See the remarkable Pont duGard, built by the Romans in 19 B.C. as partof a 30-mile canal to supply water to thetown of Nîmes. This enormous three-tieredaqueduct rises as much as 160 feet abovethe valley and was used through the ninthcentury. Its first level carried a road and itsthird, a conduit; all three levels were builtwithout mortar.Independent Exploration: Enjoy lunchand free time at leisure in Avignon.

Known as the father ofmodern painting, Frenchpainter Paul Cézanne is one of

the great Post-Impressionists,though his work was largely

unrecognized and misunderstoodduring his lifetime. Born in Aix-en-Provence in1839, Cézanne briefly studied law, but soon madethe decision to paint full time in spite of his family’s objections. He moved to Paris, where he met artist Camille Pissarro. Through Pissarro,Cézanne began to work and exhibit with the otherImpressionists, but was never fully accepted intotheir circle. Towards the end of his life, Cézannereturned to Aix, wherehe painted the Provençallandscape in near seclusion. At the time of his death in 1906,Cézanne had finallygained the recognitionhe deserved as an artistand his work went on toinfluence many artists.

Known as the father ofmodern painting, Frenchpainter Paul Cézanne is one of

the great Post-Impressionists,though his work was largely

unrecognized and misunderstoodduring his lifetime. Born in Aix-en-Provence in1839, Cézanne briefly studied law, but soon madethe decision to paint full time in spite of his family’s objections. He moved to Paris, where he met artist Camille Pissarro. Through Pissarro,Cézanne began to work and exhibit with the otherImpressionists, but was never fully accepted intotheir circle. Towards the end of his life, Cézannereturned to Aix, wherehe painted the Provençallandscape in near seclusion. At the time of his death in 1906,Cézanne had finallygained the recognitionhe deserved as an artistand his work went on toinfluence many artists.
