PLESSISLAER CAMPUS:The Plessislaer campus is situated in Imbali, about 6km from the city centre, It offers Human Resource Management and Public Management for students who have completed grade 12 . NCV Engineering and Related Design and Education and Development are offered to students who have not passed grade 12. This campus also has fully equipped mechanical workshops.

ACCOMMODATIONAccommodation facilities are available only at the Plessislaer campus, but they are available to students who are studying at the other campuses. Application for residence accommodation is made after the students have obtained proof of programme registration. Students studying at other campuses must make their own transport arrangements to get to these campuses.

FINANCIAL AIDUmgungundlovu TVET College offers students the opportunity to apply for NSFAS TVET Bursaries. NSFAS bursaries are offered by the Department of Higher Education. This is a non-repayable bursary offered to full-time students registered for the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) and the NATED programmes. In order to qualify for the funding, the students need to meet with all the requirements of NSFAS.

CLUBS AND SOCIETIESThere are several cultural and sporting clubs and societies on each campus. Students are encouraged to join as a member or to start up their own clubs and societies with the support of the student representative council (SRC).

LIBRARIESAll the campuses have library facilities. The students are ensured a comfortable stay at the library whether it’s for study purposes or merely to read the newspaper.

REGISTRATION PERIODSBusiness studies (semester course): January and JulyEngineering studies (trimester course): January, May and September.National Certificate Vocational (NCV) Year course: JanuaryThese are subject to change. Please consult any campus with regards to any pre-applications that may take place.

WITHDRAWAL FROM PROGRAMMESThis must be done in writing, within one week of the beginning of classes. Failing to do this, students will be liable for the full cost of tuition fees.

EXAMINATIONSOnly students who have registered for full-time and part-time programmes and who have complied with the requirements will be allowed to enter for examinations.

EXAMINATION ENROLMENTS It is the responsibility of the students to contact their specific campuses for the exact dates of examination enrolments as well as examination dates. Any queries related to exams must be directed to the examination officer of the campus.

Career Opportunities:The mechanical career opportunities are vast. It is therefore important to select the correct N1 to N3 subject and trade theory for your desired career. At the N4 to N6 levels the course is not trade specific and covers general subjects necessary for careers in Mechanical Engineering. Career Path for Engineering Students

1. Trade Assessment:The requirements for trade test assessments have changed significantly. Please enquire at midlands campus or the marketing department for the document outlining trade assessments.

2. Wireman’s Licence • Learners who have completed an electrical apprenticeship, qualified as an electrician and have seven (7) years post trade test practical experience can apply for a wireman’s licence through the Department of Labour, only after they have passed Installation Rules (Paper 1 & 2).• The examination for Installation Rules is conducted during April, August and November of each year.• Learners have to acquire the SANS PUBLICATION 10142 PART 1 (Latest Edition) to prepare for the examinations.• The examination comprises 2 three hour papers.• No course mark is needed for this examination. • The pass mark for papers 1 and 2 is 50%.• Both examination papers may be written during the same examination sitting.• Candidates need not pass both examinations during the same sitting, but the second paper must be passed within 12 months of the first, otherwise both examinations must be rewritten.• If a candidate obtains 75% of the full marks in any paper, then he/she will be permanently exempted from rewriting that paper.• 50% must be obtained to pass the instructional offering Installation Rules.• An appropriate statement of result will be issued for accreditation purposes.

3. Procedure for registering as an Electrical Contractor• Qualify as an electrician.• Pass Installation Rules.• Apply to the Department of Labour for a wireman’s licence.• Then apply to the Electrical Contracting Association for a contractor’s licence.

4. Engineering Certificate of CompetencyThe following certificates of competency are issued by the Department of Labour:• Certificate of competency as Electrical Engineer (Factories)• Certificate of competency as Mechanical Engineer (Factories)

4.1 Admission RequirementsCandidate wanting to be admitted to the qualifying examination have to be accepted by the Commission of the Examiners appointed by the Chief Inspector.

Conversion CourseTo enable a mechanical/electrical engineer to qualify for the alternate government certificate of competency examination the following has to be completed.SUBJECTS ELECTRICAL MECHANICALElectrotechnics N6Industrial Electronics N5, N6Strength of Materials N6Fluid Mechanics N5, N6

4.2 EXAMINATIONS: Written examinations for the 2 subjects:• Plant Engineering - Factories or Mines• Occupational Health and Safety Act

Examinations are conducted by the Department of Education in June and November. Candidates must obtain at least 50% of the full marks in each of the 2 subject mentioned above. Candidates need not pass both subjects at the same examination sitting, but success in the second subject must be obtained within 2 years of passing the first, otherwise both subjects must be re-written. However, if a candidate obtains 75% or more off the full marks in any subject, he/she will be permanently exempted from re-writing that subject.
