STAGE 5 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

What a year we have already in Stage 5! It just seems like yesterday that school started for 2017. Students in Years 9 and 10 have been working well in class and also participated in some significant school events. 1. Kanahooka High School 2017 Assessment Schedule and Procedures

These booklets were issued to both Years 9 and 10 last week. Please ask you child for it. It is an important document as it lists all of their assessment tasks and examinations for the year. It tells them when their assessment tasks are due for each of their subjects during the year. Students need to keep it in a safe place. If they lose it they can ask at the front office for another one.

Year 10 students this year will qualify to receive the second highest achievement of secondary education. It is called the Record of School Achievement (RoSA ) from the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). The Year 10 Assessment Schedule and Procedures Booklet tells the students what they need to do to be eligible for the RoSA. It has important information about the responsibilities Year 10 students must follow to qualify for a RoSA. The KHS After School Tutorial Centre is held every Tuesday and Wednesday in the Library from 2.30pm until 3.30pm. Students who need assistance with tasks or classwork are encouraged to attend. If students are having problems completing tasks they need to talk to their teacher well before the due date to receive assistance.

2. Kanahooka Athletics Carnival

It was great to see large numbers of Stage 5 students in attendance at the Athletics Carnival. The students who attended had a great time. It is these days which can create great memories and I would encourage those students who did not attend to turn up next year. One very pleasing aspect for me was the number of parents who came along to support their children.

3. Uniform It is pleasing to report that the majority of students from Stage 5 are wearing the correct KHS school uniform. Community members have commented how impressive the uniform is when worn by our students. It has been warm over Summer with students not having to wear warm clothing, however, I would ask you to begin preparing for the Winter months by purchasing the correct KHS school uniform jumper, jacket or dress pants. Before you know it, Autumn and Winter will be upon us and your child will need to wear these items to school. For more information about the KHS school uniform, please visit the KHS website.

Year 9 Elective Classes In my role as Stage 5 Deputy Principal I walk in and out of classrooms around the school. There is some impressive work being completed every day at KHS. This week I have opted to highlight the work being completed in some Year 9 elective classes.

STAGE 5 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONTINUED

Japanese I wish I could write something in Japanese. All the class definitely had a better grasp of the language than me. This was impressive as they only have been studying Japanese for a few weeks. The students in this class impressed me with their understanding and level of participation. Some comments from students included: Naomi G – “I love Japanese because I’m fascinated by Japan’s culture and beliefs. I love everything about the country and one day I will live there.” Miles W – “Japanese is a great subject because learning a new language is interesting and the lessons are fun.”

Classroom Mythbusters In this Science based elective the students are testing human reflexes. They are developing research tasks which are testing if reflexes can be improved over time with practice. One of the photos below shows the students testing reflexes with a ruler. Taimani K – “Classroom Mythbusting is rad because it is unlike other classes.” Chloe S – “Classroom Mythbusting is very interesting and fun. I enjoy doing pracs and other activities with my group.” Josh U – “Classroom Mythbusting is an amazing class. I enjoy learning new things.”

Industrial Technology Timber If you are as old as I am, we used to call this subject Woodwork. The Year 9 students are currently constructing jewellery boxes. Mr Poppett arrived at our school this year and has all the students working effectively. Mitchell Y – “I enjoy building things.” Matt D – “I like using woodwork tools to make projects.”

Photography When I walked into this class the students were engrossed in an activity in which they were using Photoshop. I have included photos from the class which were taken when they completed a treasure hunt activity by taking photos around the school. The photos reveal beautiful aspects of our school, which we do not always notice as we rush past them in a busy day.

Kayla M – “I love Photography, because it gives me a different perspective on learning. It is fun and enjoyable to take photos.” Shyanne O – “I love Photography because you get to learn new techniques in taking a photo. You then get to show your photos to family and friends.” P Kipp Deputy Principal Stage 5

Our goal is not to see any students go hungry, but we must also rely on student honesty to ensure we are reaching our most needy families. If families are experiencing ongoing financial difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact Jos in Kullillah and I will happily assist families gain the support they need. HSIE

The HSIE faculty have had a great start to the year. It has been so pleasing to see so many students engaged in lessons and various activities. There has been a recent change in our staffing, Mrs Mar has been seconded to Engadine HS and she is replaced by Mr Bird. It is a welcome return to Mr Bird who many might remember as a HSIE teacher of yester-year. It was great to talk to so many perspective parents at the Year 6 into Year 7 evening. A big thank you to the efforts of the staff in showcasing HSIE and Languages in such a positive way. Parents and perspective students were impressed by the efforts and vision we have for their children’s education. Currently we are in a process of swapping over syllabuses. This process allows staff the time to reflect on what we do to ensure that we are meeting the needs of our students. You will begin to see changes in the coming months as new syllabuses are introduced. As always, if you have any questions or comments then your child’s teacher is the first port of call. Can I pay special attention to Mrs Nyman’s Year 11 Ancient History class that spent a period being archaeologists. Mrs Nyman went to a great deal of time and effort to create for each student their own mini pit, complete with layers and objects to find as they dug further, even going back in time to find a dinosaur! Sam C was without doubt our most committed archaeologist, however, with enthusiasm saw him adopt a Schliemann-like approach to archaeology and his pit looked like a Trojan excavation.
