Local makes first start in NFL game

First, it was Friday night lights. Heput on his pads and strapped downhis helmet, donning the black and

gold as No. 72.Then it was Saturday game days, pur-

ple, and a No. 66.On Sunday, Oct. 2, it was again black

and gold, this time in No. 67, but instead ofstaring up at a crowd of Andale Indiansfans, he saw a sea of humanity, wavingTerrible Towels and chanting for theirfavorite NFL team: the Pittsburgh Steelers.

And in his first start in an NFL game,B.J. Finney had countless more eyes onhim through TV screens around the coun-try—many wondering if he would be up tothe challenge to fill in for an injured team-mate in the left guard position.

“We thought we were going to be keep-ing our eye on B.J. Finney,” CommentatorChris Collinsworth said early in the sec-ond quarter of the Steelers’ game againstthe Kansas City Chiefs. “But so far he’sbeen doing pretty well.”

It wasn’t all that long ago that Finneywas proving himself as an Andale Indian, earning letters and state championships inboth wrestling and football.

When it came time for college, he didn’tget the attention he hoped.

So he found himself a walk-on forKansas State University, eventually prov-ing his worth so much that he not onlystarted but became a team captain.

When the NFL draft took place, hewatched and waited for a team to take achance on him, but no one called his num-

ber—that is, not during the actual draft.Instead, when the smoke cleared and

the draft hype was dying down, his phonerang, and he spoke to a team he dreamedof playing for his entire childhood, a team

he and his late father loved: the PittsburghSteelers.

“For whatever reason, he has beenunderestimated his entire career,” AndaleHigh School head football coach Gary

O’Hair said. “He was overlooked out ofhigh school and proved all of the collegerecruiters wrong. He was overlooked inthe NFL and is proving all of the NFLexperts wrong.”

Finney was relegated to the practicesquad in his first year in the league, buthis spirit didn’t let him quit, and Sundaywas evidence of that as Finney had hisfirst NFL start.

For O’Hair, watching Finney play onSunday was validation of a decision heand his coaching staff made back whenFinney was a sophomore at Andale.

With little notice, O’Hair put Finney ina game on the road against powerhouseTopeka-Hayden at a time when Andalehad a lot to lose.

The team was on a 26-game winningstreak, and following some injuries,Finney seemed like the best option to fill ahole on the line.

“Some of the coaches didn't think B.J.was up for the challenge,” O’Hairsaid. “We won the game on a last-secondfield goal and went on to win state. B.J.played better than any of us everydreamed. Andale could not have won hadit not been for B.J. and his outstandingperformance.”

And Finney’s performance on Sundaynight for the Steelers was impressive aswell.

“He’s just taking people and buryingthem,” Collinsworth noted during thegame.

For O’Hair, it isn’t just Finney’s ability

to protect a quarterback that’s remark-able.

“The most impressive thing about B.J.is not his athletic ability,” O’Hair said.“Don't get me wrong, B.J. is a great ath-lete. He is most impressive in the wayhe has responded to challenges and adver-sity throughout his lifetime. Adversitycan tear a person down or make himstronger—it all depends on how he reactsto it. In every situation of B.J.'s career, hehas met every challenge head on andresponded to adversity in a way thathas made him better.”

During the Sunday night game, NBCplayed a video of B.J. emotionallyannouncing to his friends and family thathe would be playing for the Steelers.

“He’s playing with that kind of emo-tion tonight as well,” Collinsworth noted.

And if one were to ask Finney’s highschool coach if this start was the last theworld would hear from the 24-year-old, hisanswer would be a resounding no.

“You can't measure what's inside aguy, and B.J. Finney is proof of that,”O’Hair said. “He is a winner through andthrough. I brag on him constantly andcan't tell you how proud I am of him.”

Of order andmonarchs

Iremember one evening as achild witnessing a moving, fluttering sky. A swarm of

monarch butterflies had settledin the various elms and maplesin our yard, coloring them burntorange against the light of a set-ting sun. I walked barefootacross the lawn with my parents, all of us gawking upward at thethrobbing, living foliage inamazement.

At that age, 6 or 7, I had norational concept of the world orthe knowledge of a continent-widemigration of millions of insects. I justknew that the display was sofar outside of my ordinarylife experience that it mustbe magic. Perhaps an older, more theological personwould have interpretedthe feeling of awe I feltas a manifestation ofthe divine.

Standing amongthe thousands of crea-tures, I felt asort ofinsignifi-cance. Itwas one ofthosemomentswhen yourealize thatyou are part of alarger system and not thecenter. I get the same feelinglooking out at the ocean or atthe mountains when I visitColorado.

I still look for the arrival of mon-archs each year, but I don’t think I willever again see a display to rival that day. There wasn’t much of a showing thisyear, or at least I haven't seen them yet. Isaw one while sitting in my backyardwith Bruce Behymer. It's been nice yard-sitting weather of late.

