotees, rather than receiving complaints. Let's work together and get more people to attend Temple rather than vow never to go back to the Temple in question.

60 firewalkers burnt

Some 60 devotees were burnt while performing ritual rewalking at the Sri Siva Soobramoniar and Marriam-men Temples in Longmar-ket Street.

An of cial of the tem-ple who did not wish to be named told Public Eye that the special recipe used to create the re pit was changed this year, causing the wood to be hotter than normal.

According to eyewitnesses, over 1 000 people walked on hot wood as part of their Good Friday ritual, proving their faith in God, however tragedy struck when one man carrying crutches fell into the re pit raising alarm amongst the devotees and bystanders.

I have been going to the temple since I was a little baby. And I have seen and observed many prayers and cer-emonies that go on in the temple. There is a reason why we as dev-otees 'should not do' certain ritu-als after there has been a death in the family

If Mr Sunker has been fi re walking for many years, than surely he should know that he is not supposed to walk the fi re unless a year has passed since his wife's death. It is not a rule that was made and thrown in his face on that day. It has been there for years.

I feel that running to the papers for every little problem is petty and childish! Mr Naidoo didn't run

to the papers to complain about devotees. He spoke to Mr Sun-ker like a mature adult, which was the proper thing to do. Mr Sun-ker acted as if he was told never to put foot back in the temple. Noone stopped him from praying. It is putting our temples name down. Angry over insensitive remarks about Indians

Senzo Mchunu since becoming the ANC chairperson in Kwa-Zulu Natal just recently has created a wide gap and rift between Indians and the ANC. Who does Mchunu think he is?

Mchunu said We want them (referring to South African Indians) to understand the actual ANC and not the perceived ANC.

Does Mchunu know and understand who Indians really are? To give his words a little twist, Mchunu and the ANC should under-stand the actual Indians and not the per-ceived Indians.

He is the same ANC offi cial who said on Morning Live (TV 2) on 12 August 2008 that Indian people need an identity.

The comments made by Mchunu are a great embarrassment and lowers the dignity of all Indians. Even our indentured fore-bears were brought to South Africa as Indi-ans unlike some fortune seekers and for-eigners who enter South Africa illegally.

I sincerely hope that Mchunu and his ANC offi cials will upgrade their thinking capacity to manage our country effi ciently.

I am eighty years old and I remember this same remnant of the apartheid era whose fam-ily had an outfi tting shop in Church Street in the 60s when we used to go window shop-ping to see school outfi ts. They would shoo-shoo us out of the shop and even had separate counters for attending to us like dirt.

Regarding the issue of the book-ing of Bombay Civic Centre, last Saturday, allow me to set the record straight. I personally contacted the municipal offi cial responsible for hall bookings to reserve the Bombay Civic Centre for Saturday, to assist indigent resi-dents to fi ll in their application forms. This was necessary because Council had refused to accede to my request to extend the 15 April deadline.

A copy of both receipts is attached, acknowledging the hall was booked by me from 9am to 12 noon, and from 12 noon to 3 pm.

As per Council policy it was booked for " Meeting arranged by Councillors for a maximum of 3 hours per day, not ending later than 20h00 on weekdays, and between 8am and 13h00 on weekends, except for special Municipal projects."

This verifi es that the DA followed the

proper procedures to book the hall. The ANC councillors used their infl uence to double book the hall. The only reason the DA was outside, rather than inside, the hall, was to prevent a possible volatile alterca-tion taking place.

The DA's purpose on Saturday was to assist indigent residents.
