Meet Melissa and Rick Roden. Rick is part owner of Roden Echo Valley, LLC in West Bend, Wisconsin. Melissa is a Sales Administrator at Calf-Tel. Rick is one of Melissa’s customers. Although, it wasn’t always that way….
Rick is a 2nd generation Wisconsin dairyman. He and his family have been Calf-Tel customers almost from the beginning. And, when Calf-Tel talks to dairy producers, it’s important to have folks working for us who know a thing or two about raising calves, which is why we hired Melissa. She is the person on the other end of the phone when any of our customers call Calf-Tel headquarters. Every now and then we’ll hear her exclaim: “HOLY BUCKETS!” (We’re still trying to figure out exactly what that means.)
Not only does she know our product better than the engineers that have designed it—the sun rises and sets over a dairy farm where she lives and Calf-Tel product is put to use every day.
Upon one look and a firm handshake with Rick, it doesn’t take much to feel the sense of pride in knowing that raising calves into milk-producers is a family affair with the Roden’s.
Rick’s father, Bob, grew up on a farm and started his own in 1975. He and Rick are Co-owners of Roden Echo Valley, LLC and oversee all of the farm operations. Bob also sits on the board of the Ozaukee County Fair and Rick is a 4H mentor in the Ozaukee community. Mother,
Cindy, looks after all the calves from the moment they are born and Rick’s sisters Patti, Amy and Becky…well, let’s just say they do everything else and everything else is a BIG job.
Jacki, another one of Rick’s sisters, after completing college decided she would use the farms’ resources to inspire future generations of Wisconsin dairy farmers. Jacki runs Roden Barnyard Adventures, hands-on learning camps and tours for groups and schools.
Set in the countryside of the Town of Trenton, Wisconsin, Roden Echo Valley, LLC is a 1200 head dairy across three locations and 2,000 acres. They also grow cash crops: corn, wheat, soybeans and hay. All is used for feed. Manure solids are composted for bedding and the liquids are used to fertilize crops.
Rick and his entire family are hard-working, honest and direct—which is why their farm is a proving ground for Calf-Tel product. If something isn’t right, we’ll hear about it. If something can be made better, they’ll help us figure out how to do it.
Rick and his family are just one example of how our customers make our product better. More importantly, why Calf-Tel has been relied on for generations and will be for many in the future.
This catalog is a tribute to our customers and every-thing they do to put the product from their farms on tables around the world.

It seemed pretty simple. “Make it better.”
We did. We revolutionized the way calves can be raised healthy and
comfortably. Since 1981, the goal remains simple. “Keep improving.”
And, quite honestly, it is just that simple. Simple, because our method of improvement comes via the input of the folks that use our products the most. Nary a day goes by that we’re not having a one-on-one conversation with calf raisers throughout the world. We’re constantly experimenting with the question: “Wouldn’t it be great if...?”
The translation of “Moooo.”We strive to understand what the calf might ask for if
she could talk to us about our product. It’s not uncommon to see one of our product engineers crawling out of one of our hutch or pen systems. Many of our improvements or innovations have been made in an attempt to “be a calf.”
Making it better.Since 1981 it’s been our lifeblood. It’s what we practice
every day. We engineer, develop, produce, prototype, bend, break and build it again until we get it right. Then we do it again.

The Way We Make Our ProductsThere’s always more than one way to do something, but only one best way. We thermoform Calf-Tel hutches out of extruded sheets of polyethylene. This process results in a molecular bonding within the plastic that is far superior to any other form of manufacturing—providing unmatched strength and durability.
As Reliable As Your Best Milking CowThe structural integrity of our Calf-Tel hutches are proven to stand the test of time. It’s not unusual to see our hutches still in use after 25 years on the job. Calf-Tel’s high-molecular weight is combined with a UV-blocking pigment—preventing premature degradation of the plastic. One less thing to worry about.
We Care About ComfortHappy, healthy calves are a direct result of comfort and climate. The opaque material used on Calf-Tel hutches acts as a barrier to direct sunlight, producing shade and a resulting lower temperature. This material also reduces condensation, often found in translucent hutches, which can build up during dramatic shifts in weather—keeping calves dryer during cold, winter days.

CALF-TEL IS THE INDUSTRY’S NUMBER ONE CHOICE FOR CALF HOUSING
Whether you’re raising just
one calf or thousands of calves,
indoors or out, the Calf-Tel®
family of products offers calf
raisers around the world the
best and most cost effective
systems for raising healthy,
productive calves.
THE CALF-TEL ADVANTAGE
7
We Go with the FlowVentilation is critical in limiting respiratory illness and eliminating heat stress. The flow of air is strategically engineered into Calf-Tel hutches, and enhanced by an extra-large adjustable ventilation opening (largest in the industry) for maximum comfort and breathability. Our indoor pen systems feature the AirMax panel for improved air-flow in challenging conditions.
We Promote Biosecurity……because it’s worth promoting. You wouldn’t want to invite anything and everything into the place you live. Your calves don’t want that either. However, many materials on the market are extremely porous—like an open door with a dinner bell for bacteria, pathogens, manure acids and other undesirables. Calf-Tel’s smooth surfaces don’t have any pores, making them not only impervious to said undesirables, but super-easy to clean and maintain. When combined with proper management practices, calf raisers have found that our housing systems contribute to lower mortality, morbidity and overall treatment costs leading to enhanced calf growth.
Money TalksFor over 35 years, Calf-Tel has been producing products that are built to stand the test of time. Longer lasting product leads to lower lifetime costs. Combine this with the cost savings and benefits of superior calf health and you can see why approximately 2 million calves are raised in Calf-Tel housing systems worldwide each year.

