European case for Support

A framework for Action

PTPI Europe has identified a number of concrete opportunities for our organization, our members and

our communities. We need philanthropic support to make these opportunities a reality.

• When you arrive in a new location or if your circumstances have changed, finding out where to access

new communities, inexpensive products and services, or how to develop new opportunities for income

generating products and services, can be daunting.

• With our world moving at a faster and more disconnected way due to technology, busy schedules and

the frequency at which we change employment, houses and locations, it is harder to feel a sense of

community.

• People with an international mindset are looking for opportunities to engage in local projects and

activities, that bring benefits to where they live and bring benefits to the country that is home.

• It is said that it really helps to have a good place in which to anchor true community. It is also said that

community-building is an art with elusive goals.

The Hub will play a vital role to make concrete goals, manage progress and communicate outcomes.

The purpose of the PTPI Hub is to provide a physical space where our members can work, rest and play.

It is a space where we can share, learn and create together, and give to each other directly, without the

extra hassle of intermediaries. The PTPI Hub, designs, manages and facilitates networks and

partnerships which cultivate community-driven, multi-stakeholder projects that allow everyone to play a

role and contribute to a stronger society in Belgium.

In an age of interdependence, we strive to ensure that our social and business partners find our Hub a

respectable space, to anchor and showcase initiatives that highlight the role strong communities do

deliver. When communities are strong, inequalities and sources of conflict are reduced, and constraints

are removed to solution-finding.

The leadership team The PTPI Hub is supported by three community officers. Their role is to take a strategic view on

operations, provide an infrastructure to empower activities, and ensure strong leadership for all that the

Hub will represent. • John di Stefano • Andy Whittle • Chalks Corriette

Our main address: Avenue Jules Bordet 13, 1140 Brussels. There is parking available and public

transport access is good. The physical space is supported by the team from transforma bxl.

About PTPI

The concept of People to People International grew from U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s lifelong

crusade for peace. He believed that everyday citizens wanted a more peaceful world and could achieve it

more effectively without government interference.

The result was the launching of the “Peopleto People” initiative on September 11, 1956, under the U.S.

Information Agency. This program of “personal diplomacy” emphasized nongovernmental contacts

Page 7: PTPI Hub Case for Support EU final v0.5

between people. With his term of office nearing an end, Eisenhower sought a way for the organization to

be funded in the private sector. He engaged his good friend, J.C. Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards,

Inc., to help continue this valuable work. Hall agreed, and PTPI was incorporated as a nonprofit agency

in the State of Missouri on October 31, 1961, with the offices moving from Washington, D.C., to Kansas

City.

There has been a PTPI office in Brussels since 1970. Today, Brussels is proud to be the registered European HQ.

OUR MISSION is to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural,

and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among peoples of

different countries and diverse cultures.

OUR VISION is that a cross- cultural network of engaged and knowledgeable everyday citizen leaders

will be an active force in creating and sustaining a more peaceful world.

Our mission continues to resonate with members across the globe as we provide expanded opportunities

that engage a new generation of globally minded citizens.

With a presence in more than 160 countries, PTPI creates lasting cross-cultural connections between

citizens around the world to help them explore global issues, serve and enrich their diverse communities,

and become more effective leaders in creating a more peaceful world.

For 60 years, People to People International has served a unique and needed purpose: to connect

peopleto people through cross-cultural understanding and friendship. We are the only organization of

our kind; the clear leader in supporting people as they work together to impact communities, regions, and

nations. A history of success and unique experience distinguishes People to People International, and a

vision for the future drives us forward.
