The bareessentialsReduction andsimplicityThe PROTON Spotlight range
appealed to the reductive in-
stincts of Nicholas Grimshaw &
Partners. The design team iden-
tified the essential elements of a
spot light, removing superfluous
detail to simplify the product
while optimising functionality
and light performance. Reflector
technology is the key stone to
Zumtobel Staff product and it
was by working very closely
with the engineering team that
Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners
was able to create a distinctive
spotlight range with minimal
parts. Close and confident colla-
boration ensured that the true
brief emerged and an innovative
product range was successfully
developed.

The PROTON spotlight design is based on
two system lines:
• PROTON with a 3-phase adapter for use
on Zumtobel Staff tracks
• PROTON TEC for connection to the
TECTON continuous-row lighting system
This gives PROTON a high level of flexibility,
because every zone of action in shopping
centres and retail outlets requires a specific
kind of lighting, matched to the products on
display.

Two design sizes are available each for both
PROTON (titanium and white) and PROTON
TEC (white), (top) for QT12 resp. QR-CBC
(Proton only) the small version, and (bottom)
for HIT and HST the large version.

If you require further informa-
tion on the TECTON conti-
nuous-row lighting system, we
have a wide range of material
available for you. Please con-
tact your local Zumtobel Staff
dealer or one of our local con-
sulting centres.

PROTON TEC can be positioned
flexibly at any time, and adapted to
the specific room situation.
Two flush-fitted rotary toggles –
large and easy-to-grip, yet in-
conspicuous – fix the spotlight
and afford easy installation as
well as trouble-free maintenance.
The spotlights can be fitted in
the trunking quickly and easily
without any tools. The CLIX
mechanism ensures precise,
reliable connection.
A particular advantage of PROTON TEC lies in the fact that this
new range of spotlights can be used in the future-orientated
TECTON continuous-row lighting system by Zumtobel Staff. The
spotlights are flexible and can be positioned quickly and easily in
any position. This complies with the many and varied requirements
in supermarkets, hypermarkets and retail outlets with areas with
differentiated lighting needs. In such situations, mixed lighting is
required frequently, in order to be able to cover everything from bril-
liant colour rendition to an inviting ambience.
The advantage of PROTON TEC is that it is fitted with the new ge-
neration of SDW-TG high-pressure sodium discharge lamps, thanks
to the use of electronic ballasts. This also enables the use of high-
output HIT and HST lamps as a mixed-lighting concept, in a har-
monious spotlight design.

ting section for the con-
nection of the PROTON
TEC Spotlights.
Material and surface finishOverall, PROTON impresses thanks to its
noticeably reduced design. The PROTON
design concept combines aesthetic and
functional aspects into measurable,
practical benefits. Apart from separation
of the heat-generating spotlight head and
the heat-sensitive ballast housing, there
are other details, such as vents in the head
of the spotlight, ensuring perfect thermal
circulation and therefore extending the
useful service life of the lampholder and
the lamp.
Optimised handlingWith PROTON, relamping pre-
sents no problems and is done
in practically no time. The parti-
cular advantage here is that the
reflector has a bayonet catch
and can be removed or fitted,
even if accessories such as
anti-glare blades or glass filters
have been installed. This avoids
dirtying the reflector surface,
with fingerprints for example.
Innovation in detailFunctionality and reliability
Lighting qualityPROTON is distinguished by its functionality
and ability to adapt to lighting tasks. The
application-orientated accessories can be
fitted without using any tools, and fulfil the
requirements of professional lighting con-
cepts.

Application recommendations:
P R O T O N A P P L I C AT I O N 9
Light has a crucial bearing on buying de-
cisions, above all in the food sector.
Freshness and quality must be clearly visi-
ble. The light colours must match the
colours of the foodstuffs on display to em-
phasise their qualities.
Depending on the particular product and
lighting task, appropriate accessories are
available for the PROTON range. Silver- or
gold-coloured reflectors, IR filters to prevent
too much heat affecting the products, and
correction filters to highlight specific food-
stuff colours and textures.
Efficient lightPractical range ofaccessories
Efficient photometric featuresBy using a gold-coloured reflector and an HST lamp, warm
tones in particular come into their own, for example in the case
of bakery or confectionery goods. These reflectors can be used
with both PROTON and PROTON TEC.
PROTON TEC with an electronic ballast can be fitted with the
new generation of small, high-output SDW-TG 100 W high-
pressure sodium discharge lamps.
