Ar.�Sk.�Nawaz�Ali�has�passed�his�B.�Arch�from�the�prestigious�Chandigarh�College�of�Architecture,�Chandigarh� in� the� year� 2009� with� a� first� class�degree.

After�working�for�a�year�in�Mumbai�as�an�Assistant�Architect� he� went� on� to� study� at� the� National�Institute�of�Fashion�Technology,�Mumbai�for�his�degree�in�Master�of�Design.�He�gained�his�Masters�degree� in� 2012�wherein�he� stood�first� and�was�awarded� a� gold� medal� for� his� academic�excellence.�

He� has� also� received� a� scholarship� for� student�exchange� programme� to� attend� School� of�Design,�University�of�Leeds,�UK� to�complete�his�Post� Graduate� Certificate� in� Design� with�distinction.�He�always�tries�to�keep�himself�well�informed�in�the� field� of� Architecture� and� architectural�education.� He� has� attended� a� program� on�Architectural � Education� held� at� Manipal�University,� Dubai� Campus,� Dubai.� Also,� he� is�keeping� himself� busy�with� different� researches.�His� areas� of� researches� are� related� to� colour� in�urban�fabric�and�inclusive�design.�

Hailing� from�a�place�where�architecture�was�an�alien�subject�as�there�was�no�institute�to�realize�the� creative� dreams� related� to� architecture.� He�went� to�Chandigarh� to� fulfil� his� craving� for� this�creative� branch.� And� while� doing� his� post�graduation� he� incurred� an� interest� in� teaching�and�came�back�to�Guwahati�as�he�felt�that�he�had�gathered� information� which� needs� to� be�disseminated� to� the� younger� generation.�Recently�he�has�earned�a�Postgraduate�Certificate�in�French.���Currently�he�is�a�research�scholar�at�IIT�Guwahati.��He�initially�joined�Guwahati�College�of�Architecture�and�Planning�as�Assistant�Professor�but�later�on�took�charge�as�Principal�in�Charge.

With�great�pride,�we�pronounce�that�Guwahati�College�of�Architecture� and� Planning� (GCAP)� has� completed� over� a�decade�of�its�existence�and�we�are�glad�to�announce�that�GCAP� has� produced� over� 250� architects� for� the� society.�Some�of�our�students�are�well�placed�all�over�the�country��and�abroad�while�some�have�started�their�own�firms�and�still�some�of�them�are�pursuing�higher�studies�in�various�parts�of�India�and�abroad.�

The� fully� intensive� curriculums� at� GCAP� includes� a� wide�array� of� theoretical� classroom� teaching,� practical� studios;�education� aided� by� the� latest� audio� visual� aids,� vivid�ou tdoo r � ca se � s tudy , � s tudy � tou r � a s s ignment s ,�documentation� tour� collaboration� with� various� reputed�architecture� institutes,� academic� tie� up� with� CEPT,�Ahmedabad� and� immense� zonal� representation� and�participation� for� all� academic� and� co-curricular� activities�conducted� by� National� Association� of� Students� of�Architecture�(NASA),�all�meticulously�planned�to�hone�out�the�core�competencies�in�each�pupil.�

Guest�lectures�by�eminent�personalities�from�industry�and�academia�are�often�organised�to�keep�the�student�informed�of�the�current�professional�practice.�GCAP�tries�to�be�unique�through� its� various� programmes� and� associations,� all� of�which�gives�strong�foundation�for�our�courses.�With�regular�academics� lots� of� other� activities� takes� place� during� the�whole�year.�Student's�participation�is�encouraged�for�their�wholesome�development.�

Since�2016,�we�have�started�international�trips�so�as�increase�sttheir� exposure.� Our� students� participated� in� 1 � Indo-

Malaysia� Sustainable� Architecture� workshop� held� in�University� of� Malaya,� Kuala� Lumpur.� Similar� educational�trips�are�proposed�in�future�also.�

Offering� undergraduate,� Post� graduate� degree� programs�across� three� discipline� groups,� the� college� provides� an�energetic�and�rich�site�to�study�the�field.�

At�GCAP,�there�is�a�constant�upgradation�of�the�knowledge�by�the�faculties�enabling�them�to�give�best�knowledge�to�the�students.�

It� gives� me� great� pride� and� satisfaction� to� write� about�Guwahati�College�of�Architecture�and�Planning,�promoted�by�Dona�Foundation.�The�institution�is�passing�through�a�tremendously� changing� process� and� our� younger�generation�of�Architects,�Planners�and�Designers�must�be�trained� accordingly� to� address� the� challenges� effectively,�timely�and�meaningfully.

