HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING MATERIAL

Welcome to the Module Preparing and Maintaining Beds . This module contains training materials and activities for you to complete.

The unit of competency Prepare and Maintain Beds contains knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a Health Care Services NC II Qualification.

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete each of the learning outcomes of the module. In every learning outcome there is a series of activities for you to follow. Follow these activities on your own and answer the Self-check at the end of each learning outcome.

Instruction Sheets: Information Sheets This will provide information you needed in performing certain activities. Job Sheets This is designed to guide you on how to do a job that will contribute to the attainment of the learning outcome.

Operation Sheets This will guide you in performing single task, operation or a process in a job.

Work Sheets Work sheets are different forms that you need to fill-up in certain activities that you perform.

Follow these activities on your own and answer the Self-Check at the end of each learning activity.

If you have questions, dont hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

Been working for some time

Already have completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so you dont have to do the same training again. If you have a qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous trainings show it to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to this module, they may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not sure about the currency of your skills, discuss it with your trainer.

INTRODUCTION:

This module deals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required in preparing and making beds and performing after-care activities.

Nominal Duration: 160 Hours

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Prepare area for bed making2. Make bed

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:1. Use of personal protective equipment according to institutional policy2. Adjust bed height as necessary

3. Clear the surroundings and other equipment before bed is strip. 4. Provide patient privacy, comfort and safety at all times

5 Place bed linen in appropriate area/container and check for displaced personal items, aids and equipment6 Strip bed linen necessarily.7. Remove and place clinical waste in appropriate container.8. Clean bed according to establish procedures necessarily.9. Place clean bed linen on bed in accordance with institution procedures

10. Reuse existing bed linen as needed

11. Ask patient whether he/she is comfortable, or if he/she has any prefer bed needs

12. Handle reusable clean bed linen in accordance with institution procedures

13. Clean and disinfect mattresses and pillows, in accordance with establish procedures

14. Adjust bed height for occupancy and brakes are apply according to bed type

15. Keep beds and equipment/ aids are accessible and bed is ready for occupancy16. Report damaged and/or faulty beds, equipment mattresses, pillows and linen to appropriate personnel and document accordingly.

17. Discard soiled linen and clinical wastes according to established protocol

18. Clean and return cleaning implements to designated storage areas or dispose appropriately

Definition of terms:1- Bed Making: The technique of preparing different types of bed making to patients / clients comfortable in his/ her suitable position for a particular condition.

2 Fanfold: Specifically folding the edge of the sheet used in the bed 6-8 inches outward. 3 Mitered corner: a means of anchoring sheet on mattresses. 4 Toe pleat: a fold made in the top bed clothes to provide additional space for patients toes. 5 Foot drop: plantar flexion of the foot with permanent contracture of the gastronomies (calf) muscle and tendon. 6 Bed cradle: is a curved, semi- circular made of metal that can be placed over a portion of the patient's body.7 Hospital bed: It's usually about 26-28 inches (65-70) cm above to floor. - The ideal hospital bed should be selected for its impact on patients comfort, safety, medical condition, and ability to change position. INFORMATION SHEET 1.1-1Prepare area for Bed MakingLearning Objectives: After reading this information sheet, you will be able to prepare area for bed making.Introduction: Patient rooms are furnished and equipped to help meet the persons basic needs. There is furniture and equipment for comfort, sleep, elimination, nutrition, personal hygiene, and activity. There is also equipment for communicating with members of the nursing team, relatives and friends. The individuals right to privacy is considered when equipping the room.

Patients in hospitals and residents of long-term care facilities spend a great deal of time in their rooms. Rooms may be private, occupied by one person; or semiprivate, furnished for two people. In either case, rooms should be comfortable and safe. There should be enough space for the individual to perform activities of daily living.

Purpose:

1. To promote clients comfort.

2. To provide a clean environment for the clients. 3. To prevent or avoid microorganisms to come in contact with the patient which could cause tribulations. 4. To know the basic bed positions.5. To help the patient describe the use of equipment found in a typical patient unit.6. ExplainGuidelines:1. Wash hand thoroughly before and after handling clients bed linen

- Helps to control nosocomial infection

2. Hold soiled linens away from the body.

- To avoid contact with nurses clothes and to avoid spreading micro-organism.

3. Linen for one client is never placed on another client's bed.

- To avoid transporting micro-organism from patient to patient

4. Soiled linens is placed directly in a portable linen hamper or tucked in to a pillow case at the end of the bed before it is gathered up for disposal in the linen hamper or in linen chute. Pillowcase is then tied and labeled with: name, room number, communicable/ non communicable.

- To limited the patient secretion and avoid contamination with other furniture.

5. Soiled linen is never shaken in air.

- To avoid spreading microorganism

6. When stripping and making a bed, conserve time and energy by stripping and making up one side as completely as possible before working on the other side

- To avoid time and energy waste.

7. Gather all needed linen before starting to strip the bed.

- To keep time, energy, and quality of work.

8. Move any furniture away from the bed

- To provide ample working space.

Common types of bed:

A- Occupied Bed: Is made when the patient is not able or not permitted to get out of the bed.

B- Unoccupied Bed: Is made when there is no patient confined in bed, while a patient in the shower or sitting up in a chair.

Types of unoccupied Bed:

1- Open bed: the top covers are folded back so the patient can easily get back in to bed.

2- Closed bed: the top sheet, blankets and bedspreads are drawn up to the head of the mattress and under the pillow; this is prepared in a hospital room before a new client is admitted to the room. 3- Post-operative bed: known as recovery bed or anesthetic bed, and used for a patient with large cast or other circumstance that would make it difficult for him to transfer easily into bed. Kinds of Linens

A- Blanket: a large piece of cloth often soft, woolen and is used for warmth as a bed cover.

B- Top sheet: used to cover the patient to provide warmth, made of thick cotton, thermal material. C- Cotton draw sheet: a piece of cloth that the rubber sheet and is used to absorb moisture. D- Bottom sheet: used to cover the bed after mattress cover.E- Rubber sheet: used to protect the bottom sheet from soothing due to patient secretions and prevent the patients from getting bedsore. It's usually placed over the center of the bottom sheet. Skills in Bed Making:

Stripping the Bed: Removal of used linen and the airing of the mattress. Procedure: Place chair at the foot of the bed.

Locked the bed.

Remove pillow case from pillow. Place pillow on chair. Loosen all bed linens starting at center of head of bed, raising the mattress with one hand and draw out bed clothes with other. Remove sheet separately. Fold each linen with soiled part inside. Wrap them all in a sheet and place on lower bar of the bed. Roll rubber sheet and place on chair. Remove mattress cover. Unoccupied Bed: Open bed

1. Refold each sheet according to its system of use.

2. Place clean linens on chair in order of use. See to it that the bed is flat.

3. Cover the mattress.

4. Place bottom sheet with center fold in center in line with rim of matters at foot part, spread across bed. Make mitered corner of head part, tuck extra sheet at side from head to foot.How to make a mitered corner:

Laying a triangular fold of sheet on the bed.

Tucking the end of the sheet under the mattress.

Pulling the triangular fold over the side of the mattress

5. Put rubber sheet 12-15 inches from the head of mattress. Cover with draw sheet. Spread across bed. Tuck together extra length.

6. Place top sheet in line with mattress at head part and spread across bed. Tuck extra length of sheet at foot part, mitered corner; allow hanging free at sides.

7. Go to opposite side and repeat same procedure.

8. Grasp one corner of top sheet, fanfold at foot part or diagonally to one side.Definition of terms:
