Reading Facial Expressions!

Page 2: Psychology project

Hypothesis

• I assume that Females ages 15 and over will be more accurate at decoding a person's facial expressions than Males that range 15 years and older.

Page 3: Psychology project

Subjects

• 52 subjects in total• Ages range from 15 to

85• Equal amount of males

and females • Subjects were chosen

randomly• Most subjects were in

groups when approached.

Page 4: Psychology project

Apparatus

• A survey was given to each subject.– Surveys are 18

questions each – Questions involved

were about being able to recognize facial expressions in both the eyes and the entire face of a person.

Page 5: Psychology project

Procedure

• Each individual was provided with a pen and a three page survey that consisted of 18 questions in total.

• The subjects age and gender were recorded at the beginning of the first page.

• The first two questions in the survey ask whether the individual looks at the eyes or the entire face when speaking with someone and whether the subject thinks he or she can determine how someone is feeling just by looking at them.

• The next 10 questions provided the subject with pictures of different individual eye expressions giving the subject four possibilities in a multiple choice format.

• The last 6 questions provided the subject with a picture of a persons entire face to determine specific facial emotions.

Procedure Cont..

• The first two questions were used to determine weather there is a difference between males and females and whether they look at a persons eyes or entire face when speaking.

• The next 10 questions helped me determine how accurate females/males were at determining expressions in peoples eyes

• the next 6 questions helped determine female/male differences in looking at a persons entire face expressions.

Results

•As we can see in the comparison between the male and female graph, the females had a higher number of correct answers overall.

Page 8: Psychology project

Results Cont..

• This graph shows a slight difference that males look more at eyes which determines that females look more at the entire face.

Page 9: Psychology project

Results Cont..

• This graph shows the comparison between male/female results of the eye expression multiple choice questions. It shows that the highest expression males recognize is fantasizing. While the highest for the females is desire.

Entire face expression results

• This graph shows that both males and females recognize the shocked expression more than the rest. The lowest recognized by women is

nervousness while the lowest recognized for men is boredom.