While�Education,�Training�and�Research�in�Architecture�are�going�through�a�phase�of�total�metamorphism�in�the�North-Eastern� Region,� recognizing� and� managing� shifting�paradigms,� with� the� help� of� the� enormous� leaps� of�technology,� is� the�need�of� the�hour.� Intense�competition�and� increasing� end-use� assertiveness� force� Architects� to�drastically�cut�down�their�response�time.

Architect� and� Town� planner� Shriprakash� Sandilya,�completed�his�graduation�(B.�Arch�Degree)�from�M.S�University� in� the� year� 1976� under� the� Assam�Government� Scholarship.� He� obtained� his� Master�Degree�in�Town�planning�(Housing)�in�the�year�1988.�He� is�a� life�member�of�the� Indian� Institute�of�Town�Planner,�New�Delhi�and�a� fellow�member�of� Indian�Institute�of�Architect,�Mumbai.�

He�started�his�professional�career�at�Guwahati�from�1981� and� currently� practicing� in� Architecture� and�planning.� He� has� been� an� active� member� of� the�housing�management,� low� cost� infrastructure� and�computer�application�under�the�Human�Settlement�Management� Institute,� New�Delhi� (HSMI)� between�1982�to�1990.�

His� firm� has� been� involved� in� various� Design�competitions� and�won� the� competition� for� Assam�State� Housing� Board,� Numaligarh� Refinery� Ltd� &�Power�Grid�Corporation�of� India.�His�firm�has�been�involved� in�designing� township�projects� for�Power�Grid�Corporation�and�the�Guwahati�Refinery.�His�firm�has�also�Design� Industrial� estates�EPIP�and�Growth�Centre� for� the� Assam� Industrial� Development�Corporation�and�the�Tripura�Industrial�Development�Corporation.�His�work�portfolio�includes�Architecture,�Town� planning,� Interiors� works� including� banks,�commercial,� industrial,� institutional� building� and�residential�complexes.

He� has� presented� various� papers� in� seminars� and�conferences.�He�has�presented�many�research�papers�and�some�of�them�have�been�published.�

Recently�he�was�appointed�as�a�coordinator�and�jury�member� for� the� 27th� J.K� award� function� held� at�Udaipur� and� Ahmedabad.� He� is� also� one� of� the�founder�members� of� the� Association� of� Architects�Assam�(AAA)�and�its�Ex-General�Secretary�in�the�year�1993.�The�same�year�he�was�also�the�Joint�secretary�of�IIA� Assam� Centre� and� helped� to� generate� larger�membership�so�that�Architects�of�this�region�could�participate�at�National�level.�

thDona� Foundation� Trust� was� established� on� 13 �September,� 2005� by� Architect� Shri.� Abani� Das� &�Educationist��Smt.�Daksha�Das.���

Since�there�was�no�architecture�college�in�the�North�East�states�and�students�had�to�travel�far�and�wide�in�order�to�fulfill�their�dream�of�becoming�an�architect,�Dona�Foundation�took�it�upon�themselves�to�start�a�college�of�Architecture.�

Ar.�Abani�Das�has�made�Assam�proud�by�naming�the�college� 'Guwahati� College� of� Architecture� and�Planning'� (GCAP).� It� is� therefore� dedicated� to� the�states� of� North� East� in� general� and� particularly� to�Assam.�

