FNBE 02/14 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY ASSIGNMENT 3 PG 1

Introduction

According Gordon Willard Allport, an American psychologist, social psychology is

a discipline that uses scientific methods "to understand and explain how the thought,

feeling and behaviour of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied

presence of other human beings" (1985). Social psychology is all around us, as we to

observe and identify ourselves and the others.

The purpose of this project is to analyze, identify various concept we learnt in social

psychology class and present our understanding of our chosen concept through a video

clip. This project consisted of 3 components, which include a video clip, a report regarding

the video clip and a presentation of the video. We are required to produce a video clip

with a minimum of 5 social psychology concepts apply in the storyline.

Inspired by some local production videos made by the Youtubers such as

DanKhooProductions and JinnyBoyTV, the theme of our video is about the interaction of

the lecturers and the students. The storyline of our video is very much related to our daily

life experience in university life. The psychology concepts and perspective we

incorporated in the video clip are impression management, first impression, non-verbal

cues, confirmation bias and stereotype.

This report record our understanding on the concepts and explanation on how we

incorporate these concepts into our video.

Discussion

In our video, we had incorporated 5 concepts, which some involved a few sub concepts.

The main concepts involved in our videos are Stereotype, Confirmation Bias, Non Verbal

Cues, First Impression, and Impression Management. Because our video is a

comparative attitude and behaviour between lecturers and the students, each party is

involved in one sub concept of the main concept.

Confirmation Bias

The second concept is confirmation bias. It means that one only pays attention to

information that go with their belief and disregard those that doesn’t. Both the scenes in

our video only involved the main concept and did not corporate any sub concepts.

For the first scene shows the lecturer’s confirmation bias. The lecturer (Roy) is checking

the student’s (Marcus) project, but had showed no interest in hearing the student’s

explanation, as all of them are not disapproved by him.

In the second scene is about a student’s confirmation bias. It also shows a student (Pei

Shan) showing her model to the lecturer (Marcus), where initially the lecturer was not

approving her model, and had kept on criticizing her work, where all she did was sitting

there, doing other stuff and not listening to the lecturer. But then after the lecturer’s long

explanation about disapproving her work, he suddenly said “actually it was quite good”,

and then the student shot up straight and began listening to the lecturer again. But as

soon as the lecturer continued with a “but”, the student began to ignore him again.

First Impression

Our fourth concept is first impression, which means one’s impression towards others upon

meeting the first time. First impression is not deliberate, and happened almost

instantaneously after only 0.1 seconds. They are formed by just watching them purely,

and not by watching their actions. There are a few forms of first impression, like the

primacy and regency effect.

In our first scene we emphasized on the lecturer’s first impression towards the students.

It was in a new class where the lecturer (Kayla) watch her student’s attire and appearance

and formed her impression on them. For example, a good looking student (Marcus) in tidy

attire and prepared with his studying materials came in, and instantly it made the lecturer

FNBE 02/14 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY ASSIGNMENT 3 PG 8

created an impression that he is good looking and should be a good student. Then

another student (Sham) came in wearing messily and brought nothing to the class,

making the lecturer think that he should be a disapproving student. And lastly coming in

was a student (Pei Shan) who brought a Mac book and 3 IPhones to class, making the

lecturer think that she should be a rich girl.

The primacy effect means the first information you receive about a person has the most

impact on how you will remember them. In our second scene showed students’ first

impression on a new lecturer. A new lecturer (Sham) came into the class and told the

students that he was the new lecturer, but he was wearing a very informal attire like

slippers and tee shirts. While the lecturer was teaching in class, one of the student (Roy)

was sitting, thinking to himself, criticizing the lecturer, like his attire and his attitude. After

the class ended, the lecturer informally dismissed the class, as the other two students

(Kayla and Pei Shan) began saying out loud about how they think the lecturer is not

agreeable, as the first student (Roy) cut in and tell each other about their first impression

of the lecturer.

Non Verbal Cues

The third concept is non-verbal cue, which are the behaviours, gestures and expressions

conveying one’s thought without any words spoken. This concept can be divided into

some sub concepts, like facial expression and body gestures.

The facial expressions in non-verbal cues means that making different kinds of

expression showing how they think upon something or someone. In our first scene shows

a lecturer’s non-verbal cues. A student (Marcus) is doing his presentation, when the

lecturer (Kayla) began making faces throughout the presentation of approving, surprise,

disgust, contempt and so on.

Meanwhile, body gestures are non-verbal cues involving actions and movements to

convey the meaning without words. In our second scene shows the student’s non-verbal

cues. The lecturer (Marcus) came into the class and said that he’s giving the students a

new assignment, where all the students began showing their attitudes through non-verbal

cues, like the first student (Pei Shan) began rumbling her hair in annoyed, the second

(Kayla) who throw her hand up in anger and then lied back on the table to sleep, and

thirdly (Sham) who kept his anger and wanted to flip the table but did not.

FNBE 02/14 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY ASSIGNMENT 3 PG 9

Impression Management

Our last concept is impression management. It means ways to influence how others think

of someone or something or towards oneself. This process can happen consciously or in

subconscious. This concept has several different scenarios, two of them are the spotlight

effect and ingratiation.

The spotlight effect is when one thinks that everything about themselves is obvious to

others, like their thoughts, behaviour, appearance and more. In our first scene it shows a

lecturer’s spotlight effect. The lecturer (Roy) just bought a new IPhone 6 and thought that

if his students (Sham, Kayla and Pei Shan) saw his new phone, they will be really

impressed and envy of him. But in reality when he entered the classroom and tried to

show off his phone, all the students were not impressed and just treat it as a normal day.

Ingratiation is when one impress another by flattering them. In the second scene shows

a student ingratiating the lecturer. When the student (Roy) saw the lecturer (Marcus)

having several troubles, he did not hesitate to help the lecturer like picking up his pen,

helping him tie his untied shoelace, and treating him to a meal.

Stereotype

Our first concept is stereotype, which means an overly generalized belief about a

particular group of people. It can be of positive or negative connotations. Stereotype can

be distinguished into 3 sub concepts, which is racism, sexism, and ageism.

In the video, the lecturer shows a stereotypical attitude towards the students. There is a

few new international students in the class, and as they were introduced, the lecturer

began insulting them through some stereotypical facts of their nationality, out loud in front

of the class, making the students feel awkward and speechless. For example, the lecturer

assumed that the Singaporean student will be a very egotistical person, and a Korean

student, who without doubt, has done various plastic surgery operations.

On the other hand, sexism is the discrimination towards a certain gender. In our video,

the students had showed sexism. Both different genders had pointed out the negativities

of the other gender, showing that they all had a disagreement towards the opposite

gender. For example, Kayla had stated that all guys are brainless and stupid, Pei Shan

said that all guys are gross, whereas Roy said that girls get angry for nothing, and Sham

said that all girls are dumb.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, we are able to recognize and identify the connections among

concepts and perspectives within psychology and with other disciplines. Especially

making of this video, we manage to relate the components we learnt in social psychology

to our real life experiences. Throughout the relentless process of analysis, reflection and

evaluation, we developed from concepts, ideas to implementation of the video clip.

Besides, we learned to present a video in a creative way which we inspired by

Youtubers’ video. We have learned to shoot a video in different perspective. Although

acting is a little bit hard for us, we have tried our best to perform well in the video. At last,

we managed to finish the video in time. We also learned how to edit a video using different

software such as Premiere Pro and I Movie which is the most convenient and easiest way

to edit a video.

In conclusion, this is a good experience for us to learn about social psychology

theories. Besides, understanding more on the concepts, we make a lot of fun in video

shooting.
