CHAPTER:1

SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY.

The roots of social psychology: SOCIAL FACILITATION.

“In 1898 Norman Triplett noted that competitive cyclists

performed better during races than during solo rides”

-Based on the consequent approved research figuring that

performance is enhanced in the presence of others.

From my past and fresh experience I have noticed that

sometimes when I use to have a group or even individual

project to work on I certainly do my best, contribute the

maximum of myself for the following reasons:

-The first one is certainly to have good marks and to be

able to contribute fairly to the team. Secondly is to provide

Page 3: Psychology journal

and share my skills, putting them into practice so that I

may distinct and compete with others. Resulting to a good

impression of me, gain respect and eager them to work

with me.

-Nevertheless among the above examples, the most

contradicting and weird one is that I do this for a girl in

class. It’s not about showing off but to impress her by

standing out of the rest. Being in the same class this

motivates me to enhance my performance and forces

myself to go beyond my limit. Referring to the point of view

of Norman Triplett saying that our performance increased

in the presence of others describe fully my case through

which there is an automatic upgrade and strengthen in my

attainment.

SOCIAL LOAFING VS SOCIAL FACILITATION.

“Social facilitation occurs when people are performing in

the presence of others yet their individual contributions can

be indentified”.

-Through my studies I have noticed and realized

something which is mostly related to the SOCIAL

LOAFING concept. The fact is that when we have share

the tasks in a group assessment and most of the time

those who is given the task of working on the researches

part seems to be unidentified as we know doing

researches are quite complex to be able to extract exact

information to meet the requirements.

Page 6: Psychology journal

-This happens also when we got a simple task of

searching for images for a project work, even this seems to

be an easy and less time consuming task as copy and

paste. But while doing so we can remark that we became

very confusing through the numerous selections of photos.

Sometimes it takes an incredible time that we cannot

expect and realize. The effort of doing this task is not

identified as the others were not there to witness it.

-Related to the SOCIAL FACILITATION and to my past

experience as mentioned above about the SOCIAL

LOAFING, I have remarked I more thing, it was during the

end of my semester 1, when I was doing my final project

working till overnight in the studio we can clearly

Page 7: Psychology journal

supervise, evaluate and witness every single contribution

of others distinctively.

THE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OF SOCIAL

PSYCHOLOGY.

SOCIAL COGNITIVE PERSPECTIVE & SOCIAL

LEARNING PERSPECTIVE.

-Being someone who use to observe a lot and I can permit

myself to say that I can understand someone just through

observing his behavior, attitudes and actions. I also know

that I’m not the only one who is like this. But it’s not the

correct way to have a crystal clear image or impression on

someone. We can be mistaken or misunderstood, and

create doubt doesn’t exist. It mostly happens by pessimists

people.

-Another fact is when I am among friends who are known

to have bad reputation and habits, others can think that I

Page 9: Psychology journal

also have and cultivate the same manners. Last but not

least I remember when I use to smoke cigarette with

friends when chilling, I have noticed that at this moment we

were only among smokers. I think that the other who

doesn’t smoke are scared to be among us just because

they think they can be observed and criticized by others.

-Similarly it also happens that some individual due to peer

pressure or if ever they have admire a behavior or lifestyle

of someone they are more prompt to imitate and adopt it.

An example of this is that I use to observe and stare a girl

in class because I admire her and like her. Gradually I

noticed that I started behaving like her, adopting the same

manners and attitudes.

CHAPTER 2:

IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT

IN WHAT WAYS CAN WE INFLUENCE HOW OTHERS

THINK OF US?

(INGRATIATION)

- Controlling others’ impressions of us through flattery.

-Through my observation and analysis’ between the other

student and some tutors in my class I have noticed that the

fact of flattering others is a good method of making them

having good impression on us. The concept of

INGRATIATION really works. This is how some of my

friends are closer to some tutors and they got additional

privileges which is not fair. Those who use to use flattery to

Page 11: Psychology journal

gain good impression I must say they are deep in their

role. Even though they know it’s a fake complement that

they have to improvise just to gain privileges, respect and

good impression on them. For example three weeks before

we were having our Exhibition for Introduction to Design in

CODA and we were assessed by our tutors for our work.

-The tutors were very harsh and strict with each group as it

was a very important presentation and the tutors were

expecting a very high outcome from us. Everyone was

very tensed by the behavior and attitudes of the tutors.

-At this moment there was a group who has use the same

concept of Ingratiation(Impression management) by

providing each tutor a starbucks Coffee with sweet words

Page 12: Psychology journal

written on each cup. They were trying to grasp the full

attention of the tutors by developing a good relationship

sometimes it may be a fake flattery that im sure they

improvise to produce a good image of them for their vested

interest.

UNREALISTIC OPTIMISM.

-The concept of unrealistic optimism explained about the

‘tendency to imagine that our own outcome are better than

those of other people’.For this concept that had happened

in my past experience was I had thought that I drew better

than my other colleagues.

-when it comes to the briefing of the new project I will smile

and praised myself in front of my colleagues and said that

my drawing will get the highest mark in class. Due to my

skill in drawing I certainly believed that the drawing that I

will produced will become the best since I started to draw

in kindergarten.

-The skills that I had applied in the drawing is a special

kind of technique that no one can master without working

as hard as me. I believed that the unrealistic optimism

Page 14: Psychology journal

concept had applied when I finished my assignment and

showed to my colleagues. That day I was quite

disappointed because I noticed that others was also on the

same level as me and a few was even better.