Guwahati���College���of���Architecture���and���PlanningAffiliated�to�Assam�Science�&�Technology�University,�[Approved� by� Council� of� Architecture,� New� Delhi,�Higher� Technical� Education� Govt.� of� Assam� and�affiliated� to�Gauhati�University� (since�2006-13)]� and�Approved�by�Institute�of�Town�Planners,�India.�GCAP�is�the�first�Institute�of�Architecture�in�the�North�Eastern�Regions�of�India.�(�NOTE� �:� �Affiliation�of�all�technical�colleges� under� Gauhati� University� have� now� been�transferred� to� Assam� Science� and� Technology�University,� Guwahati� from� the�Academic� Year� 2014�onwards.�)

The� college,� promoted� by� Dona� Foundation� was�inaugurated� by� Shri.� Tarun� Gogoi,� Former� Chief�

thMinister�of�Assam�on�26 �January,�2006.�The�College�offers�a�5�year�Bachelor�Degree�in�Architecture�and�2�year�Master� Degree� in� Planning� (Urban� &� Regional�

Planning).� The� idea� and� perspective� of� Dona�Foundation,�has�successfully�provided�all�the�relevant�and�modern�facilities�to�the�students.

Career�making�in�Architecture�and�Planning�has�been�made�possible�by�GCAP�by�providing�the�necessary�platform�to�nourish�the�upcoming�talent�in�the�right�proportion�and�manner.

The�college�has�evolved�over�the�years�and�all�batches�of�students�have�passed�out�with�a�100%�placement�track�record.�Eminent�personalities�are�invited�from�all�over�India�as�visiting�faculty�and�Guest�Lecturers�from�time�to�time.�Every�month�visiting��faculties�from�Sir.�J.�J.� College� of� Architecture,� Mumbai� and� other�prominent�Institutes�visit�GCAP�every�month�to�guide��and�nurture�the�students�in�their�studies�and�final�year�thesis.�GCAP�has� collaborated�with� various� reputed�architecture� institutes� for� combined� study� tour� to�various�Heritage�sites.��

International� study� trips� are� also� conducted� every�year.�These�Study�trips�are�later�showcased�in�the�form�of�Exhibition�and�documentation�is�published�every�year.

An� MOU� has� been� signed� with� CEPT� University,�Ahmedabad�for�educational�programmes.�

Brief on

Shri.� Sarbeswar� Das� was� born� in� Bahari� Satra,�main� Satra�of� Shree�Shree�Harideb,�one�of� the�four� vaishnanite� Gurus� of� Assam,� and� very�interestingly� took� birth� on� the� Janma-Tithi� of�Mahapurush� �Shree�Shree�Harideb,� in� the�year�1918.

thIn�the�19 �Century�the�composite�state�of�Assam�till�independence�did�not�have�any�technical�or�medical�college�not�to�speak�of�university.�Shri.�Sarbeswar�Das�overcame�a� lot�of�difficulties� to�become� a� civil� engineer� from� a� reputed� and�renowned�institute�at�Lucknow.�

As�a�true�son�of�the�soil�he�came�back�to�Assam�and� joined�Assam,�PWD�from�where�he�retired�after�attaining�superannuation�in�the�year�1976.��

This�Knowledge�Campus�has�been�dedicated�in�the�name�of�this�illustrious�son�of�Assam�with�the�hope�that�quality�education�will�be�provided�to�the� students�who�will� serve� the� nation�with� a�sense�of�integrity�and�devotion.

ʻSarbeswar� Das� Knowledge� Campus'� is� named�after� the� Managing� Trustee's� father� Architect�Abani� Das.� This� knowledge� Campus� will�encompass�multi�disciplinary�activities�to�enrich�learning�seamlessly�for�any�age�group.��

Located�in�the�close�vicinity�of�Lokpriya�Gopinath�Bordoloi�International�Airport�at�Azara,�Guwahati�the� ten� acre� campus� is� surrounded� by� lush�greenery� amidst� beautiful� sceneries,� the� best�Mother�Nature�could�provide.�

The�total�construction�area�of�the�first�phase�of�Guwahati�College�of�Architecture�and�Planning�is�around� 1,00,000� sq.� ft.� The� Main� architecture�building� is� of� about� 52,000� sq.� ft.� area.�On� the�ground� floor� there� is� an� Entrance� lobby,� all�a dm in i s t r a t i v e � d epa r tmen t s , � f a c u l t y�departments,�Library,�Seminar�Hall,�etc.� �On�the�first�floor�we�have�studios,�classrooms�and�on�the�

Scope for students studying Master of Planning (Urban & Regional Planning)

India�Needs�3�Lakh�Town�Planners�by�2031�:�UNESCO�Report

BENGALURU:�India�is�on�a�path�to�rapid�urbanization,�but�the�country�lacks�adequate�number�of�urban�planners.�According� to� the�Unesco�Global� Education�Monitoring� report� 2019� that�was� released�on�Tuesday,�India�requires�3�lakh�urban�town�and�country�planners�by�2031�to�rejuvenate�and�develop�its�cities�into�smart�ones.�However,�the�country�has�only�one�urban�planner�per�4�lakh�people.

In�India,�21�universities�offer�postgraduate�town�planning�programmes�and�only�five�offer�them�at�the�undergraduate�level.�As�per�the�2011�census,�the�country�had�only�4,500�qualified�town�and�country�planners,�stated�the�report.�And�according�to�the�report�and�experts,�when�it�comes�to�urban�planning�education,�nothing�much�has�changed.

Prof�N�Sridharan,�director,�School�of�Planning�and�Architecture,�Bhopal�said:�“The�reason�why�urban�planning�education�is�lagging�is�due�to�lack�of�awareness�about�availability�of�any�such�course�at�the�school� and� college� level.� Students� are�mostly� told� about�mainstream� professions.� Urban� planning�education�is�different�from�architecture�studies�and�has�a�lot�more�social,�environmental�and�technical�exposure.”

A�review�of�institutions�accredited�by�Indiaʼs�Institute�of�Town�Planners�showed�many�planning�students�lacked�exposure�to�town�and�city�problems.�Further,�they�were�unfamiliar�with�the�functioning�of�urban�development�institutions�and�not�up�to�date�about�urban�development�programmes.

But�Professor�Kala�Seetharam�Sridhar,�head�of�department,�centre�for�research�in�urban�affairs,�Institute�for�Social�and�Economic�Change,�Bengaluru,�felt�students�are�aware�of�present�problems�of�urban�and�rural�India.�But�the�problem�is�at�the�recruitment�level.�Civic�bodies,�which�are�the�biggest�recruiters�of�urban�town�and�country�planners,�do�not�have�enough�freedom.�They�have�to�depend�on�the�urban�development�department�for�these�requirements.�If�they�are�financially�strong�enough�and�can�recruit�town�planners�directly,�the�shortage�can�be�addressed.”

The�students�are�expected�to�make�extensive�use�of� Library� to� gain� knowledge� and� for� updated�information.�Internet�facility�is�also�available�in�the�library.

The�access� to�Library� internet�station�shall�be�by�fixing�of�time�slot�with�prior�request�to�the�library�staff.

Students�shall�handle�the�books�with�utmost�care,�not�to�spoil/�damage�it.�Students�shall�not�write�or�make�any�marks�inside/outside�the�book.

In�case�of�damage�to�the�books�or�internet�media,�students� will� be� levied� with� fine� as� deemed�appropriate�by�the�college�Authority;�to�cover�the�damage.

Deliberate�attempt�to�damage�the�Library�material�shall�lead�to�disciplinary�action.

Students�shall�deposit�at�the�library�counter�their�Identity� card,� to� access� the� library� references.�Identity� card� should� be� collected� while� retiring�from�library.� Identity�card�will�not�be�returned�to�the� student� if� act� of� in-disciplined� behavior� or�damage�to�books�is�noticed

Issue�of�books�for�personal�study�shall�be�strictly�on�the�basis�of�library�card,�issued�to�a�student.�

Delay�in�returning�the�book�may�lead�to�invalidity�of�card�and�shall�loose�library�facility.

Urban�and�regional�planners�prepare�plans�and�policies�at�a�range�of�levels�including�national,�state,�regional,�local,�precinct�and�site.�They�are�also�involved�in�the�private�sector,�working�for�property�developers�and�real�estate�entrepreneurs�for�big�scale�real�estate�and�township�projects.