I guess I got to ruminating onmonarch butterflies because of our but-terfly story recently, but I usually endup on the topic at least once a fall.

This year the species hasapparently made some sort ofcomeback, though habitat losshas driven the creature’s num-bers down over the years.

Strides have been made withherbicides to eradicate milk-weed, a general nuisance of somany fields or pastures. Asmilkweed is what monarchcaterpillars feed on, an unin-tended consequence has been asevere decline in butterfly pop-ulations.

It seems, as with so many things, progress and advancement comes with abalance. Our world becomes increas-ingly ordered, but in that order, we elim-inate those moments of serendipity thatcan sometimes take our breath away. There’s a book that many children readin grade school called “The Giver” thatexpresses this point much more elo-quently than I can, if some of yourecall reading it.

I say all of this because I think itis important for us to see the existingaspects of the worldout-

sideof our

own neathouses,

straight roadsand tamed land we

have created. Things thatexist not because we allow

them but simply because theyare: the sunsets across the plains,

the lightening that cuts the sky, ahawk taking a rabbit over a field, oreven an out-of-place morning glory in awell-kept garden.

These things remind us that we arenot the center but part of a system, something far more complex, interest-ing and beautiful than our own attemptsat order could ever create.

Traditions instill a sense of comfort, belongingFor me, the Halloween/fall season is

the start of “the holidays.” I've evenalready started Christmas shopping.

One reason for this is I'm thinking I won'tfeel the financial burden of present buyingso much if I start it now.

In my family, besides Christmas gifts, wehave several birthdays for which we buypresents in November, December andJanuary. My sister's birthday is Nov. 24,which is Thanksgiving this year, my sonRodger's birthday is Nov. 25, my sonRobert's birthday is Dec. 1, my son Andy'sbirthday is Jan. 11, and my boyfriend'sbirthday is in late January. In addition, myboyfriend's daughter's birthday is around Dec. 3.

So that's a lot of birthdays clumped in a few months. The holidays, for me, carry with them traditions

and memories. I remember as a child my grandpa act-ing like he could hear Santa's reindeer on the roof. Irecall a variety of presents I received as a kid and evenas an adult. There was the Strange Change Machine Igot and coats and fancy outfits my parents gave me.There's a certain fondness about those presents andhow someone cared enough to give them to me. I alsolike the feeling I get when giving gifts and watchingsomeone open presents I give to him or her. It's the tra-ditions that are important to me and many others.

One year, my family and I decided not to buyChristmas presents. We decided that, but then I saw allthe people rushing about buying presents and I felt sadI wasn't going to be a part of that. I'm not sure why. I

like traditions. They give us something we knowwe can count on, something that is steady andsomething that makes us feel safe. At least itdoes for me.

Our family definitely has traditions atChristmas, and even at Halloween. OnChristmas Eve, depending on how much energywe all have, we go to the Christmas Eve churchservice in Manhattan, followed by a nicely pre-pared home-cooked meal of ham. If we skip theservice, we still have the dinner. Then that night, one of us (well, it's me now) puts together stock-ings. In the morning, we first have breakfast, complete with Christmas Morning Rolls, as wecall them. Then, we get our stockings and reveal

what's in those. Next, my kids pass out presents toeveryone, including the pets.

After that, we start unwrapping presents, going oneby one, from youngest to oldest. Usually, one of the petsis the youngest, and my dad is the oldest.

This is followed by my sister putting a turkey in theoven with a stick of butter added for great flavor, andthen some of us go into a Christmas coma because weget so excited opening presents. All of us help withcooking. There's also the traditional cleaning of theliving room of boxes and wrapping paper. In additionto the turkey, there's cooking of many traditionaldishes, like stuffing, rolls, pies (I usually make mineahead of time and bring them), more pies, green beancasserole and a corn casserole.

Our Thanksgiving weekend traditions include shop-ping, eating turkey and watching a movie, usually

“Cold Comfort Farm.” That's a great movie. You shouldwatch it. However, this year's movie might be “The FullMonty,” as my mom suggested recently. We have theThanksgiving meal around 2 or 3 p.m., and then fordinner, there's always pie. Yum, especially with whip-ping cream.

Last weekend, I visited the town in which my par-ents and sister reside—Manhattan, Kan., not the otherManhattan. I went there to see the musical “SweeneyTodd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” It was agreat production, by the way, and my sister directed it.

As I drove in the neighborhood where my parentslive, I remembered Halloweens of yesterday when Itrick-or-treated there, gathering gobs of sugary treats. That's another family tradition—trick-or-treating.However, since my kids are grown now, we don't do thatanymore. I also recall taking my kids trick-or-treatingin that same neighborhood where I grew up. One time,Andy was so excited, he kept running in front of usfrom house to house. He was a streak of sugary excite-ment.

