The aim of this detailed presentation

is to:• Reiterate the importance of not crossing

barriers or modifying collective protective equipment without authorization.

• Heighten awareness about the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) designated for the area and task.

• Encourage personnel to check that their PPE are in good condition.

• Make sure that any damaged collective equipment and PPE, or items that are not in good working order, are systematically flagged up.

1 injury, 2019During works of cutting through tubes in a shutdown boiler an operator removed his face shield to check the cut. The dust particles that had settled on the face shield fell into his left eye.

1 injury, 2019An operator changing a glass globe lamp shade on a lamp post cut his wrist.

1 injury, 2019When a technician was cutting a solar panel, some small fragments of the panel entered his eye.

RISKS AND CONSEQUENCES

Not using protective equipment increases our exposure to professional risks:

They are our final protection against risks.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT & PREVENTION

To prevent accidents it is important to use a preventive approach that relies on the following main principles:

7

P R E V E N T I V E A P P R O A C H

#Goldenrules – GR4 – Protective equipment – November 2020

THE CHOICE OF PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT IS A RESULT OF A RISK ANALYSIS AND ASSESSMENT. IT IS THE FINAL PROTECTIVE BARRIER.

Identify and assess risks

Tackle risks at source

Prioritizecollective protective measures

Use personal protective equipment in addition to collective protection when collective protection is not sufficient

DEFINIT IONS FROM CR-GR-HSE-406Collective Protective EquipmentCollective protective equipment is “a device, mechanism, apparatus or installation, which through its design (layout and composition) has the capacity to satisfactorily protect personnel against one or more professional risks and of limiting the consequences. This equipment is integrated into or added to the production means or workplace. Equipment ensures collective protection when it indiscriminately ensures the safety of personnel affected (direct risk) and that of other people nearby”.

In Golden Rule no.4, the term ‘safety barriers’ is used to designate collective protective equipment.

PPE - Personal Protective EquipmentPersonal protective equipment is “classified into three categories:• PPE designed to protect against risks that could cause superficial injuries.• PPE designed to protect against risks that could cause serious injuries.• PPE designed to protect against risks that could result in irreversible or fatal injuries“.

8#Goldenrules – GR4 – Protective equipment – November 2020

COLLECTIVE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT PROTECTS ALL PERSONNEL. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT IS COMPLEMENTARY AND FOR THE INDIVIDUAL.

To prevent accidents, it is forbidden to cross or reposition protective barriers. Collective protective equipment ensures our safety and that of our colleagues.Crossing or repositioning it means that you expose yourself and others to greater danger.

Authorization must be given to remove or reposition an item of collective protective equipment.

It is based on a risk assessment that specifies any mitigation measures that need to be implemented. The authorization is formally defined and issued by a competent person with the authority required to do so.

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU NOTICE AN ITEM OF COLLECTIVE EQUIPMENT IS DAMAGED

To prevent accidents, we must all be attentive to damaged or malfunctioning collective protective equipment.

To protect your colleagues on site:- Step in to stop the operation in progress.- Set up a physical barrier immediately.- Mark out the area.- Create a temporary sign.- Inform your colleagues.

TWO TYPES OF PPE

It is always worn on facilities, depending on the applicable rules. It is defined according to a risk assessment and each site can have different standard PPE.

S TA N D A R D P P E

It is worn to carry out specific tasks or in marked out areas. It is defined based on a risk assessment.

HOW TO CHECK AN ITEM OF PPE?

PPE is defined based on a risk assessment to ensure it is suited to the area and the task. This equipment is personal and is to be adapted to suit each person.

Items of PPE have a limited lifetime, and some are subject to periodic checks. To prevent accidents, it is mandatory to check that the PPE is in good condition before use.

BEST PRACTICES• Check that you are wearing the defined PPE. • Check that the PPE is adapted to each person (size, shape, etc.)• Check equipment wear and tear.• Check the validity date for PPE items that have one.• Introduce checklists for the points to be inspected.

WHEN SHOULD YOU WEAR A L IFE JACKET?

Wear a life jacket or personal floating device when required. For example:• Transfers between marine vessels or between vessels and

offshore facilities.• Evacuations from offshore sites or small boats.• Work above water where the risk of falling cannot be fully

eliminated.• When walking close to an unprotected water retention pond.

REMINDER• Life jackets are sized for the weight of the user.• For offshore sites, they must have a whistle and a water activated

light (GP-EP-LSO-209).
