CourseDescriptionInthiscourse,wewillfocusonthebiologicalmechanismsinformingPsychology,NeuroscienceandBehaviour.Inthefirsthalfofthecourse,ourresearchframeworkwillexamineseverallevelsofanalysis(Development,Evolution,andNeuroscience).Inthesecondhalfofthecourse,wewillapplytheseanalysestoSensorySystemsandCriticalBehaviours.IncombinationwithPsych1X03/1N03,studentswillemergewiththeappropriatecontext,terminology,andskillstospecificallysupportexplorationoffurthercoursesinPsychology,NeuroscienceandBehaviour.However,theseareskillsthatwillalsotransferwelltoanydisciplineyoupursue!

ANoteAboutTestsWithpracticequestionsinthishandbook,TutorialBonusPointquestions,Pre-QuizandQuizzes,youmightbewondering“whyaretheresomanytests?!”.Thesimpleansweristhattestinghasbeenshowntobethemosteffectivewaytolearninformationinthelongterm.Retrieval-EnhancedLearningManystudentsviewtestingasanegativenecessityoftheircoursesandwouldprefertohaveasfewtestsaspossible.Thinkingabouttestingthiswayisduetoyearsofexperiencingtestsasahigh-stakesassessmentoflearning.Thisisunfortunategiventhattestingimproveslearning.Overthepasthundredyearsresearchonthecharacteristicsofhumanlearningandmemoryhasdemonstratedthatpracticetestingenhanceslearningandretentionofinformation(e.g.,Dunloskyetal.,2013;Roediger&Karpicke,2006a).Practicetestingcantakemanyforms.Itcanrefertopracticingyourrecallofinformationbyusingofflashcards,completingpracticeproblemsorquestionsinatextbook,orcompletinglow-stakestestsaspartofacourserequirement.ThisprinciplewastheprimarymotivationforredesigningtheMacIntroPsychcoursetohaveweekly,lowstakesquizzes.AnexcellentexampleofthepoweroftestingmemorycomesfromastudybyRoedigerandKarpicke(2006b),whereinundergraduatestudentswerepresentedwithshort,educationallyrelevanttextsforinitialstudy.Followinginitialstudystudentseitherstudiedthematerialagain,ortookapracticetest.Afinaltestwastakenafterashortretentioninterval(5minutes)orlongretentioninterval(2days).Afterashortretentionintervalrestudyingproducedbetterrecallthantesting(81%vs.75%).However,withthelongretentionintervaltestingproducedsignificantlybetterrecallthanrestudying(68%vs.54%).Thus,aftertwodaysperformancedeclined27%forstudentswhorestudiedthematerial,butonly7%forstudentsthatpracticedrecall.Interestingly,providingstudentswiththecorrectanswerfeedbackafteratestenhancesthepositiveeffectoftesting.Withfeedback,learnersareabletocorrecterrors,andmaintaintheircorrectresponses.Moreover,takingatestandreviewingfeedbackcanenhancefuturestudysessions.Researchshowsthatwhenastudenttakesatestbeforerestudyingmaterial,theylearnmorefromtherestudyingsessionthaniftheyrestudywithouttakingatestbeforehand(e.g.,Karpicke,2009).Thisiscalledtest-potentiatedlearning.WhydoestestingimproveretentionofinformationandhowcanIuseit?Explanationsforthepositiveeffectsoftestingfocusonhowtheactofretrievalaffectsmemory.Specifically,itissuggestedthatretrievinginformationleadstoanelaborationofmemorytracesandthecreationofadditionalretrievalpaths.Togetherthesechangestomemorysystemsmakeitmorelikelythattheinformationwillbesuccessfullyretrievedagaininthefuture.Thissuggeststhattestingisnotjustanassessmenttool,butalsoaneffectivelearningtool.AsastudentinthiscourseyoucantakeadvantageofretrievalenhancedlearningeachweekinpreparationforyourweeklyQuiz.Thisbeginswithstudyingwebmodulecontentearlyintheweek(e.g.,SundayorMonday).Youcanthenengageinretrievalpracticeasaformofreviewafteryourinitialstudysession.AtthispointyoushouldbereadytocompletethePre-quizandreviewthefeedback(byWednesdayorThursday).Thisgivesyoutheopportunitytotakeadvantageoftest-potentiatedlearningwhenyoureviewcontentagainbeforecompletingyourQuizonFriday.Thissuggestedscheduleofstudying,andincorporationofretrievalpracticewillhelpyoulearnandretainthecoursecontent.Engaginginthisprocesseachweekenhancesyourlong-termmemoryforcoursecontentandthereforeadvancesyourpreparationsforthefinalexam!Suggestedfurtherreading:
