Tender saga deepens divisionsJust ten months after being recognised as one of the best run business chambers in

South Africa, the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB) is facing a leadership crisis marked by in-fi ghting, divisions in the board and a series of highly damaging allegations made in the national media against its president Paris Dlamini.

This week PCB chief executive offi cer Melanie Veness denied there were divisions in the organization but refused to make available minutes of various board meetings that Public Eye had requested.

The management board meetings are not public meetings. Some of the information contained in those minutes relates directly to individual members and is confi dential in natureYour email states there are serious divisions that threaten the unity and stability of the chamber. As far as I am concerned the chamber has never been as stable as it is currently, stated Veness.

A chamber member however made no bones about the divisions within the PCB board and areas of concerns that members have. These include:

1. The board being split on how to deal with the implications of the new Memorandum of Interest (MOI) which created a legal loophole for offi ce bearers to serve an additional two year term. Dlamini refused to voluntarily step aside. The chamber was forced into getting legal opinion on the matter;

2. Certain board members believed that greater governance checks were needed to ensure that serving presidents discharge their duties with more transparency and consultation with other offi ce bearers, and, that the post not be used for personal

gain;3. Some board members are

concerned that the CEO Melanie Veness had formed an alliance with Dlamini which resulted in her supporting the proposal which allowed the previous offi ce bearers to remain in offi ce instead of allowing a new board to be voted in;

4. Dlaminis involvement in an alleged R1.2 billion broadband contract with Msunduzi Municipality and the CEOs handling of the saga;

5. The PCB AGM being postponed because of a lack of membership turnout and proxies submitted;

6. The CEO stage-managing the second AGM which took place two days after a damaging Sunday Tribune article. Veness has been accused of insisting the meeting wrap up business swiftly and for not allowing members to raise any questions.

Responding to the above allegations Veness however says that the decision of the board, in respect of the MOI, was unanimous.

The decision of the Board was unanimous, as can be seen

by the (extract) of the minutes. The discussion was about the term of offi ce of board members and offi ce bearers, and not specifi cally about the Presidency. 50% of the Board (which includes all offi ce bearers) are serving the balance of a two year term. All offi ce bearers are serving a second term the fi rst term was one year (as per the MOA) and the second term is two years (as per the MOI). There is no third term, replied Veness.

A day after the damaging Sunday Tribune front page article on Dlaminis alleged involvement in a R1.2 billion broadband contract, the PCB called an emergency board meeting to discuss the matter. It is believed that Dlamini remained in the meeting and did not recuse himself to allow other board members to freely discuss the implications the article had on the PCBs reputation and integrity.

Veness this week said the meeting was not called to discuss the implications of the article but to approve the PCBs response.

The Board meeting was called to approve the press release. A further meeting to discuss the implications of the article was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, said Veness.

Sash Preamchand (28) of Odeon Terrace in Orient Height launched his label, Collaborative Entertainment, in 2011.

Currently he is working on an album launch in KZN for Danny K and DJ Cleo , and has worked with Lira. He has recently also taken on the role of publicist to international star, Mbongeni Ngema, creator of Sarafi na- the musical, and winner of 11 BETs and 4 Grammy awards. He is also co-managing Mandoza and is part of the organizing team on the singers reality TV show, Rolling with Mandoza. He is also a con-tent provider for 3 Talk, YoTv and Club 808.

So far, he has signed up South African personalities such as Clint Brink (Tino from eTV series Scan-dal), Jacqui Carpede from singing group Jamali and singing sensa-tion Leaveil Eaton to name a few.

The Raisethorpe Secondary matriciulant went into law after leaving school and spent six years at a local law fi rm before deciding to launch out in a new direction.

Success came in the fi rst year when eTV featured three of his artists in one week.

Like many older adults, Aunty Ambihad a hard time with arthritis and osteoporosis. Rather than waiting to get weaker, the 67 year old joined Contours Express 6 years ago. The Center for Disease Control and Pre-vention (CDC) analyzed the results of the 2001 National Health Interview Survey and

found that about 12 percent of seniors aged 65 to 74 years old are involved in resistance train-ing compared to 10 percent of persons over the age of 75.

Lack of leg strength is the number one rea-son that seniors are admitted to long-term care facili-ties, but by exercis-ing regularly, they can go from a bed to a wheelchair to a walker to a cane. Were always look-ing for the fountain of youth. Theres no such thing, but probably the clos-est youll get is strength training. It offers you the abil-ity to do things that you didnt think were possible.

Local sports vet-eran and jour-nalist, Jerry Barnes, has decided to offi cially mark his return home by staging a Com-munity Sports Day in Panorama on Septem-ber 28.

He has returned after spending eight years with a Johannesburg national

newspaper.I came back last year,

but I was still in and out of Gauteng province, sort-ing out personal matters. Im now offi cially and permanently back in my hometown, said Barnes.

I was surprised that here are a lot of people that still lack basic infor-mation about the elec-tions. We need to do more to educate them,, explained Barnes.

The one-day event kicks-off at 8am with a 2.5km fun run/walk around the neighbourhood . It will be followed by a series of matches starting at 10am when two local junior teams will lock horns, followed by ladies sides from Ward 34 and the KZN department of sports and culture.

Theres also a local derby between youth teams from the two com-

munities, Panorama Gar-dens and Panorama Park, separated by the main road. Old Timers (over 35s) will face a team from Mountain Rise Police Sta-tion.

Barnes says the day is to help raise funds to replace broken windows at Panorama Primary School and pay school fees for at least for one needy child.

Jerry Barnes organises community sports day in Panorama The late Kasaval Mood-ley (popularly known as Kercy) started his early

soccer career at Woodlands High School. He represented his school in inter-school matches and was selected for the Midlands team at Natal school sports level. He was also a very accomplished athlete.

Moodley left school in 1954 when the oppressive laws of the country, such as the Group Areas Act, were in place. He joined Thistle Football Club, a club which was formed by a commu-nity group from the lower end of Boom, Greyling and Retief streets in Pietermaritzburg.

Membership in Thistle FC was a privilege combined with respon-sibility. It meant assuming an obli-gation to perform with diligence and sincerity. As a consequence, players developed skills due to team spirit, dedication and training under very diffi cult circumstances. Moodley was chosen as the person most able to give effective leader-ship. As captain, he led Thistle to success and glory. The most nota-ble achievement was winning the coveted Natal and Manikum Cups. Moodley was fi rm, competent,

tactful and just.He was a specialist fi ve-a-side

player, with Thistles winning a number of tournaments which were played at the Fitzsimmons Grounds. Perhaps, Moodleys leg-endary status emerged in 1959 when he was selected to represent Northern Natal. He was part of that all-conquering team that won the Sam China Cup that year. That famous team also included the likes of Thiri Rampath, Bob Pil-lay, Dharam Mohan, Sam Pillay, Bal Satgoor among others.

Moodley was also selected to represent Natal.

Meanwhile, the Sports Veter-ans Association is in its fi nal stage in determining the awardees in the various categories, for the Awards Presentation Function. This event is scheduled to take place on 22 March 2014 at the Truro Hall. All awardees will be notifi ed in due course.
