Another busy month at the Bass Valley Community Centre. We have been gearing up for a number of things as we seem to rush towards the end of the year. Some remarkable devotion from volunteers coupled with enormous generosity from local traders has resulted in a wonderful fundraiser. On Election Day we ran a sausage sizzle/car boot sale and a whole lot of raffles. While there was a lot of planning that needed to go into it, it was all worth it on the day. Already we are looking forward to our Bass Country Music Day on the 22nd of February. We have big plans for a Sunday full of country music at the Bass Hall. All of this is being done to raise funds to keep us going through the year and to let the Bass Valley Community Centre continue to provide services to our local community. We had enormously good news recently that government funding has been restored to Occasional Child Care. This means that we have the opportunity to apply for funding to support our Occasional Child Care service. It won’t cover the cost of the service, but it should assist us, if our application is successful, to run a service that breaks even. We will be having a short break with the Centre closed from Monday 22nd December until we come back on Monday 5th January. We wish all in the community a very happy and relaxed festive season and look forward to catching up with everyone again in the New Year for a great year in 2015.

Dreamnight at the Zoo 2014

On the 13th of November we held our 9th annual ‘Dreamnight at the Zoo’ at Maru. Dreamnight is an event where we invite children with special needs or a life threatening illness to come along with their families and enjoy a free night. The beautiful spring night started off with our VIP guests watching our

shearing show and they then spent time enjoying our animals, Pirate Pete’s minigolf, carnival rides, roving entertainers, a BBQ dinner and finally a showbag full of donated goods and a family photo with one of our koalas. This year we had an overwhelming amount of volunteers, local businesses and Maru business suppliers who donated their time and goods to help make this possible. We would like to thank all of the Maru Staff who volunteered their time and our major sponsors the Bass Coast Shire Council, Bless Design, Nettle Engineering, Dazzle signs, Van Steensels Timber Grantville, Alex Scott Real Estate, Lothlorian, Cookers, Burra Foods, Stockdale & Leggo as well as 38 other sponsors who donated goods and services. All our volunteers and guests had a wonderful night and we can’t wait for our 10th annual Dreamnight next year.

Honorary Life Membership of Red Cross awarded to Woodleigh Vale member

Earlier this year at Government House in Melbourne, the Victorian Patron of Red Cross, Mrs Elizabeth Chernov, awarded Honorary Life Membership of Red Cross to one of our local members, Mrs Helene Hayes. This award recognises “Devotion to Red Cross Principles and selfless humanitarian service to others” and is the highest award that can be bestowed upon a member of Australian Red Cross.

Helene has been a member of Woodleigh Vale Red Cross Branch for 16 years. During that time, she has held positions at branch level, regional level, and has been a Member of the Victorian Advisory Board for 8 years. Helene has also held the position of Divisional Operations Officer for South Gippsland and Volunteer Peer Support to the State manager of Emergency Services. Her main interest is in Emergency Services and in 2013 was awarded a National Emergency Medal for her work during and after the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Helene is also one of only two Red Cross people to be a part of the Victorian Government’s Volunteer Consultative Forum that was established out of the Royal Commission into the 2009 Bushfires.

If you were to congratulate Helene for earning this award, she would probably tell you that she was just doing what had to be done, and that surely is the power of humanity.

'Outside our Window"

wri)en by grade 4

student Josh. Outside Our Window

Outside is blooming and the sun is powering down sunlight and all the grass is showing true colour, and the trees are breathing out oxygen and the flowers are getting nectar ready for the bees to drain and make honey. Ants are crawling everywhere, getting their leaves ready and getting the babies born. It is blooming out there. Maybe you will enjoy it if you join our school, BVPS, now.