In� accordance� with� the� University� norms� a�student�must�maintain�minimum�attendance�of� 75%� in� all� the� subjects� of� study� of� every�semester.

In� case� of� deficiency� in� attendance,� the�student�shall�not�be�permitted�to�appear�for�examination.�

Every�student�must�maintain�strict�discipline�in� the� college� premises� or� is� liable� for�disciplinary�action,�to�the�extent�of�rustication�from�the�college.

A� student� must� be� punctual� in� his/her�submission�of� assignments� in� every� subject;�failure�to�do�so�shall�result�in�non-eligibility�for�the�university� examination� in� the� respective�subject.

A� student� must� deposit� his/her� fees� of� the�semester;� within� the� specified� period.� On�expiry�of�the�period;�a�fine�of�Rs.50/-�per�day,�up�to�the�day�of�payment�of�fees�will�be�levied.

A�student�must�carry�with�him/her�the�college�Identity�card�and�should�be�produced�as�and�when� demanded� by� the� college/college�concerned� authorities.� Non� possession� of�Identity�card�shall�be�deemed�as�indiscipline.

The�students�shall�be�very�careful�not�to�spoil�/damage� any� part� of� College� premises,�furniture�and�equipment's.

The� student� must� be� careful� of� his/her�behavior�with�other�students/teaching�staff�/�office� staff� and� in� the� society� to� set� up� an�example�of�excellence�in�Profession.

The� students� should� also�participate�whole�heartedly� in� the� activities,� co-curricular� and�extracurricular�activities� including�tours�and�site� visits,� to� earn� better� credits� during� the�term.

The�students�should�be�punctual�and�adhere�to�the�various�time�schedules.�

Smoking� /� spitting� /� consumption� of�contraband�drugs�/�alcoholic�drinks�/tobacco�are�strictly�prohibited�in�college�premises�and�during�college�activities.�Students�under�the�influence�of�these�shall�be�rusticated�from�the�college.

Guwahati�College�of�Architecture�and�Planning� �has�given�me�the�opportunity� to� learn�beyond�the� four�walls�of�the�classroom.�Right�from�the�very�beginning�our� professors� took� great� care� in� teaching� us� each�subject�thoroughly.�They�were�more�like�our�friends�than�our�teachers.�

We�were� not� just� subjected� to� learn� from� the� text�books� but� were� given� fair� opportunity� to� explore�places�and�learn�from�our�own�experiences.�We�went�to�Tezpur�and�Allahabad�for�our�documentation�trip�and� we� got� to� learn� so� much� about� vernacular�architecture.� The� local� people� of� Allahabad�enlightened� us� regarding� the� famous� Kumbh�Mela�and�we�were�fortunate�enough�to�be�able�to�visit�the�Triveni�Sangam.�

The�Delhi�and�Chandigarh�trip�was�another�trip�that�we�cherish�very�much.�We�were�greatly��mesmerized�by� the� beauty� of� Mughal� Architecture� of� the�Humayun's�tomb.�We�even�visited�Pragati�Maidan�and�Indian�Habitat�centre.�We�were�also�taken�to�see�the�city�planning�of�Chandigarh,�the�Rock�garden�and�the�Secretariat.�

We�went�to�Gujarat�to�learn�about�its�rich�culture�and�also�visited�the�world�heritage�site�of�Champaner�and�Rani� ki� Vav.� Not� just� that,� to� keep� the� students�enthusiastic� throughout� the� semester,� our� college�conducts� various�guest� lectures� and� inter� semester�workshops.�We� even� celebrated�World� architecture�day� with� prominent� architects� from� Assam.� Our�college� believes� in� all� round� development� of� each�student.

rdIn�3 �semester,�we�were�taken�by�surprise�when�the�college�planned�an�international�trip�for�us�to�Bhutan.�We�got� to� learn� so�much�about� the�architecture�of��Bhutan�and�the�trek�to�the�Tiger's�nest�was�a�life�time�experience.�

To� broaden� our� knowledge,� we� have� always� been�encouraged� to� participate� in� Zonal�Nasa� as�well� as�Annual�NASA�apart�from�various�other�national�level�competitions.�Guwahati�College�of�Architecture�and�Planning�has�helped�each�of�us�to�live�our�dream�and�has�taught�us�to�believe�in�our�self.

