May 2011

The 2011 PRIME Welcome Reception is right around the corner! It will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m. in Flipse 502. This year, Dr. Victoria Noriega will be welcoming 17 PRIME students and their mentors as they begin a summer of research.

PRIME (Psychology Research Initiatives Mentorship Experience) is the summer research program designed for students interested in pursuing careers in the psychological sciences. From 1999 – 2009, the program was funded through a grant by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and administered by the American Psychological Association to increase minority partici-pation in the psychobiological pipeline. The Provost at UM provided supplementary funds during that time to support all students interested in research. The program now continues under the auspices of the Fred C. and Helen Donn Flipse endowment to the Psychology Department.

In addition to PRIME, the Department also offers JUMPSTART (Just for University of Miami Psychology Students to Accelerate Research Training) to students who want to get going in research early in their academic careers (i.e., before having had statistics or experimental psychology. Full PRIME students are required to collect, analyze, and present results on original data at several conferences during the summer and coming year. JUMPSTART students are will work with their mentors to develop a line of research, will do a literature search on the topic, and will present a proposal for future research.

Both Full PRIME and JUMP START students will work closely with their mentors and will present a brief synopsis of their research at the PRIME Poster Session to be held on Friday July 29th. To get the most out of their summer research experience, students will also be assisted by other lab members, the Director, the graduate student coordinator, and other PRIME students.

2011 PRIME and JUMP START Summer Research Fellows

Research, Creativity, & Innovation Forum On Tuesday, March 29, students from every discipline met

to present their research projects at the 2011 Research, Creativity , and Innovation Forum.

Congrats to the following students!

This summer, 11 Neuroscience students will participate in the Lois Pope Under-graduate Summer Research Fellowship. Each student will participate in an intensive Neuroscience research experience in a research laboratory with a UM faculty member. Each student researcher will be given a $2,500 stipend and will spend at least 40 hours per week for 10 weeks doing full-time research. After completing the fellowship, students are to present their work at either the Research, Creativity, & Innovation Day Forum or the Neuroscience Day. Congratulations students!

UASP’s Lost & Found If you have lost something, please stop by our office to see if we have it. These items will be donated if they are not claimed by the end of the semester.

UASP Says Farewell Hats Off!

On Saturday, April 2nd, Team UASP participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. To raise money, UASP hosted Café UASP where the PALs sold hot coffee and bagels do- nated by Coral Bagels. The PALs also planted “bugs” in the offices of Faculty and Staff in Flipse which would be removed and relo- cated by a PAL after a donation of at least $1. Several of the PALs participated in the onsite activities, which included wing and pie eating contests, corn hole, twister, bubble gum chewing contest, a relay and tug of war. Dr. Noriega and Sean Kilpatrick were both

put in “jail,” one of the many onsite fundraisers. UASP’s on site fundraiser included a friendship ring toss and a chance drawing for an opportunity to win two 50-yardline football tickets to the Kansas State game this fall, kindly donated by President Shalala. Congratulations to Kim Reyes, an Engineering student, for winning the grand prize! The Psychology Department also generously matched our first $300 in fundraising, bringing the UASP total to over $1,400! Special thanks to PALs Ross Feldgreber and Christine Pao, who were on the Relay for Life planning committee, for all their help throughout the event. Thanks also goes to Team UASP captain, Alida Lambert for all her hard work. On behalf of UASP, thanks to everyone for you support!

“Team UASP” Supports Relay for Life

Every year, UASP must bid farewell to our senior Peer Ad-vising Liaisons (PALs), who have been the backbone of our comprehensive advising operation. PALS serve as the first point of contact, prepare students for their advising sessions, and work with our new students in the FACT FORUM and TUMS programs.

Having built strong relationships with each one, it will be difficult to say goodbye, but know they will keep in touch! Please join us as we congratulate our senior PALs on their achievement:

Alida Lambert plans to work as a research assistant before she applies to graduate programs in psychology.

Charlie Levinson will return home to St. Louis, Missouri, where he has accepted a position with College Bound (through AmeriCorps) to help under-resourced high school students prepare for, matriculate into, and complete a college degree.

Christine Pao chose to remain at the University of Miami to pursue her M.D. at the Miller School of Medicine.

Jennifer LeMay accepted a research position with Dr. Anibal Gutierrez in the UM Department of Psychology where she will work for one year as she applies to medical school.

Jessica Weiss plans to attend the University of South Florida for a Master’s in Medical Sciences and apply to medical school in the future.

Kiara Wesley accepted an offer to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

Michael Sheffield will work as a research assistant and apply to psychology graduate programs in the future.

Ross Feldgreber will attend the College of Veterinary Medicine at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he will pursue his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.

Stephanie Novotny will pursue her Ph.D. in Human Development at the University of California, Davis, working under Dr. Peter Mundy.

We wish you all a ton of success and only the best in the future!

Adam Margol, former Peer Advising Liaison plans to pursue his Psy.D. at George Washington University. Good luck Adam!

Amelia Rowley, recent graduate and former Peer Advising Liaison, will be pursuing her Psy.D. at Nova Southeastern University. Best wishes Amelia!

Recent graduate Catherine Hoeppner has been shadowing at the Judeo Christian Health Clinic in Tampa Bay while finishing premedical courses. Catherine has put her study abroad experience in Granada Spain to good use by translating between patients and doctors. She is planning on applying to medical school this fall.

Junior Psychology and Political Science double major Melanie Baez will be interning with the New York City Commis-sion on Human Rights this summer. The Commission does as much as possible to enforce Human Rights laws and educate New Yorkers about them through forums and events.

Marytery Fajardo, a former Psychology Peer Advisor and current medical student at the Miller School of Medicine was recently tapped into Iron Arrow, the highest honor at UM! Congratulations!

Congratulations to Jennifer Hughes who after spending time doing research at Brown University will pursue her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tennessee.

The Undergraduate Neuroscience Society President’s Message

By: Dale Brown

Congratulations to everyone for persevering through another semester of classes! We’ve pushed through those last-minute projects and late-night cramming sessions; we’ve made it to the finish line. It’s time to dive straight into summer! I would like to introduce myself as President of The Undergraduate Neuroscience Society (TUNS) for this upcoming academic year. TUNS is a student-run organization for individuals interested in Neuroscience and Psychology. At our meetings we hold seminars by leading faculty, scientists, and medical doctors, have round-table discussions on current research, participate in neurological service projects, and foster a mentor program, among other activities. Our speakers are a defining component to the club, and provide invaluable networking opportunities. From these presentations, numerous members (including myself) have been inspired by and found the researchers with whom they want to work. Thanks to our former President, Matt Sacino, we have hosted many great speakers this past year, such as: Dr. Vance Lemmon with his work on axon growth guidance, Dr. Coleen Atkins with her work on traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg with his work on developmental control of axon growth, and Marc Buonticonti, President and Co-founder of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. We have also enjoyed our continued participation in the annual Miami Brain Fair. Thanks to Dr. McCabe, our faculty advisor, and the Psychology Department, everyone is able to enjoy a full FREE year of membership! If you are interested in graduate or medical school, or simply want to be a leader in the field of neuroscience, please join us for the upcoming year. I look forward to seeing each of you in the fall. I have big ideas for our organization and plan to expand to more events, more speakers, and a greater presence in the University and local communities. If you have any questions or want to be added to the list-serve, please email [email protected], or contact me directly at [email protected].
