Our enrichment programme, which we expect all students to commit to, is JCC Extra. We expect all of you to participate in at least 35 hours a year of ‘JCC Extra’ as part of your study here. You will get an opportunity at the start of each academic year, and again in January, to choose an activity or activities to help you:
Develop new skills
Stretch and challenge you academically
Support your studies and improve your grades
Build up an effective CV
Enhance your UCAS personal statement
Spark a new interest

COURSES EXPLAINEDAS & A-LEVELSGCE A-level courses are mainly assessed by examination and often have a coursework component which usually (but not always) counts towards the final grade. You will study four subjects in your first year.
In your second year you will continue with three of these subjects and achieve three full A-levels. Some A-levels changed in September 2015 and have become two-year courses, with AS-levels acting as stand-alone separate qualifications.
BTEC LEVEL 3 CERTIFICATE (AS-LEVEL EQUIVALENT)BTEC Level 3 Certificates are similar to traditional A-levels and are equivalent qualifications. They are made up of two parts: the certificate AS level which you do in the first year, and the diploma A-level which you do in the second year. All BTEC Level 3 Certificates can be combined with AS/A-level choices.
LEVEL 3 BTEC EXTENDED NATIONAL DIPLOMASThese are two-year courses which give students the qualification they need to go on to university or find employment. They are practically based, involving assignments and each course is equivalent to three A-levels; a much better choice if you prefer assignments to examinations. We offer Extended National Diploma courses in Art and Design, Business, Health & Social Care, Children’s Play, Learning & Development, Information Technology, Science, Sport, Media and Performance Studies.
GCSEsThese are one-year courses and the full list is given on page 19. You would normally study four or five GCSEs, which may be resits or subjects you have not studied before.
22
LEVEL 2 BTEC EXTENDED CERTIFICATESThese are one-year courses and will be a good choice if you have some idea of what career you would like but would prefer to gain experience in an area before making any firm decisions. You will carry out assignments which are continuously assessed and there are tests at the end of some units of work. The work involves research and investigation. Your ability to organise yourself and work as part of a team will be developed on this course. This is a better choice than GCSEs if you prefer continuous assessment to examinations. A good result allows you to progress to a BTEC Extended National Diploma.
INTENSIVE ENGLISHThe College is proud of its additional programmes, which have enabled hundreds of students from all over the world to go on to university or employment. If English is a new language for you, we offer a wide range of English courses from beginners’ level to university entrance.
Your programme may also include other courses to give you a taste or introduction to these subjects - this will depend on your individual needs. We will use diagnostic tests to assess your level of English before we advise you of the course that’s most appropriate for you.
Our highly qualified teachers have the expertise and experience to help you to fulfil your potential.
23
NEXT STEPS

OUR ENTRY CRITERIA FOR BTEC LEVEL 3 ARE:5 x Grade 4s, including a Grade 4 or above, in GCSE English Language. GCSE Maths must be at grade 3 or above. A BTEC Level 2 that is graded ‘Merit’ or above will count as one Grade 4 equivalent in up to two instances.

HOW TO APPLY Our main criterion for selecting students is the reference written by your school or college. Unfortunately, we cannot take all students who apply to the College.
OPEN DAY & USEFUL INFORMATIONIf it is not convenient to come to our Open Day we are happy to answer any questions and offer advice at any time. Please telephone the College or visit the website. You can get more detailed information about each of our courses by visiting our website.
APPLYINGPlease apply using our online form which can be found on our website. Do not worry if you are unsure about which courses you would like to take. Select the courses that you are most interested in. You will not need to make any firm decisions about courses until enrolment. The courses that you select are just a starting point for discussion at your interview.
THREE STAGES OF GUIDANCE There are three main stages of guidance at the College to help you decide on your programme of study:
1 Interview
2 New Students’ Day
3 Enrolment
26
YOUR INTERVIEWThis is an opportunity for us to discuss all of the options open to you and for you to see the College. The interview is about discussing your ambitions and intentions, and supporting you to make the right decisions about courses and progression.
NEW STUDENTS’ DAYAll students who have achieved a place at the College will receive a letter telling them about their induction, which is held in the first week of July. Please keep the appropriate date clear in your diary, as we cannot guarantee your choice of courses if you do not attend.
ENROLMENTEnrolment is a time to discuss, in the light of your examination results, the choice of courses you made on your application. You may request a change of course if places are available.
FINANCIAL SUPPORTThe College has funds to help students who are experiencing financial hardship. You may apply for financial help once you are a member of the College, and your application will be given careful consideration.
WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING A PLACE AT JCC? Applications for places have risen every year which means that every year competition is very high. We interview everyone who has a good school reference, good attendance and good punctuality, so long as places are still available.
Your chance of getting accepted therefore depends very much on your school record for attendance, punctuality and attitude to study. We strongly advise you to apply early.
FARIAH KHALIDFariah Khalid is now reading Medicine at University of Leicester after achieving AAB in her results last year. When asked about her experience of JCC she explained “JCC was challenging but fun. These two years equipped me with the skills I need for university by building my own sense of independence.”
27
HIGHER EDUCATION & CAREERSAt Joseph Chamberlain College, we are committed to preparing you for life after you leave us. Throughout your time here, you will be taught employability skills through your tutorial programme and individual guidance interviews.
Our Careers Co-ordinator liaises with your Progress Tutor to monitor and record your progression throughout the year. Together, they will show you the potential progression routes available. You will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of Higher Education & Careers events, such as the Careers Fair, university talks and visits, apprenticeship talks and a work experience placement. Throughout the academic year, you may access drop-in sessions and one-to-one career guidance.
During these career guidance interviews, we will look at your academic progress and your career goals and decide on a path. After results day in August, we have ten days of specific careers support and advice for all students.
In December 2015, we were one of four educational institutions to receive a Gold Standard Careers Accreditation. The Quality Award in Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) from careers service ‘Prospects’ is designed to accredit good practice and encourage development in schools, academies, colleges, special schools and smaller units.
Quality awards lead to better careers and guidance programmes, increase senior managers’ and governors’ involvement and demonstrate to outside organisations, including Ofsted, that schools provide high quality CEIAG. We are the only sixth form college in the city to have achieved gold standard – the highest level of accreditation.
We work in partnership with Aston Medical School to give students with an interest in a career in healthcare the opportunity to join the Sir Doug Ellis Pathway to Healthcare Programme. This programme gives selected students the opportunity to participate in a range of activities including:
A two-week work placement within the local NHS
Online mentoring from an Honorary Clinical Fellow scheme linked with The Medical School
The opportunity to shadow current students from the School of Life and Health Sciences
Advice on obtaining work experience in the healthcare professions
Participation in a summer essay project
Participation in a summer academic enrichment programme
Easter revision classes on campus in Year 13
With the University of Birmingham, we are involved in the Access to Birmingham (A2B) scheme, which is designed to help students from families and communities in the West Midlands, who have little or no experience of Higher Education, find out about what studying at university involves.