Another time, my youngest son sprained his kneeand couldn't go door to door, so his brothers brought anextra container along when they went, telling folkstheir brother couldn't go because of his injury. Theybrought back a bunch of candy for Robert. Nice broth-ers.

After my kids were done trick-or-treating, I'd have tocheck the candy. Other Halloween traditions haveincluded decorating, visiting a graveyard and, ofcourse, handing out candy. Another thing is when mygrandma was alive, she'd keep track of how manytrick-or-treaters came to the door. My mom does that, and now I do the same.

This Halloween weekend, my mom, sister, me andson Rodger plan to go to Atchison, which is supposed tobe the most haunted town in Kansas. They have ghosttour trolley rides, and we're also going to go on a ghosthunt. My sister and mom have been making an annualtrip there, and we're joining them this year.

Yes, traditions are something we all like and need, Ibelieve, in this crazy world.

You ‘oat’ to bakethese cookies today

I’ve been in the moodfor cookies lately, so Idecided to try a new

recipe last week. I scrolled through

potential recipes, lookingfor one that would saveme a trip to the store, andI stumbled on one for oat-meal coconut pecan cook-ies. I happened to haveeverything I needed in mypantry, so I went to work.

The first batch of cookies came out ofthe oven, and I realized my mistakequickly: these were too delicious to keep inthe house.

I’m not sure how many of them we atebefore I managed to take the batch over tothe high school, where I was substituteteaching for the day, and abandoned themin the teacher’s lounge—the best place toget rid of excess food, I’ve discovered.

Before the day was out, I had severalrequests for the recipe, and myTupperware container merely containedcrumbs.

I dodged a caloric bullet, but those cook-ies were too good not to make again, so I’msure I’ll be fighting them again in thefuture.

If you want to fight the urge to eat anentire batch of cookies by yourself, Ihighly recommend making this recipesoon.

I found it on a blog by Sherri and GregHall called “Watch Learn Eat” athttp://watchlearneat.com/oatmeal-coconut-pecan-cookies/. I didn’t double thevanilla like I often do, because they alreadyput a lot in there, but I definitely doubledthe cinnamon.

Oatmeal Coconut Pecan CookiesIngredients2 sticks butter3/4 cup packed brown sugar1/3 cup sugar2 eggs1 tablespoon vanilla1-1/4 cups flour1 teaspoon baking soda2 heaping teaspoons ground cinnamon1/2 teaspoon salt2-1/2 cups quick oats1 cup pecans, finely chopped1 cup sweetened coconut flakes

DirectionsPreheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine the butter, sugars, eggs and

vanilla in a mixing bowl.Stir in the flour, baking soda, cinna-

mon, salt and quick oats. Now toss in the pecans and coconut

flakes.Once everything is combined well, roll

the dough into one-inch balls and place ona cookie sheet. (Mine barely spread, soafter the first batch, I only placed themabout an inch apart, but I don’t know ifthat’s typical or not for this recipe.)

Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the cook-ies are lightly browned.

One friend said these tasted a lot likethe cereal Honey Bunches of Oats, whichwas a really good description and alsoexplained why I liked this recipe so much.

All I can recommend is that you eitheruse this recipe to exercise a lot of self con-trol or make sure you have some folks toshare with.

Then again, if you eat the whole batchyourself, I promise I won’t judge you. It’san understandable reaction.

Destiny toDisney WorldLocal teen granted dream

from Make-A-Wish

Destiny Garcia's parents are quick to hug her, and hermom is just as quick to help her walk, since the left side ofGarcia's body doesn't always function as it should.Sometimes, the teen's left hand will flop around, seemingto have a will of its own, and her mom, SabrinaWinesberry, lends a helping hand or arm to lean on toguide Garcia as she maneuvers around.

In addition, Garcia, at age 13, doesn't weigh much.“She only weighs 64 pounds,” Winesberry said.

In her 13 years of life, Destiny Garcia has had to dealwith things people five times her age haven't had to expe-rience.

Garcia was diagnosed with a brain tumor near thebase of her skull between both hemispheres of her brainon July 10, 2015. That summer, they spent a good deal oftime at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. “We were inthere for a whole month,” Winesberry said.

Garcia didn't seem to have the words after being askedwhat it's like to have a brain tumor. “It's, I don't know,”she said, curling up in a little ball and seeming to bite hernails.

“She scares herself sometimes,” Winesberry said.“Like when she went into the hospital, she gave every-body a scare. I had to calm her down. It's just been roughfor you, hasn't it?” she asked Garcia.

Garcia didn't answer.Getting diagnosed with the brain tumor was a slow

process, but it came because Garcia's parents were deter-mined to get an answer.

