Province Residents,

It’s Transition TimeAs nighttime low temperatures in The Valley start to creep up into the 60s, the Bermuda grass, which has been dormant all winter, begins to wake up and grow. As daytime temperatures exceed 90 degrees, the winter Rye grass begins to recede. It is during this transition period where both types of grass compete for space and water. Transitioning from Rye grass to Bermuda grass is, ideally, a gradual process that lasts from the beginning of April through the end of May. If managed correctly all the turf in the common areas should be primarily Bermuda grass by the beginning of June. Turf transition takes place during April & May.

What To ExpectYou can expect to see subtle changes in the turf areas throughout the transition period. The Irrigation Technicians monitor the watering times to encourage the Bermuda grass to grow instead of the Rye. This actually means that we will be using less water, not more. We gradually lower the decks of our mowers from 2” down to 1”-1.25”. Lower mowing heights does not hurt the Bermuda, but will serve to suppress the Rye. As the Rye grass dies off, the turf may appear off color or yellow and there may even be some distinct areas that appear dry. This is a temporary condition that improves as the Bermuda grass fills in. Sometimes when the Rye grass dies, it forms a thick mat. This is easily removed with a verticutting machine as necessary. Once the Bermuda grass is actively growing (usually by the first of May), Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer (21-0-0) is applied to promote healthy turf.

Try It At HomeTransition will take place on a large scale in your common areas. However, the same process applies for your yard. Gradually, lower the height of your lawn mower over the course of a few weeks. Reduce the amount of water to approximately 6-8 minutes every 2 or 3 days. If you encounter some dead spots, use a hard rake and a little elbow grease to remove the matted Rye grass. Then apply Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer (21-0-0) at a rate of 5 lbs. per 1,000sq. ft. of turf. By the 1st of June, your Bermuda grass will be ready for the summer months ahead.

Did You Know?Homeowners tend to overwater their lawns. Use a screwdriver to test your lawn. If it goes in easily, there is plenty of moisture in the soil. If it’s a struggle to push it, you probably need to give your lawn more water.

be A GOOD DOG NeiGhbOr

Neighborly relationships are ruined every day by unconscientious dog owners, and poorly trained dogs. But, if you take the right measures, you can have your dog and your friendly neighbors too.

bArKiNGOne of the biggest issues people have with their dog-owning neighbors is excessive barking. The best way to keep your dog from barking and infuriating your neighbors is to keep him inside when you’re not available to supervise.

This doesn’t just benefit your neighbors. Dogs left alone in the yard can escape and get in to all sorts of trouble. But as far as the excessive barking, you have no way to control the behavior, or correct it if you aren’t around to witness it. If you leave your dog outside all day while you are at work, you have no way of

knowing if he is disturbing your neighbors, so it is best to leave him inside. If he is not well behaved enough to be trusted in the house, crate training is a wonderful and safe option.

You can also take measures to limit your dog’s barking in general. Come up with a “be quiet” command like “hush,” or “enough.” When your dog barks, say “hush” and “sit.” If he sits and stops barking, give him a treat. Tell him to hush every single time he barks, and give him a treat every time he sits and stops, and he will learn that hush not only means that he must stop barking, but also that he is going to be rewarded.

PiCK uP The POOAnother issue people have with their dog-owner neighbors is dog waste. It is unpleasant, smelly, and a huge pain if you step in it. It also spreads disease. Dog waste left out can seep into the ground

water and make people and other animals sick.

Police your yard regularly for doggy piles. There are many affordable pooper scoopers available, so the fact that dog waste is gross and you don’t want to touch it is no excuse. Also, always, always, pick up after your dog in your own yard or when on a common area. Not doing so is

unsanitary and intolerably rude. There are lots of small, handy carriers for biodegradable bags, some of which even attach to your dog’s leash for superior convenience. Never leave the house to walk your dog without some baggies to pick up after him.

NO rOAMiNGWhen your dog is not in your home or yard, he should be accompanied and on a leash. You have zero control of a dog not on a leash, no matter how well trained he is. The best way to avoid disaster is to leash your dog.

According to nextdaypets.com, if you follow these tips, use your good judgment, and think about how you would like you and your dog to be treated, you can be a great dog neighbor. There’s no reason that dog

people and non-dog people can’t get along and have fun, fulfilling neighborly relationships.

If you have any community standards questions, or wish to discuss any issues, please feel free to stop by my office, contact me at (520) 568-8628 or send an email to [email protected].

Hello Province Residents

As we get closer to spring, many of you may be returning to Province or planning a summer retreat. We would like to remind those of you who are returning to Province to update your information with us by reviewing your permanent guest list, contact numbers and emergency contact information. For those of you planning a summer retreat, please be sure to notify us and review your emergency contact information so we will have a current number to contact you should an issue arise.

