1 Corinthians 6:12-2012 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. 13 “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

Body as Temple

• If our bodies belong to God, then we must ask Him what He wants us to do with them first.

• This includes tattoos and body piercings.• These are things we do to our body, so they

fall under the principle of God’s property and what He permits.

Leviticus 19:26-28

26 “You shall not eat any flesh with the blood in it. You shall not interpret omens or tell fortunes. 27 You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard. 28 You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the LORD.

Tattoos in the Bible

• The Levitical law is cut and dried, but there are some things to notice:• Look at the laws surrounding this one. It seems to be civic

law for Israel, and is not repeated as moral laws in the NT.• Three Types of Law• Moral Law (Ten Commandments, laws repeated in NT)• Ritual Laws (Sacrificial System, what to where at temple,

clean/unclean)• Civic Laws (Don’t mix clothing fabrics, don’t mix dairy and

meat products, don’t eat flesh with blood in it)

Tattoos in the Bible

• God might use the tattoo as an image of His forever relationship with Israel (Isaiah 49:16)

• It’s possible that both the Mark of the Beast (Revelation 13:16) and God’s seal on His chosen 144,000 (Revelation 14:1) could be tattoos

• Jesus says He’ll “write My name on him” to the overcomer in Revelation 3:12

Exodus 20:1-61 “Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. 2 When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. 3 If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out alone. 5 But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ 6 then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.

Oooo! Shiny!

• Piercings have been around for a while, but have their biblical origin in Israelite slavery.

• The Bible treats piercing and jewelry as a neutral issue. It is more concerned with how they are used.

• Positive Jewelry: Beauty enhancement and wealth (Genesis 24:53)

• Negative Jewelry: For Idolatry and making idols (Exodus 32:24)

My Life

• What does the Spirit say to you about tattoos?• Are there other matters of conscience He is

leading you in?• How do you relate to others in matters of

conscience?• What are the standards of your personal

holiness? Who is holding you accountable to your standards?
