exhibit at the Contemporary Jewish Museum
(CJM). Barbara Silverman of the CJM will ex-
plore the ways in which Stein’s life and writings
have influenced the American artistic imagina-
tion and inspired generations of writers, artists,
and musicians.
Balenciaga and Spain | June 27th , 7:00pm
Julia Geist of the Fine Arts Museums of San
Francisco will discuss the enduring work of haute
couture master Cristóbal Balenciaga and the im-
pact of Spanish culture, history, and traditions on
his work.
Drama in the Desert | July 25th , 7:00pm
A revealing discussion of what has been called
one of the greatest art events in the world: Burn-
ing Man. Holly Kreuter & Barbara Traub, authors
of critically acclaimed books on this mysterious
subject, will discuss the Burning Man experience,
one based on radical self-expression, participa-
tory art, and generosity.
Picasso Masterpieces from the Musée National, Paris | August 29th , 7:00pm
Marsha Holm of the de Young will discuss the
museum’s extraordinary exhibition of more than
100 masterpieces by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso
on loan from the permanent collection of Paris’
Musée National Picasso. The works on view
demonstrate the wide range of artistic styles and
forms that the artist mastered.

A Laugh Gone Viral | May 6th, 7:00pm
This performance promises an evening of laugh-
ter and levity. Through live skits and video, com-
edy group Good Neighbor will showcase some of
its sketches that have become viral hits. The group
will also discuss the writing and creating of comedic
material and how the internet has changed the land-
scape for the creative artist.
What Went Wrong ? | June 3rd, 7:00pm
Join us for an evening of real people telling real-life
stories, raw and without notes. We’ve invited five
veterans of the Porchlight series to share short sto-
ries based on the theme “What Went Wrong?” To
add to the excitement, we’ll have an open mic story-
telling session, where anything can happen. Come
and share your story.
Mystery Night | July 1st, 7:00pm
Written exclusively for the Mill Valley Public Li-
brary, The Eternal Hush of Silence is the twisting
tale of a Centennial celebration gone awry. A time
capsule, a body, and a never-before-published man-
uscript by Jack Kerouac are all part of the mystery.
Here’s a chance for everyone to sharpen their detec-
tive skills and solve the murder mystery.
Seven Guitars & MTC 2011/12 Season | July 19th, 7:00pm
Seven Guitars is August Wilson’s play about the African American ex-
perience in the 1940s. Learn about the background of Seven Guitars and
get an overview of MTC’s next season.
Edward Albee’s Tiny Alice | May 18th, 7:00pm
Albee’s controversial Tiny Alice continues to raise challenging ques-
tions about religion and faith. Marin Theater Company (MTC) staff
will explore the life of Albee and his infamous 1964 play.
Mountain Play: Hairspray | May 3rd, 7:00pm
Get the skinny on this year’s production of Hairspray and the many
transformations of the Mountain Play from its humble beginnings in
1913 to the present day. Hear what’s in store for their 2013 centennial.
Local Author SeriesGabriella Mautner | May 19th, 7:00pm
Transforming Life into Literature. Mautner will talk about the various
stages of her life and how her books were inspired directly and indirect-
ly by experiences in different countries.
John Gray | July 21st, 7:00pm
Best-selling relationship author John Gray has penned 17 books, in-
cluding the #1 New York Times Best Seller, Men are from Mars, Women
are from Venus. Gray will discuss writing his most famous work.
Marsha Heckman | June 16th, 7:00pm
Floral designer Heckman will discuss her evolution as an author of
books for brides and flower aficionados. This Tam High grad exhibits
annually at the Bouquets to Art showcase at the de Young museum.
Jaqueline (Jaki) Girdner | August 18th, 7:00pm
Girdner, author of essays, short stories, and 16 murder mysteries, cur-
rently writes and draws greeting cards. She will talk about the challeng-
es of communicating at length and of communicating concisely.

The Mill Valley Public Library’s 100th
birthday is cause for celebration. Join us
Saturday, July 23rd under the redwoods
in Old Mill Park for the Library’s birthday
party. The celebration will be reminis-
cent of the parties of early Mill Valley, an
old-time get-together featuring live acous-
tic music and turn-of-the-century games.
Entry is free and all ages are welcome. Food
and drink available for purchase. Literary Journal Submit your original poetry, fiction, and non-fiction for publication in
The Mill Valley Public Library Quarterly Review. The topic is “The Im-possible.” Deadline for submission: August 10th (4,000 word limit).