Once again, we would like to remind you to use the guest notification line (520) 568-3457 or call the guard gate (520) 568-2885 to notify us of any guests or vendors that will be visiting your home. This will help expedite the f low of traffic and get your guests or vendors to your home more quickly.

This month we would like to introduce our newest guard, Jordan Cochran. Born in Mississippi, Jordon moved at the age of 12, to Leesburg, VA, outside of Washington DC, when his step-father, a retired Naval Commander, began work with the FBI and the Pentagon. This move allowed Jordan access to FBI headquarters as well as the opportunity to visit many Civil War battlefields. Jordan and his family moved to Arizona in 2001. Jordan graduated from the Scottsdale Culinary Institute as a Pastry Chef. His goal is to become a firefighter/paramedic and work here in Maricopa. Thank you Jordan for all your efforts here at Province!

Soaking rains across the Valley this winter brought much-needed water to our desert environment. Rainwater is especially beneficial to plant material as rainwater is less alkaline than our irrigation water in the Phoenix area. While rain is a positive thing for our plants and irrigation water bills, it also helps weeds grow. At DLC Resources, Inc. we employ extra resources to treat the common area landscape after to eliminate current weeds and inhibit future weed growth.

For effective weed control in your yard, manual removal is the easiest way to get rid of a small number of weeds. However, to control weeds in a large area, herbicides are the most cost-effective and efficient tools available. There are two categories of herbicide that we use: Pre-emergent and Post-emergent. Different mixtures of these herbicides are used depending on the season.

Pre-emergent herbicides are designed to prevent seeds from germinating in the soil. These are most effective when applied during the summer monsoon or from November through January. A timely application of Pre-emergent can greatly reduce the number of weeds that germinate since it inhibits the weeds’ roots and does not allow them to grow.

For weeds that have germinated in your landscape, a Post-emergent herbicide, such as Roundup, will do the trick. Roundup should be used in the warmer months as it does not work well in cooler weather. To keep weeds under control in winter, switch to an herbicide containing Diquat. Products to treat weeds in your yard, such as Roundup and Triple Strike (contains Diquat), are available for personal use at most home improvement stores or nurseries.

These products are Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved and have been deemed safe and reliable. No license is needed to apply most herbicides on your own property, however, DLC trains and maintains a crew of technicians to safely transport and apply these herbicides in your common areas. Our Spray Technicians are licensed by the State of Arizona Office of Pest Management. When dealing with any chemical, make sure to read the label and follow instructions carefully.

To help Province residents become better acquainted with our website, I am very excited to announce a new game that I will be trying. The way it works is that I will be giving you a piece of information, an article, document, picture, etc. that is located somewhere on the website. The object is to be one of the first 5 people that can come into my office and show me where the information is located; the first 5 lucky people will receive a prize! I think this is a fun way for you to become familiar with all of the valuable information that we have on our site. So let’s start off by having you locate this month’s newsletter (April 2010). We are going to continue with this game over the next several months, so check the website daily for updated information! Good luck!

In continuation with helpful computer tips, this month’s topic is Keyboard Shortcuts and Hotkeys. Province residents know the value of saving time and effort, and getting to know keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys on your computer helps you do both. Many times it is easier to use these shortcuts instead of a mouse. With keyboard commands, there is no need to look at the mouse, then the screen, and then find your keyboard placement again.Using the keyboard shortcuts can help you handle common activities on your PC, such as cutting and pasting text, quickly and easily. By using these tips and tricks, it will also make using the computer much easier on your eyes.

It has been a busy few months at Province! I would like to take a

moment to thank everyone who has attended, participated in and volunteered at the many events we have enjoyed so far this year. Every year the lifestyle calendar becomes more active and more exciting. The many events we enjoy would not be possible without all of you! Your suggestions, participation and volunteered time and talents are what make the Province lifestyle so dynamic.

The Big Band Swing Fling held on January 30 was such a hit that many of you requested the Swing Fever Band be invited back for New Year’s Eve 2011 and we have done just that! If you enjoyed this year’s Big Band event, make sure to mark your calendars for Dec. 31, 2011! (Now that’s what I call planning ahead!) They will also be invited to come back between now and then so make sure to keep an eye on the event calendar for the Swing Fever Band.

Over 200 residents participated in the Chinese Auction held on February 13. The Social Committee and I have received many inquiries as to how much money was collected at this event. The total amount collected was $1308.73. After expenses, which included decorations, fortune cookies, bidding signs and beverage supplies, the total profit for the event was $1167.13. This along with the approximately $4000 profit from the Variety Show is being used to make much needed changes to the lighting system in the Town Hall which will benefit all of Province’s future productions.

On March 6, Province’s very own Singing Canucks volunteered their time and talents to provide a dance and sing-along for Province. Over 200 residents attended this free event and enjoyed an evening of dancing, singing and socialization. Thank you to the Singing Canucks for donating their time!
