Soil Water Content in 3 domains:EU 2km (top-left), MED 2.5km (top-right), NE 2.2km (bottom-right).EU & NE domains show no extra drying of soil in Advanced configuration, whether in point verification or domain mean. MED domain shows a quicker drying of soil in northern Israel.

• Main findings• All TERRA configurations exhibit similar performances,

no major differences between different target areas• All v5.05 TERRA configurations perform reasonably

(in particular no significant soil drying in advanced v5.05 … unlike what was observed at DWD)• Advanced v5.05 TERRA configuration is worse over Eu, better over Ru (in the night)• Decreased performance of TERRA (fluxes) with increased vegetation density

• Superior CLM fluxes do not translate into improved near surface temperature(model tuning targets TERRA, compensation of old aerosol climatology errors only in TERRA)

• Potential for model performance improvements through use of skin conductivity scheme (itype_canopy=2) and improved bare-soil evaporation (itype_evsl=4)(not tested in PT!)

• Some PTL recommendations for the COSMO community:• Verifying over several domains is highly recommended• A common robust verification package for the community is definitely needed

• Soil and surface fluxes verification is crucial to better understand physical processes
