Psychosomatic Disorder
Psychosomatic means mind (psyche) and body (soma). A psychosomatic disorder is a disease which involves both mind and body. Some physical diseases are thought to be particularly prone to be made worse by mental factors such as stress and anxiety.
Method
A descriptive-analytical research undertaken as a cross sectional study.
The study population consisted of doctors and nurses working in critical care units on morning, evening and night work shifts in Tehran Milad Hospital
The sample size was 160 doctors and nurses (95 female and 65 male).
Inclusion criteria included having the bachelor degree and
above in nursing major, also doctors
Exclusion criterion was an activity other
than patients care (e.g. records director or secretary).
Results
112 respondent (70%) had
severe stress
13 respondents (8.2%) had mild
stress
35 respondents (21.8 %)was
moderate stress
Therefore, it seems that there is a direct relationship between the mental pressure and psychosomatic
disorders of doctors and nurses
118 respondents have severe
symptoms (73,7%)
only 12 respondents have
mild symptoms (7.5%)
Discussion• The present study showed
that stress has direct and significant effect on the possibility for the diagnosis of doctors and nurses with various symptoms and psychosomatic disorders. The findings of this study are consistent with that of Nikpour, Nouri Tajer, Haqqani and Ravandi (2009), Sharifi nia, Haq Doust, Haji Hosseini and Hojjati (2011)
• This finding suggests that one way to control the onset and recurrence of psychosomatic disorders is to control of workplace stress and mental pressures that can reduce the morbidity associated with psychosomatic disorders.
