Best practices identified: SUMMARY

PTP-Cycle does not only aim to deliver successful PTP programmes in the partner cities, but also to gather knowledge and evidence of transferable approaches which other cities can adopt to deliver their own PTPs in future. This process is therefore crucial to developing business cases for future PTP development. Please give as much detail as possible.

Please complete the summary table below with a sentence of each good practice that you saw during your visit, and which you might use back in your city PTP activities. For the best 2, please then complete the DETAIL table below.

Best Practice Summary table

1 Providing a bicycle maintenance tool box and training a member of staff (champion) within each participating business or organisation.

2 Participation of champions was particularly influential, especially the offer of guided cycle rides for employee’s commute to workplace.

3 Bicycle loan scheme encouraging potential cyclists to trial cycling with appropriate bicycle and accessories.

4 Partnership with Antwerp school of cycling.

Champion work/marketing

How is this approach taken by host city innovative / what makes it best practice?

Antwerp PTP-Cycle team offer bicycle maintenance training and provide the maintenance tool box for free for each business participating in the PTP-Cycle project. This is an excellent incentive to encourage businesses to actively participate in the PTP-Cycle project and provides a catalyst for the business to promote a cycling culture amongst staff, through the provision of the bicycle maintenance service (at no cost to the business), as part of the PTP package offered to staff.

Please give a brief but detailed description (100 words)

The Antwerp PTP-Cycle team offer each participating business the opportunity to train an employee (Champion) in cycle maintenance and provides the business with a cycle maintenance tool kit. This enables the business to offer staff a free bicycle maintenance service. This service will give staff added confidence to try cycling for their commute to work as well as providing an opportunity for the business to incentivise cycling.

How might you apply it in your city? (50 words)

This approach could be used within the PTP-Cycle household delivery in Haringey, through offering bicycle maintenance training and the tool kit to champions identified within the target residential neighbourhood and to participating schools and childcare centres. This approach could further engage parents and guardians of children attending these schools/childcare centres.

Champion work/marketing /fieldwork

How is this approach taken by host city innovative / best practice

Each participating business/organisation identifies a willing champion to promote the PTP-cycle scheme to colleagues, acting as a source of information and inspiration, especially focussing on the uptake and benefits of cycling. Offering staff guided cycle rides for their commute to work is a great incentive to encourage unconfident colleagues to try cycling and realise the benefits (health , financial, journey time and social) of cycling their daily commute to work.

Please give a brief description (50 words)

The in house champion offers guided cycle rides to other colleagues for their commute to work.

How might you apply it in your city? (50 words)

Guided cycle rides could be offered by resident champions to other residents within the household target area, to introduce them to quiet, pleasant and suitable local cycle routes , tailored to an individual’s needs and incentives to take up cycling (ie for health, financial, social, commuting reasons). Champions located within the workforce of local schools and childcare centres could also arrange guided bike rides for colleagues and parents. This could lead to set up of cycling buddies and groups of children, accompanied by parents cycling to schools, in similar fashion to walking bus initiatives.

Marketing/enhancing the project

How is this approach taken by host city innovative / what makes it best practice?

In order to encourage more people to cycle the host city is looking into the merits of a bike loan scheme. The approach is innovative and best practice because often a barrier to cycling is that people are afraid to make a purchase and then not use the bike or make the wrong purchase so this scheme will offer staff an option to prevent this barrier.

Please give a brief but detailed description (100 words)

The host city are planning to lease 200 bikes including electric bikes, folding bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes etc and offer these to staff within the selected workplaces to try for one month to see if they like it. This will be offered to employees hopefully from the summer months.

How might you apply it in your city? (50 words)

In Haringey we are looking into the merits of a bike loan scheme and the possibility of launching a small scale pilot scheme for residents around the time that the PTP project is launched - possibly within the selected PTP area. The scheme cannot be LIP funded but we have a small amount of S106 funding that we could possibly use for this.

Fieldwork/enhancing the project

How is this approach taken by host city innovative / best practice

The approach of matching people to bike together is innovative and best practise because again it addresses a real barrier to cycling in terms of people being unable to find their way, not feeling confident enough to cycle on their own etc.

Please give a brief description (50 words)

The host city offers guided rides by in-house champions to staff as well as matching people up together to bike together to and from work.

How might you apply it in your city? (50 words)

This could easily be applied in terms of Haringey’s PTP particularly within the schools and children’s centres by either having a champion in the school that offers a cycle bus or matching parents up who want their children to actively travel to school.
