TERRA-3000 is a liquid organic construction additive

that has been designed to greatly improve the strength

and water-resistance of in-situ soils used in pavement

construction and a wide range of other applications

such as tarmacs, dams, embankments, hardstands and

even brick production.

Description

02 TERRA-3000 SOIL STABILISATIONA liquid, water-soluble ion exchanger.

Scarcity of conventionalconstruction materials drives ourinnovative mission. TERRA-3000facilitates the use of in-situmaterials and the reuse of end-of-life materials, saving valuablequarried resources and minimisingenvironmental impacts. TERRA-3000 is an innovativeliquid ion exchanger (catalyst) thatreduces the surface tension of thewater around in-situ soil particlesso that the barrier film of watersurrounding the particles isdispersed.

When applied as directed,TERRA-3000 changes thechemical and physical propertiesof the treated material in such away that the soil attains a muchgreater strength and density thanwould be possible in its naturalstate. Capillary action is almostcompletely broken down. SinceTERRA-3000 works as a catalyst,it can't be washed out. After thephysical reaction has occurredduring compaction, less watercan accumulate in the treatedlayer. This reduces the swelling capacityand the internal moisture of thesoil.

Maximum possible compaction(leading to significant increase instrength) then becomes possible. The process is permanent andirreversible. Almost all soils aresuitable. Exceptions include puresand, and pure marshy groundwhich only contains humus. Theideal composition includes fine soilparticles of <0.002m of between15% and 30% by volume. TERRA-3000 is not an aggregate orbinding material like cement or lime, asphalt or salt. Instead, it need onlybe present in the soil to provide amore compact bedding and almostentirely prevent subsequentswelling.

Physical Properties

TERRA-3000 is a liquid. It has a milky brown colour, ismoderately acidic (pH = 6), and has an ammonia odour.Normal protective clothing is recommended when handlingTERRA-3000, but it is not known to cause skin irritation.

Ease of Use

The key elements to the successfulapplication of TERRA-3000 are ensuringthat sufficient contact occurs betweenTERRA-3000 and the material being treated, and that compaction occur soon afterapplication. In rural pavement construction, minimalchanges to traditional practices arenecessary. All it takes is the addition of theTERRA-3000 (at the right dilution rate) tothe watering of the road surface under repairand some attention to the grading and rollingprocess to ensure adequate mixing andcompaction.

Typically, TERRA-3000 Concentrate isdiluted in a ratio of 1:20 on-site duringtreatment. If there is a significant difference betweenthe Natural Moisture Content (NMC) andOptimal Moisture Content (OMC) forcompaction, or the climate is hot, then theTERRA-3000 Concentrate will likely bediluted in a ratio between 1:20 and 1:40. Aproject planning tool featuring a mix ratioestimator is available.

Performance Properties

Soils treated with TERRA-3000 exhibit highstrength and remain flexible. Soils treatedwith TERRA-3000 are never brittle. The most important factors for achieving analmost unlimited life span for a surfacetreated with TERRA-3000 are:

An ideal mix of soils, sands andaggregates with a minimum claypercentage of 15% and an evendistribution of grains and fines. Notehowever, that TERRA-3000 is suitable foruse in a wide range of conditionsincluding environments classified as highclay or high sand.Project planning and execution.Adequate mixing of TERRA-3000 atoptimal moisture content (OMC).Optimal compaction via static compaction(vibration may be used in a single passwhere unusually large aggregates remainpresent).

Typical test results using a light-weightdeflectometer (15kg) after application to atreatment depth of 250mm in pavementsrange from 60Mpa to 80Mpa. In general, a surface treated with TERRA-3000 will continue to improve with use dueto compaction. Damage may be caused by mechanicaldestruction and abrasion only. Water won'timpact the treated layer. For pavements, wear from mechanical load and abrasion islessened by a modest but optional wearingcourse. If no wearing course is presentabrasive wear should be even, withoutcorrugation or pot-holing.

TERRA-3000 in the Market

TERRA-3000 has a 30 year pedigree in Europe and around the world. Here in Australia, TERRA-3000 has been deployed with great success in numerous locations across the rural road network,as well as specialist applications in the urban environment.

Benefits and Advantages

EnvironmentalOrganic and non-toxic.No impact on flora or fauna. The use of in-situ soils reduces waste to landfill and conserves dwindling quarry resources.Fine materials are well distributed and more closely compacted in treated layers, reducing dust.

EconomicDramatically reduced maintenance requirements allows for rapid return on investment andextension of maintenance budgets deeper into the asset portfolio.Reduction of imported material saves in both material cost and transport cost.Significant increase in design life.Reduced and less expensive wearing course.Single solution for sub-base, base and wearing course.Minimal equipment requirements.Minimal adjustment to accepted civil construction techniques.

PerformanceReduces permeability and capillary rise.Reduced plasticity index (PI).Increases load capacity (CBR/EVD).Strength is gained by the improvement in compaction and loss of moisture.TERRA-3000 works in the widest range of climates and soil profiles.Simple application in the construction process.Treated soils remain workable until compacted.10 year shelf-life. May be premixed without loss of shelf life.Improves frost resistance.Resistance to ground water.Improves inferior soils and quarry waste for use as drop-in roads.Prevents softening of silts and clays during inundation.Reduces issues associated with rigid pavements.
