CézanneKnown as the father of modern painting, French painter Paul Cézanneis one of the great Post-Impression-ists, though his work was largely unrecognized and misunderstood during his lifetime. Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839, Cézanne brieflystudied law, but soon made the decision to paint full time in spite ofhis family’s objections. He moved toParis, where he met artist Camille Pissarro. Through Pissarro, Cézannebegan to work and exhibit with theother Impressionists, but was neverfully accepted into their circle. Towards the end of his life, Cézannereturned to Aix, where he painted the Provençal landscape in nearseclusion. At the time of his death in1906, Cézanne had finally gained therecognition he deserved as an artistand his work went on to influencemany artists.
