Geographic Isolation

20 small island countries

Demographic Dispersion

Population of about 9 Million

Traditional Socio-economic Structures

Agriculture/Fishery based economies

Growing tourism industries

Political instability and ethnic tensions

in some countries

The increasing levels of youth

unemployment, and Emerging social

problems have raised questions about

the extent of poverty and hardship.

High levels of financial exclusion

Increasing poverty levels in the last

decade

Relatively poor economic performance

Unemployment

Pacific Island families are continuing to struggle as

unemployment rates among the Pacific community hits

14 % In just one year, 5000 additional Pacific Island

people have lost their jobs.

Mobile Penetration

About 60% of Pacific Islanders now have access to a

mobile phone and this figure continues to climb. In

Tonga, mobile penetration has risen from 3% in 2002 to

53% in 2011. Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu and New Caledonia

now enjoy mobile penetration rates of over 80%. In

2006 only 2% of PNG's population had access to a

mobile phone; today this figure is fast approaching

40%.

Mobile money in Pacific islands

Digicel’s ‘Mobile Money’ service offers customers a

range of mobile financial services, including the ability

to transfer money to friends and family nationwide and

pay utility bills through mobile phones. Mobile Money,

first launched in Fiji in July 2010, has now expanded to

Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. In

Samoa, Fiji and Tonga, an international service has

been added, which Digicel claims has slashed the cost

of inter-country remittances.

Banking Penetration

It is estimated that only 30% or less of Pacific Islanders

currently have access to basic financial services

making it the least banked region in the world.

POTENTIAL IN PACIFIC

Mobile money services have been launched in Fiji, Samoa and Tonga in the past year and PFIP data

shows that 25 percent to 30 percent of subscribers to the service don’t currently have bank accounts.

“Mobile money has the greatest potential in PNG of any country in the Pacific. The great need for a safer

way to move money, a young population and the fast rate at which people adapt to new technologies in PNG

creates a good environment for this service,” said Roest.

Currently Vodafone MPAiSA ,Digicel Mobile Money in partnership with Klick Ex launched web to

mobile wallet money transfer , covering the New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji corridor.

In the Pacific, around US$470 million was formally remitted to Forum island countries (FICs) in 2008.

The primary sources of remittances to the Pacific are Australia, New Zealand and the United States of

America. Across all remittance corridors to Pacific island countries surveyed, the average cost is 21.7 per cent

of the amount remitted when sent from Australia and 15.2 per cent when sent from New Zealand. It is

estimated that remitters to the Pacific pay at least US$90 million in remittance fees each year.