“She was having headaches and nausea,” Winesberrysaid, which were real bad.

On May 27, 2015, they went to the zoo, and Winesberrythought her daughter got sick from something at the zoo.So Garcia's mom made an appointment for her daughterto see a doctor in June, who said it was a common cold.

“A week later, I took her to the emergency room, andshe was just constantly throwing up, and they said thesame thing,” Winesberry said.

They gave her some nausea medicine, and sent themon their way.

Winesberry said she told her husband, DarrinWinesberry, that after Garcia's eye appointment, she'dlike to have a body scan done on Garcia to see what wasgoing on.

“The eye doctor was the one who caught it,”Winesberry said, since Garcia's eyes were swollen. “Hesaid it could be a brain tumor or fluid in the brain.”

From there, the eye doctor called another doctor, andGarcia got in the next day. There, an MRI was done, and

someone asked Winesberry if they'd like to wait for thedoctor to look over the MRI. They waited. They then wereinstructed to go to the emergency room at NewtonMedical Center.

“That's when I knew it was bad,” Winesberry said.Once there, a doctor and nurse told Winesberry about

the brain tumor. That's when Winesberry said she brokedown and told them they needed to tell Garcia, too,

because this was going to happen to her. Both rode an ambulance from NMC to a

Wichita hospital, and Winesberry calledher husband to say what was going on. Hemet them at the hospital.

“Ambulance ride was fun,” Destinysaid, wearing a pink hat and blue Make-A-Wish T-shirt.

Garcia has two siblings at home,Raymond Hernandez and ValentinaHernandez.

Since they had done an MRI on her thatday, they had to wait the next day to doanother MRI, which was more detailed.

The results of that MRI showed a tumorthe size of a golf ball, and they had to waita couple of weeks to see if it was cancer-ous, which it was. Garcia went into thehospital on July 10, 2015, and the operationwas July 13.

Garcia has had three surgeries. Thefirst removed the tumor, the second was toadd a shunt and the third was a port forchemo. As of Friday, Garcia still was get-ting chemotherapy. They go back on Oct. 27to see if she'll continue with chemo or stop, however. They'll know Nov. 3 if the canceris gone.

Garcia started radiation therapy onAug. 27 and stopped Sept. 30. Chemostarted on Oct. 22, 2015.

Because of her health problems, Garciawas home schooled last academic year, while this year, she's an eighth-grader atChisholm Middle School, where shereceives physical therapy twice a day.

Physical therapy isn't the only therapyGarcia has received. She also received awish-of-a-lifetime therapy since she wasgranted a desire by Make-A-Wish Kansas.

“Her wish was to go to Paris,”Winesberry said, adding that wish couldn'tbe granted because they don't haveAmerican doctors there.

Her second wish was to go to DisneyWorld, to stay in the Animal KingdomHotel and have a tea party with PrincessAurora (Sleeping Beauty).

“A child with a life-threatening medicalcondition who has reached the age of 2-1/2and is younger than 18 at the time of refer-ral is potentially eligible for a wish,” saidBethany Shirk, communications and com-munity relations manager with Make-A-Wish Kansas. “We rely on referrals to helpus reach more kids with life-threateningmedical conditions every year. Potentialwish kids, medical professionals, parents, legal guardians and family members withdetailed knowledge of the child's currentmedical condition can initiate the referralprocess.”

Garcia had a favorite part of the dreamtrip.

“The tea party with the princess,”Garcia said. “It was like you could dress uplike a princess and you could wear aprincess crown. They gave you a PrincessAurora crown.”

Garcia said, along with the tea, theyhad cake.“And it taste good, and I was try-ing to eat Mom's cake,” Garcia said, smil-ing.

The trip was Sept. 12 of this year, andthe entire family got to go, staying untilSept. 18.

Another organization, Give the Kids aWorld, gave the family tickets for threedays in the park, Sea World and UniversalStudios, Winesberry said.

“We didn't know that was all in,” sheadded. She said Give the Kids a Worldworks with Make A Wish.

“She didn't go on the bigger ridesbecause she got a little scared,”Winesberry said about her daughter. Herfavorite ride was the Minions, however.

Another benefit of the trip was Garcia

gained three pounds, and the family got toeat at Medieval Times; they have a coupleof photos on display in their living room ofthat experience, as well as a caricaturedrawing from Disney World of the family, with Garcia in the middle.

Garcia also posed in photos with theMinions, SpongeBob, Chip and Dale,Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy.

When Garcia met Chip and Dale, theydidn't want to let her go.“I told them to giveme my baby back,” Winesberry said.

Which seems like what the entire fam-ily wants—to keep their baby. The familyhas been a great support to Garcia, and itseems Garcia has helped her mom throughthe ordeal. “I don't know how I would'vemade it without her,” Winesberry said.