Ragging�includes�the�following�:

Any�conduct�whether�by�words�spoken�or�written�or�by�an�act�which�has�the�effect�of�harassing,�teasing,�treating�or�handling�with�rudeness�any�other�student,�indulging�in�rowdy�or�undisciplined�activities�which�causes�or� is� likely� to� cause�annoyance,�hardship�or�psychological�harm�or�to�raise�fear�or�apprehension�thereof�in�a�fresher�or�a�junior�student�or�asking�the�students�to�do�any�act�or�perform�something�which�such� student� will� not� in� the� ordinary� course� and�which�has�the�effect�of�causing�or�generating�a�sense�of�shame�or�embarrassment�so�as�to�adversely�affect�the� physique� or� psyche� of� a� fresher� or� a� junior�student.

Punishable� ingredients� of� Ragging� including� the�following�or�any�other�act�which�is�not�included�here�but�may�be�considered�an�act�amounting�to�ragging�by�the�competent�authorities:

Attempts� to� commit� any� or� all� of� the� above�mentioned�offences�against�the�victim(s)

Physical�or�psychological�humiliation.

All�other�offences�following�from�the�definition�of�“Ragging”.

One�indulging�in�ragging�is�likely�to�be�punished�appropriately�which�punishment�may� include�expulsion�from�the�institution,�suspension�from�the�institution�or�class�for�a�limited�period�or�fine�with�a�public�apology.�The�punishment�may�also�take�the�shape�of:

(I)�Withholding�scholarships�or�other�benefits,

(ii)�Debarring�from�representation�in�events,

(iii)�Withholding�results,�and

Rules�of�The�HostelA� hostel� accommodation� is� provided� to� a�student�on�request�and�not�as�his/her�right.�

A�student�must�keep�and�be�exemplary�in�the�discipline;�cleanliness�and�sound�habits.�

Outsiders/guests�are�not�permitted�to�enter�the� rooms,�without�permission�of�Warden�/�Caretaker.�

Consumption� of� contraband� drugs/alcohol�and� smoking� is� prohibited� in� hostel� and�hostel�activities.�Students�found�in�alcoholic�condition�shall�be�rusticated�from�the�hostel.�

A� student� shall� not� cause� any� damage� to�hostel� property/furniture/equipments,� etc.�such�damages�shall�have�to�be�compensated�by�the�student�on�actual�cost�basis�in�addition�to� penal� action� by� the� hostel� and� college�

authorities.�

A�student,�seeking�hostel�accommodation,�shall�deposit�his/her�hostel�fees� in�total,�to�confirm�admission�to�hostel�for�the�term.�

Student�leaving�the�hostel�in�midway�of�the�term,�is�not�entitled�for�refund�of�hostel�fees.�

The� hostel� inmates� shall� be� careful� not� to�cause� any� disturbances/nuisance� to� the�neighbor� and� should� set� an� example� for�community�living.�

Hostel�caution�money�shall�be�refunded�to�the� student,� only� at� the� end� of� his� term,�when� he/she� finally� vacates� the� hostel.�Damages� if� any,� shall� be� recovered� from�caution�money�deposit.�

My�four�and�a�half�years�of�college�life�in�GCAP�has�been�a�journey�full�of�new�experiences�and�with�each�chapter� learning� something� more� about� the� field,�people,�and�life�as�a�whole.�

I� will� always� cherish� the� course� of� time� spent� in�college�till�the�end�of�days.�From�learning�how�to�hold�a� t-scale� and� setting� up� set� squares� to� drafting�flawlessly� in� AutoCAD,� the� college� and� every�individual�whether�it�be�the�faculties,�the�seniors,�the�batchmates� or� the� juniors� has� had� a� memorable�impact� on� my� learning� and� adaptability� of� the�phenomenon's.
