DESIGNING AN
EXPERIMENT
You will have to design carry out and write up a report on one of the
selected studies
Social Psychology ndash Relationships
theories of formation
bull One explanation as to how relationships form is physical attraction The matching hypothesis suggests we actually seek a partner whose physical attractiveness matches our own physical attractiveness This is likely because even though we find physically attractive people most attractive we go for a compromise When selecting a potential partner in order to avoid rejection
bull Murstein (1972) tested the lsquoMatching Hypothesisrsquo asked couples who were engaged or going steady to rate their own and their partners attractiveness on a 5 point scale Independent judges also rated the PP attractiveness The similarity ratings for couples were compared with ratings made of randomly paired couples Murstein found real couples significantly more similar than the randomly paired couples
Social Psychology- Social
cognition Attribution
bull The self-serving bias suggests that no one wants to admit to being incompetent and are likely to blame failures on something external to ourselves This protects our self-esteem However we are happy to take credit for our success
bull Positively valued outcomes are more attributed to the person and known as lsquoInternal attributionsrsquo ie I did well in my exam because I worked really hard
bull Negatively valued outcomes are attributed to situational factors known as lsquoexternal attributionsrsquo ie I did not do well in my exams because I didnrsquot have a very good teacher
bull Lau and Russell (1980) carried out a Quasi-experiment (no direct participation of individuals and based on naturally occurring events so no control over the IV)
bull They studied sports pages to examine whether or not managers or players explained their success (winning the game) to internal attributions and their failures (losing the game) to external attributions
bull They predicted that there would be greater tendency to attribute success internally and failure externally The results supported that there were more internal attribution made to winning games
EATING BEHAVIOUR- the effects of mood and eating preferences
bull Food is a trigger of mood We are conditioned to eat foods that make us feel good when we are low Many people do eat in response to negative moods and stress
bull Macht and Mueller (2007) wanted to know if eating chocolate would immediately improve mood
bull They recruited 48 volunteers all whom said they like chocolate
bull Volunteers had to report their mood They watched one of three film clips ndash sad happy neutral
bull After viewing the clips volunteers reported their moods had changed
bull Each was split into the water or chocolate group They had to report their moods
bull It was found that if the film clip was sad then eating chocolate improved mood For the happy film there was no improvement and for the neutral movie there was no significant effect
bull Overall emotional eaters get a big boost from eating chocolate
Designing your investigation
bull Groups no bigger than 3
bull 1 What are the aims of your experiment ndash what do you intend to do
bull 2 What is the alternative hypothesis ( what are you predicting Is it directional or non-directional )
bull 3 what is the accompanying null hypothesis ( this is a statement of no differences)
bull 4 Does your investigation have variables ie IV and DV ndash state what they are
bull 5 Which method are you using (ie Lab field correlation etc)
bull 6 Which design have you opted for (independent repeated or matched pairs)
bull 7 Who are your participants How old how many which year group how have you sampled them ie Opportunity volunteer and how allocated ie Random etc
bull 8 which materials apparatus will you need to carry out the study
bull 9 What are you controlling How do you make sure your study is valid
bull 10 you must write down any ethical issues and how they are being met
bull 11 what are the procedures involved Step by step guide as to what you will be doing and what your pp will be doing Are there any special instructions
WRITING UP YOUR INVESTIGATION
