    LOCAL NEWS

THE NEW SHAKE SHACKand use it to create bio-diesel. Theyrecycle it and also use it to makeother products that can be reused. We try to have recyclable, compostable, bio-degradable paperproducts whenever possible in therestaurant. We compost for all of ourfood products. We also purchasewind electricity and pay a little bitmore for our electricity.

Finally, you can expect to the ShakeShack open in the middle of June, ifeverything goes well, said Mr.Vandegrift. Early July is our bestbet.

    By James G.

Theres a new Shake Shack coming tothe Upper East Side. This ShakeShack will be located on East 86th

Street between Lexington and ThirdAvenue. Many kids from P.S. 6 willknow where this is, because it is nextto the new Barnes & Noble store.

I went to the public board meeting atHunter College to learn more aboutthe new Shake Shack. I talked to JohnVandegrift, Director of Operations,New York Region, for Shake Shack. He was at the meeting to get approvalfor the new location and show theirplans from the board. Here are some basic facts about thenew Shake Shack:

Hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 12midnight, seven days a weekCan seat 146 people.Serves beer and wine but no liquor.

I asked Mr. Vandegrift why his

company wanted to put a ShakeShack at 86th Street.

We thought that the Upper East Sidewas a good next move for ShakeShack, he said. Its a busy area andthere are lots of families, a lot ofschools and kids in the neighborhood, and we thought it was a good place thatreally needed a Shake Shack.

I asked him how he expected tocompete with the fast food restaurantsnearby, like Burger King andMcDonalds. We arent looking tocompete with them, he said. I think wehave a different product that we offer. They are great at what they do and wethink we are great at what we do. Weoffer a slightly higher quality productand are a little bit slower than a fastfood restaurant. The Shake Shack is

also a great place to hang out andrelax. We have the best custards, thebest shakes, and the best ice cream intown.

One of the questions about restaurantsis what they do with all the waste they

produce. We work with a company thatactually comes and takes our waste, said Mr. Vandegrift. They take our oil

    MIA HAMM: SOCCER STAR

    Page 11

By Bess D. and Hayley R.

I think we all know who Mia Hammis right? Well if you dont she is thefastest, strongest, and has scored

the most goals in womans soccerhistory. Not only is she a greatsoccer player but...she went througha lot in her early days.

One day in 1973, on the sidelines of

a soccer field in Italy, a very youngAmerican girl sat with her family andwatched the big boys play soccer. No one in her family understood thegame very well but they still enjoyedthe pitter patter of the players feettouching the grassy field, the pig

pong sound the ball made when it hitthe players foot, and just the timethey took to spend with their family.Mia laid her precious little head on alap: it was her brother Garrett.Garrett was Mias favorite personEVER! She would love to spendtime with him and play with him. Imean he was a pretty cool olderbrother.

Garrett was also adopted and hehad a disease. Garrett wasdiagnosed with a rare Bone Marrowdisease.

In the early 1980s Mia Hamm triedout for her college soccer team. MiaFelt confidant when she stepped onthe field unlike other girls who werenervous to even tryout. CoachDorrance was impressed with Mias

confidence, her professional skillsand her lightening fast speed.Around that time Mia was veryhappyUntil Garrett died, and Miafelt her life was over! Then MiaHamm graduated from theUniversity of North Carolina in 1994with a degree in political science.

Later in Mias life she became a prosoccer player in the womens MLS.She was very successful at that timeand she was the most valuable

player in the MLS. Mia Hamm hadan AMAZING exciting life.

    WING NUTSBy Marina T.

The wing nut is something that goes on to a screw. The Nut iscalled the wing nut because it has little wings on it.

    This is a wing nut:

The wing nuts maker/creator is unknown, the nuts is: HenryMaudslay. The wing nut has wings and that makes them prettyeaser to come undone, also it can be removed without tools.

    RECIPE OF THE MONTH

    CHOCOLATE MINT PILLOWS

    Page 13

    By Helena C.Ingredients:1 cup (250 ml) sugar1 cup (250 ml) butter or margarine, softened1 egg1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla3 cups (750 ml) all-purpose flour1 teaspoon (5 ml) baking powder

1 fourth of a teaspoon (1 ml) salt49 chocolate sandwich mints

Directions:Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200degrees Celsius ). In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar, butter, egg and vanilla. Beatat medium speed of an electric mixer untillight and fluffy. Add flour, baking powder andsalt. Beat at slow speed until soft doughforms. Divide dough in half. On well-flouredsurface, roll half of dough into 13x9-inch(33x23 cm) rectangle. Discard top sheet ofwax paper. Carefully turn second rectangleover mint-topped dough, matching edges.Using scalloped pastry wheel, cut doughevenly between mints. Gently press edgesof pillows to seal. Place pillows 2 inches (5cm) apart on a ungreased cookie sheets.Bake for 9 to 12 minutes, or until edges arelight golden brown. Cool completely beforestoring.

Makes about 4 dozen cookies. From Cookies.

My thoughts:I think that think that this is a coolrecipe because if you have a doll orsomething else you can pretend thatthing is sleeping on a edible pillow andin the middle of the night the thing isso hungry that the thing eats the thingsedible pillow and then wakes up in themorning finding that it has no morepillows (you ate them of course!) so itwill ask your mom to bake it anotherpillow.

Cool ways you can use this:1.You can use this at a picnic (you andyour friend pretend to sleep on teeny-tiny too small pillows).2.You can place these decoratively ona platter and serve them for dessert.3.You can sneak them off the traywhile your parents aren't looking.4.You can serve these at a party (your

birthday).5.You can eat this at anytime at all (Irecommend right after they are bakedor snack or dessert).