Farm LayoutsSuccessful generational producers evolve their style of raising over time. As technology and innovations reveal themselves, producers will make adjustments, customize or advance the way in which they operate.
The ultimate goal is always profitability – achieved through a combination of value, volume and operational efficiency. That’s where we come in.
We developed our products to help producers improve their style of raising through better calf-health and operational efficiency through decreased labor costs. Calf-Tel takes a hard look at the Total Cost of Ownership over time or TOC. This, of course, is different for every producer.
The Style Guide offers a look at how our product can be configured based on various raising styles. The purpose of this section is to offer ideas that may lend themselves to your own operation.
Roden Echo Valley, LLCThe Roden family has a 3rd generation dairy operation based in West Bend, Wisconsin. They have been a test-bed for Calf-Tel for a number of years. Given the diverse and harsh seasonal climate in Wisconsin, they wanted to maximize the benefits of fresh air, sunshine and ventilation while protecting staff and animals from intense temperatures and harsh elements.
At the Roden’s farm, lean-to barns were constructed to provide shelter and line-style raising used for efficiency, while retractable screening provides solar insulation and fresh air. Rear ventilation tubes help with airflow and also provide a layer of insulation.
The Calf-Tel Pen System allows the Rodens to easily customize each lean-to as their herd expands or contracts.

Larson AcresThe Larsons constructed large open-air barns to maximize fresh air and ventilation while providing protection for farm staff and animals during the harsher Wisconsin seasons. Barns can be completely opened during milder seasons for maximum ventilation. During colder weather, or to protect from the elements, the structure can be closed while still maintaining ventilation through tubes that bring in air from the outside via fans.
For efficient feeding and care, the Larsons have their Calf-Tel pens set up with one aisle down the center of the population.
A-Tex DairyIn the Texas panhandle, farmers deal with multiple weather extremes and a large calf population. A-Tex Dairy chose the innovative Calf-Tel ECS because it offers a climate-controlled system for raising calves outside, year round, in addition to the superior bio-benefits and ease of cleaning compared to wood style hutches. The ECS is raised off the ground on a wooden base that allows for waste pass-through in addition to added ventilation from below.
Vir-Clar FarmsVir-Clar is a classic example of hutch-style calf raising. Site location and hutch positioning is key, along with proper bedding techniques and feeding, providing calves with all the fresh air and sunshine benefits of being raised outside while still providing shelter from the multi-faced Wisconsin seasons. Calf-Tel hutches provide shelter from harsh elements and cold temperatures in addition to shade from the sweltering heat. Hutches are easily moved and reconfigured to ensure a fresh start for new additions and a constantly changing population.

RECOMMENDED SITES
Four common ways the MultiMax is used:
Prepared Site: Place the MultiMax on a well-drained surface (gravel, crushed stone or sand). This will keep calves dry and healthy. Outside pen required.
Rotating Site: Place one MultiMax in a small pasture and move the unit and its pen periodically.
Large Common Pasture: Place multiple MultiMax’s in a large pasture with bigger groups. Position the units near each other, as the herd will not separate to housing in different locations.
Group/Robotic Feeding: When group feeding methods are being employed, the MultiMax provides an ideal group housing solution.

THE GROUP LOOPOnce calves reach a certain age they are ready to be
moved into group housing. However, the transition
isn’t always black and white. Recognizing this,
we worked with our customers to help them phase
their calves into a group with a solution that’s both
innovative and easy as one, two, three!
The Calf-Tel Group Loop quickly and easily turns two pens into one large grouping pen:
1. Remove the L-Rods and side panel between two pens2. Insert the Group Loop using the same L-Rods3. Make sure the cable is connected from the base of the pen fronts to the
base of the rear panels
Voila! Group housing in a snap.
The durable, galvanized steel-tubed arch, is customized to fit perfectly between the connection areas of the Calf-Tel pen system front and rear panels. Once inserted, this arch creates a solid single structure, preventing the panels from pushing out.
The steel cable easily connects to the bottom of the arch, completing the loop. Why is the cable necessary? Because sometimes young calves get frisky and like to play. This cable prevents the more ornery calves from kicking the panels outward. It also keeps the shape of the pen when bedding packs expand.
Customized fit between front panels and rear panels using L-Rod connector
Easy to assemble
Steel Floor Cable adds stability with a sturdy connection
