But even today, because of the lower initial investment, � ame-retardant-treated (FRT) cotton garments are still widely used, despite their lower protective characteristics. Over the years, DuPont was instrumental in the development of a set of tests which objectively measure the protective performance against speci� c simulated thermal hazards:

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DUPONT™ NOMEX®

DuPont™ Nomex® is a meta-aramid � bre that derives its � ame resistant properties from its speci� c structure of aromatic rings and conjugated amide bonds. As its thermal behaviour is obtained by its molecular structure and not by applying a � ame retardant chemical substance to the fabric, yarn, � bre or polymer, DuPont™ Nomex® o� ers you permanent protection, which cannot be washed out or worn away.

Terminology Why Nomex®?

Nomex® is an inherently flame-resistant, high-temperature resistant meta-aramid fibre that doesn’t melt

and drip or support combustion in the air. A key factor in the protection provided by Nomex® is its ability

to carbonize and thicken when exposed to intense heat.

This typical reaction increases the protective barrier between the heat source and the wearer’s skin and

minimizes burn injury, almost comparable to the way a modern car protects its occupants with air-bags.

Nomex® derives its flame resistant properties from its unique structure of aromatic rings and conjugated

amide bonds. As this thermal behaviour is obtained by its molecular structure and not by applying a flame

retardant chemical substance to the fabric, yarn, fibre or polymer, Nomex® offers permanent protection,

which cannot be washed out or worn away.

The history of Nomex®Nomex® was invented by DuPont in 1967.

During the past 40 years, DuPont has continuously enhanced the Nomex® fibres.

• All Nomex® PPE solutions have been blended with the para-aramid fibre DuPont™ Kevlar®, also developed

by DuPont, resulting in a fibre which provides additional strength and structural integrity when exposed

to heat and flame. Pure meta-aramid solutions are not recommended for use in PPE applications.

• DuPont added electrostatic charge dissipative P-140 fibres to most Nomex® PPE offerings for assured

protection against electrostatic discharge hazards.

>> INHERENT PROTECTION IN EVERY FIBRE …

BY DESIGN, DUPONT™ NOMEX® OFFERS THE ULTIMATE PROTECTION. IT HAS HEAT AND FLAME RESISTANCE BUILT INTO ITS MOLECULAR STRUCTURE, WHICH IS LESS FLAMMABLE BY NATURE.

Hence, the protective characteristics are not an add-on but a basic property, una� ected by the age of the garment or by rough treatment or repeated laundering. In addition, exposure to � ames makes the aramid � bres swell and become thicker, forming a protective barrier on your skin. � is barrier stays supple until it cools, o� ering you vital extra seconds of protection to escape.

� e numerous testing methods that DuPont developed for detailed assessment of the characteristics of DuPont™ Nomex® and other protective materials all con� rm the superior properties of DuPont™ Nomex®:

FLAME-RETARDANT TREATED (FRT) FABRICS ARE NOT HEAT AND FLAME RESISTANT BY NATURE.

A chemical additive is needed in the � bre or fabric, to provide some level of � ame retarding. During a � re, chemically treated fabrics rely on a chemical reaction to extinguish the � ame. � is reaction is triggered by the heat of the � re and the exposure time.

� e � ame resistant properties of FR treated fabrics deteriorate during laundering when regular chlorine bleach is used or when hydrogen peroxide bleach is combined with ‘hard’ water. Exposure to oxidizing chemicals in the workplace has a similar e� ect.

Unfortunately, to the wearer of FRT garments, it’s impossible to tell whether the � ame-resistant properties are still uncompromised. Even lab testing is di� cult, because all � ame or arc tests destroy the garment.
