Dear Friends,

It is with pride that we share our 2017 Annual Report that outlines the extensive support the Chemeketa Foundation receives for our students and programs at Chemeketa. We are thankful for you, our community of supporters, who play an essential role in furthering our mission of providing a quality education, removing financial barriers and preparing students for educational and career success.

In 2017, 2,260 students applied for Chemeketa Foundation scholarships and 648 scholarships were awarded. The cost of attending Chemeketa for one term (tuition, fees, books, rent, transportation, personal expenses, etc.) is $5,534 and $1,200 was our average annual scholarship award.

Thank you for all the ways you have found to help support Chemeketa and our students – from vehicle donations, to our automotive program, to directly supporting a scholarship or student assistance fund. Whatever you support that brings meaning to you and your family, it all makes a difference in the lives of our students seeking a better life through education. You are making a difference by making college possible.

On behalf of the Chemeketa Foundation staff and Foundation Board of Directors we say thank you!

Sincerely,

Rich Duncan Foundation Board President

I wasn’t sure which career path I wanted to follow, but growing up, electronics always

piqued my interest.

“After dropping out of high school in my senior year due to unforeseen circumstances, I put my education on hold. For four years

I worked a series of odd jobs. I finally decided to prepare for my GED and continue

my education through Chemeketa. At the age of 22, I enrolled in college and began taking classes in the electronics program.

Receiving this scholarship is something I will always remember and be grateful for. My scholarship gives me the opportunity to

concentrate solely on my academics.”

BOTH JIM AND CATHERINE BALTIMORE HAVE HAD LONG CAREERS IN EDUCATION IN THE SALEM-KEIZER SCHOOL DISTRICT. JIM WORKED IN CAREER AND TECHNICAL ED AND

CATHERINE IN MANY ADMINISTRATIVE AREAS. THEY ESTABLISHED THEIR SCHOLARSHIP TO HELP FULL-TIME STUDENTS STUDYING CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS

AT CHEMEKETA.

Because of the guidance I received,

my plan is to become a high school teacher. I

want to motivate

“I am the first in my family to go to college. When I graduated from high school, no one in my family knew how to help me fill out

college, financial aid or scholarship applications. Fortunately, I had support from my high

school counselor and writing teacher.

those who feel like they have no future. I want to help those that are the first in their family to go to college. I want to give students a vision

of life after high school. During my first term in college, I became pregnant. I felt my motivation

fading, until my daughter was born. At that moment, I knew it was no longer about me; it was about us. It hasn’t been easy, but this

scholarship has given me motivation and made me realize that I don’t have to do it alone.”

BOBBIE AND JOHN CLYDE BOTH RETIRED FROM LONG CAREERS IN EDUCATION. BOBBIE WAS THE DIRECTOR OF CHEMEKETA’S SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER WHICH

CONTINUES TO BE PART OF THE CENTER FOR BUSINESS & INDUSTRY. JOHN PLAYED A LEAD ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CAREER INFORMATION SYSTEM

(CIS) AND STARTED TWO EUGENE HIGH SCHOOLS. BOBBIE AND JOHN ESTABLISHED THEIR SCHOLARSHIP BECAUSE THEY CARE DEEPLY ABOUT HELPING FIRST-GENERATION LATINO STUDENT PARENTS IN NEED OF CHILD CARE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND CHEMEKETA.

Being a below-the-knee amputee, I have

managed to stand strong despite the

circumstances that molded me. I wanted

more out of life.

“When I was a little African-American kid in a pre-dominately black community, I saw life outside the

project’s brick walls, but felt stuck due to a lack of resources. Growing up in Southern California, I used poetry as a coping mechanism to deal with anxiety caused by obstacles that surrounded me. I always wanted to achieve higher goals and not become another innocent bystander. I moved to Oregon to provide a better life for my children.

I didn’t want my conditions to define me. Because I grew up a in a broken home without mentorship, I want to become a corrections officer and provide juveniles with the skills they need to be successful.

This award encourages me to remain humble...”

REMEMBERED FOR HIS LOVE OF LIFE, LEARNING, AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, JOSHUA DIED IN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT. HIS PARENTS, GLORIA AND JERRY BENNETT, ESTABLISHED THIS SCHOLARSHIP TO KEEP JOSHUA’S MEMORY ALIVE BY HELPING

Out of eleven children, I am the only one pursuing

a higher education. I want to be the best role

model I can for my younger siblings

“I began working full-time as soon as I turned seventeen. During my first year at Chemeketa

in the EMT program, it wasn’t always easy balancing work and school. When I joined the fire suppression program last year, it became nearly impossible. Having to quit my job to focus on school was not easy.

and show them that no matter the situation, you can still push through and go to school. My scholarship means a lot because it allows me to focus on my studies and less on my finances. My classes are getting harder and books are more expensive. Receiving this scholarship was a big relief. I know the sacrifices I am making to earn

my degree are worth it. I will graduate this year!”

IN 1949, ERNEST DUVALL RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF SALEM TO HELP PAY FOR HIS TUITION AT WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY. FIFTY-SIX YEARS

LATER, DR. ERNEST DUVALL ENSURED THAT THE SALEM ROTARY FOUNDATION WOULD CONTINUE TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS WITH HIS GIFT OF

$50,000. THE SALEM ROTARY FOUNDATION DUVALL SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDES ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO GRADUATES OF NORTH SALEM HIGH SCHOOL OR SOUTH SALEM

I could do anything that I set my mind to. I never thought that I’d consistently make

the honor roll, let alone complete a term of

college algebra!

“The last grade that I completed before starting at Chemeketa was the sixth grade back in 1994. Last year, I decided to make a change. I was working at a call center full-time while studying for my GED. Within a couple of weeks, I was enrolled at Chemeketa and began working towards a

degree for the first time. It didn’t take long to realize how expensive going to school and raising three children as a single mom was. Not having been in school for nearly 20 years, I struggled my first term. I wanted to prove to myself that

Receiving this scholarship has helped me to overcome some of the struggles of low self-esteem and adjusting to college life. Your

support has made all the difference.”

THE CASSY’S HOPE SCHOLARSHIP WAS ESTABLISHED BY FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN LOVING MEMORY OF CASSY HANSON AFTER HER DEATH IN THE MIDST OF HER COLLEGE JOURNEY.

CASSY RE-DISCOVERED HER LOVE OF LEARNING AT CHEMEKETA COMMUNITY COLLEGE AT THE AGE OF 48, THEN WENT ON TO GRADUATE FROM WESTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY

WITH A BACHELORS OF SCIENCE IN MATHEMATICS. CASSY WAS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER ONLY MONTHS AFTER STARTING HER PH.D, AND PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 54. HER SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORTS WOMEN OVER THE AGE OF 30 RETURNING TO SCHOOL AND

ATTENDING COLLEGE FULL-TIME SEEKING A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE.
