Come & Rest Awhile

Mirador is still what it was in the beginning: an observatory, a point of vantage And if the house could speak, this is what it would say to you: Look out of my windows and try to extend your vision beyond the Gulf of Lingayen to all of Asia. Try to make out more clearly what God's plan for all these people is and for all those who—like yourself—seek nothing else but to be of service to man. -Fr.Horacio dela Costa

Sitting on a hill 1500 meters above sea level, the Mirador Jesuit Villa has had a long and rich history that dates back as early as 1890, when Fr. Miguel Roces, then Rector of the Ateneo de Manila, suggested acquiring a house in the Province of Benguet to serve as a sanitarium for sick Jesuits. By 1900, the Jesuit-run Manila Observatory had already set-up a meteorological and seismic station there. A few years later, the Jesuits acquired the property and built a three-room house of pine wood and cogon roof where they would rest during summers. After the war, Fr. Leo Cullum spearheaded the rebuilding of the house in 1952 and hired renowned architect Gines Rivera, an MIT alumnus and designer of Ateneo de Manila. It also welcomed Jesuit scholastics who were expelled from China and served as their theologate.

To this day, Mirador continues to be a villa house for Jesuits. But since 1962, it has also served as a retreat house and seminar center for different groups. Christian Life Community Philippines (CLC-P) manages the facility now and offers a program of activities like prayer workshops, recollections, and retreats throughout the year.

He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”-Mark 6:31

.reyarp ot fleseno gnisopsid ot era sgnidnuorrus eht laicurc woh swonk taerter no neeb sah ohw enoynAIf by praying we mean entering into a personal encounter with God’s loving presence, then where we choose to spend our alone time with God plays an important role in facilitating our receptivity to this moment.

Retreats are a privileged time to be schooled in prayer and to grow in intimacy with the Lord. Aside from providing the necessary supports to the retreatant, retreat houses help create that prayerful atmosphere so that the spiritual exercises can be made in solitude. There, surrounded by the tranquility of nature or simply in front of the Blessed Sacrament, one can leave the routine of the daily grind and devote a few days to pay closer attention to one’s Maker.

Jesuit retreat facilities are particularly equipped for silent retreats, whether they be situated on a hill, next to the sea, or right in the middle of a city. Beginning with this issue, the Windhover presents a series on the sacred spaces you can visit for your next vacation with the Lord.

It is not to see why Mirador is special to so many people. The exterior of the house is reminiscent of the green and white cottages that can be found in Baguio’s Camp John Hay and the Teachers’ Camp. Of the three chapels, an Igorot-themed vigil room with a mountain view is an easy favorite of retreatants. The gardens around the villa are well-maintained and have limestone walkways and secluded meditation areas, including Igorot-style huts. Other distinctive features include a Knidos-type labyrinth, a Bontoc dapay-an, and a koi pond.

Aside from providing a number of indoor and outdoor sacred spaces, Mirador also boasts of the Lourdes Shrine which has made its mark as one of the top tourist attractions in Baguio. Only recently, a new chapel was completed to accommodate an ever-growing number of pilgrims who the area. [See page 31.]

The most important thing, however, remains clear—Mirador is a place where one can be in communion with God. Again, in the words of Fr. de la Costa:

what they must be or do come here, to this quiet hill beneath a quiet heaven: to

to open windows to even broader horizons.
